Head to head

Templates and assets Winner: Canva

Canva's library is far larger. Pro includes 3.6M+ templates and 141M+ premium photos, videos, graphics and audio, and even the free plan has 1.6M+ templates. Adobe Express Premium has 519,000+ premium templates and a strong asset library of 200M+ Adobe Stock items, plus the full Adobe Fonts collection of 30,000+ fonts. So Express wins on stock and fonts, but Canva gives you many more starting points for posts, flyers and decks. The downside of Canva's popularity is that its templates can look familiar unless you change them. Our ranking scores Canva 9.5 and Express 8.8 on templates and brand tools.

AI design tools Winner: Canva

Both generate editable designs from a prompt, but Canva goes further. Canva AI builds a draft design you can change word by word, Magic Layers splits a flat image into separate editable parts, and Magic Studio adds tools such as Magic Edit, Magic Expand and Magic Grab. Adobe Express offers Generate Template, Generate Image, generative fill for backgrounds, text effects and AI video, all powered by Adobe Firefly. Both limit AI use: Canva Pro allows up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra AI uses a month, and Express Premium gives 250 generative credits. Our ranking scores Canva 8.5 and Express 8.3 on design quality.

Editing and everyday workflow Winner: Canva

Canva is one editor for almost everything: social posts, presentations, docs, sheets, whiteboards and websites, with apps for web, iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. Magic Resize turns one design into many formats, and Pro includes 5 brand kits and social scheduling. Adobe Express covers the same core jobs on web, iOS and Android, adds PDF quick actions and schedules posts to 3 accounts per network on Premium, and includes one-click resize and brand kits. It is just as easy to learn, but Canva's wider suite means fewer apps to juggle. Our ranking scores Canva 9 and Express 8.5 on editing and control.

AI safety and commercial use Winner: Adobe Express

Adobe has the clearer position. It says its Firefly models are trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, and on public-domain material, that they are designed to be commercially safe, and that it has never trained Firefly on customer content. Adobe also helped found the Content Authenticity Initiative, which labels how content was made. Canva's approach centres on paying contributors whose content trains its AI, through a US$200 million fund announced in 2023. Both offer legal cover for AI output only at enterprise level: Canva Shield needs 100+ seats. Our ranking scores Express 9.3 and Canva 8 here.

Price Winner: Adobe Express

Adobe Express costs less. Premium is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US, against US$18 a month or US$144 a year for Canva Pro, so Express saves about US$44 a year on yearly billing. Firefly Pro at $19.99 a month also includes Express Premium, which suits people who want more AI image and video credits. Canva gives more for its higher price, with about seven times the templates and the wider Visual Suite, which is why our ranking still scores Canva's overall value slightly higher (9 against 8.5). On the sticker price alone, Express is the cheaper choice.

Adobe apps and pro files Winner: Adobe Express

If you or your designers already use Creative Cloud, Express fits in naturally. It works with Photoshop and Illustrator files, pulls in Adobe Stock and Adobe Fonts, and links to Acrobat for PDF tasks, so a designer can hand off assets that a marketer then adapts in Express. Canva's answer is Affinity, the professional design app it owns and made free in October 2025, but moving work between Affinity and Canva is a newer path with fewer shared habits in design teams. For a business built around Adobe files, Express saves time; for everyone else this round matters little.

Free plan Tie

Each free plan is strong in a different way. Canva Free has 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ stock items, 5GB of storage and up to 20 Premium AI uses a month, but Background Remover and Magic Resize need Pro. Adobe Express Free has fewer templates (100,000+) and 1M+ stock items, but includes background removal, 4,000+ Adobe Fonts, scheduling to one account per social network and 10 PDF quick actions a month, with a daily AI limit that Adobe does not publish. Choose Canva Free for choice of layouts and Express Free for handy photo and social tools.

Which should you choose?

Choose Canva if…

  • You want the largest template library for posts, flyers and presentations
  • You want AI that returns designs you can edit piece by piece
  • You also make docs, whiteboards or simple websites and want one app
  • You work on Windows or Mac and want a desktop app
  • Your team needs up to 100 brand kits with approvals (Business)

Choose Adobe Express if…

  • You want the cheaper paid plan ($9.99 a month in the US)
  • Your company is cautious about the training data behind AI images
  • You already use Photoshop, Illustrator or Adobe Stock
  • You want background removal and social scheduling on a free plan
Our verdict

Canva is the better all-round design tool; Adobe Express is the smarter pick for Adobe users and copyright-cautious businesses.

  • Canva wins on range. It scores 8.8 in our AI graphic design ranking against 8.6 for Express, thanks to 3.6M+ templates, AI that produces editable designs and a suite that covers posts, decks, docs and websites.
  • Adobe Express wins on price and trust. Premium costs $9.99 a month in the US, Adobe says its Firefly models are trained only on licensed and public-domain content, and it slots into Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Stock workflows.

Who should not pick Canva: teams whose legal department wants a clear AI training-data story without an enterprise contract. Who should not pick Adobe Express: anyone who relies on a huge choice of ready-made templates. If you mainly need AI images rather than layouts, see Adobe Firefly; for Canva's plans in detail, see Canva pricing.

How the AI allowances compare

Canva counts AI in uses. Tools are grouped as Standard, Premium or Ultra, and Pro allows up to 200 Premium uses or up to 20 Ultra uses a month (Business doubles that). Canva says complex prompts use more of the allowance, which resets on the first of each month.

Adobe counts AI in generative credits. Express Premium includes 250 a month, and each feature uses a set number of credits. Credits do not roll over.

In practice, both paid plans cover a few AI images or layouts a day. If you generate images all day, neither design plan is the cheapest route: look at a dedicated image generator in our AI image generator ranking.

Expert tips
  1. Pay yearly on either tool once you know you will stick with it: Canva Pro drops from US$216 to US$144 a year, and Express Premium costs $99.99 a year against about $120 paid monthly.
  2. On Canva, use Magic Resize after you finish the main design, not before; resizing a finished design saves editing every format twice.
  3. In Adobe Express, set up your Brand Kit first so Generate Template uses your fonts and colours from the start.
  4. If you mainly want more AI images, compare Firefly Pro ($19.99, includes Express Premium) with Canva Pro plus an image tool before paying for Canva's AI Pass.
  5. Whichever tool you use, check AI images for lookalike logos, artwork or trademarks before using them in paid ads.

Jargon explained

Generative credits
Adobe's units for AI features. Each image or effect uses some credits, and your plan gives a fixed number each month.
Brand kit
A saved set of your logos, fonts and colours that you can apply to any design in one click.
Commercially safe AI
Adobe's term for AI models trained only on content it has rights to use, which it says lowers the risk of copyright problems in business use.
Indemnification
A promise by the vendor to cover your legal costs if someone claims its AI output infringes their rights.
Content Credentials
Labels attached to a file that record how it was made and whether AI was used.
