Duolingo (Super and Max)
Duolingo is still the best place for most beginners to start. The free course is solid, the streaks and short lessons build a daily habit, and it covers more than 40 languages. Duolingo also has the largest body of outcome research: its own studies using ACTFL proficiency tests found that learners who finished beginner Spanish or French units reached reading and listening levels similar to several semesters of university study.
Max is the AI tier. Video Call lets you speak with Lily, an animated character who asks follow-up questions and remembers earlier calls. Duolingo is now moving Video Call into Super as well, so check whether your Super plan already includes it before paying for Max. Roleplay gives you a scenario, like ordering coffee, then a report on how you did. These are useful but short, and the full set of AI features covers only a handful of major languages.
Be clear about the research, too: most studies are written by Duolingo staff, and they mostly measure reading and listening, not speaking.
Pick it if you are starting from zero and need structure. Skip Max if speaking is your main goal; Speak or Praktika give more talk time for the money.
