Best AI Quiz Generators

AI quiz generators turn a topic, a reading, a video or a curriculum standard into ready-to-use questions in under a minute. For teachers, the real test is what comes after: can you edit the questions easily, deliver them to students, grade them automatically and send the scores to your gradebook, without putting student data at risk?

We ranked 9 tools on question quality, the inputs they accept, delivery and grading, student privacy and price as of September 2026. Privacy claims such as FERPA and COPPA compliance are the vendors' own statements unless noted.

Quick answer

Wayground (formerly Quizizz) is the best AI quiz generator for most teachers: it builds quizzes from topics, documents, videos or standards and handles delivery, grading and reports. Kahoot! is best for live, game-style review, with AI generation from $3/month. MagicSchool and Brisk are the best free all-in-one teacher tools that include quiz makers. Schools on Google Workspace get quiz help free through Gemini in Classroom.

#1 · K-12 teachers who want to create, assign and grade in one tool

Wayground

by Wayground (formerly Quizizz) · Freemium · Free for teachers
8.6/10

Wayground, the platform formerly called Quizizz, is the most complete AI quiz tool for classroom use. Give it a topic, a document, a standard or a video and it drafts a full assessment. It can even pick pause points in a video and add questions there. You then edit with quick AI tweaks (easier, shorter, translate), assign it live or as homework, and get auto-graded reports.

It has grown into a wider platform with lessons, flashcards and accommodations, and it offers lockdown mode and anti-cheating alerts for tests. The free teacher plan covers most needs; school plans need a quote.

Pick it if you are a K-12 teacher who wants AI-generated quizzes that go straight to students and come back graded. Skip it if you only need a list of questions to paste into your own LMS; a lighter tool like Conker or QuestionWell is quicker.

#2 · Live, game-style review in class

Kahoot!

by Kahoot! · Freemium · Free; Kahoot!+ Bronze $3/month
8.2/10

Kahoot! is still the best way to run a quiz as a live game show. Its AI tools draft questions from a topic, a web link or a Wikipedia article on the $3-a-month Bronze plan, and from uploaded files on Silver ($7/month). Questions tend to be short recall items, which is exactly what fast-paced games need.

The free Kahoot! Go plan allows up to 40 players but no AI generation. Deeper assessment, like open-response grading, is not its strength.

Pick it if you want an energetic review game at the end of a unit and you are happy to pay a few dollars a month for AI drafting. Skip it if you need rigorous, standards-aligned tests or written-answer grading; Wayground or QuestionWell fit better.

#3 · Teachers who want a quiz maker plus 80+ other AI tools

MagicSchool

by MagicSchool AI · Freemium · Free; Plus $8.33/month billed yearly
8.1/10

MagicSchool is a toolbox rather than a quiz platform, but its quiz, multiple-choice and text-dependent-question generators are among the best-written we tried. You can feed it a topic, a pasted text or a standard, set a grade level and question count, and export the result.

Its biggest strength for schools is privacy. MagicSchool says it complies with FERPA, COPPA, SOC 2 and New York's Ed Law 2-D, and it is Common Sense Privacy Certified. It also warns teachers before they paste personal information.

Pick it if you want a free AI assistant that writes quizzes, rubrics, lesson plans and more, and your district cares about vetted privacy. Skip it if you need a platform that delivers the quiz and grades it; pair MagicSchool with Wayground, Google Forms or your LMS.

#4 · Making a quiz from any web page, doc, PDF or YouTube video

Brisk

by Brisk Teaching · Freemium · Free for teachers
8.0/10

Brisk lives in your browser. Open an article, a Google Doc, a PDF or a YouTube video, click the Brisk button and ask for a quiz, and it drafts one from exactly that content, then drops it into Google Forms or a Doc. That "quiz from what I am looking at" workflow is the fastest we tested.

The free plan includes 20+ tools; schools can buy Premium for standards alignment and admin controls. Brisk reports a 95% Common Sense Privacy Rating and says it is FERPA and COPPA compliant. Anthropic also lists Brisk as a connected platform in Claude for Teachers.

Pick it if you build quizzes from articles and videos you already use and work in Google Workspace. Skip it if you need a full quiz platform with live games and detailed analytics.

#5 · Schools already on Google Workspace for Education

Gemini in Classroom

by Google · Free · Free with Workspace for Education
7.9/10

If your school runs on Google, you already have a capable quiz generator. Gemini in Classroom, free to all Workspace for Education accounts since mid-2025, adds more than 30 AI tools, including quiz and rubric creation that flows into Classroom assignments and Forms grading. Teachers can also build quizzes from their own materials in Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM).

The privacy position is strong for a big-tech tool: Google says Workspace for Education data is not reviewed by humans or used to train models, and under-18 students get extra guardrails. Question quality is solid but less tuned to standards than MagicSchool or QuestionWell.

Pick it if your district uses Google Workspace for Education and wants no new vendor to vet. Skip it if your school uses Microsoft 365 or Canvas as its hub, or you want game-style delivery.

#6 · Students making practice tests from their own notes

Quizlet

by Quizlet · Freemium · Free; Plus $9.99/month
7.6/10

Quizlet is the student's choice here. Upload notes, a document or a lecture recording and it generates practice tests alongside flashcards. For self-testing before an exam it works well, and most students already have an account.

For teachers it is less compelling than Wayground or Kahoot!: grading and reports are basic, and many AI features now need Plus at $9.99 a month. It publishes fewer education-specific privacy certifications than MagicSchool or Brisk.

Pick it if you are a student who wants practice tests from your own material. Skip it if you are a teacher who needs graded assessments and class reports.

#7 · Rigorous, standards-aligned questions exported anywhere

QuestionWell

by QuestionWell · Freemium · Free to try
7.5/10

QuestionWell is built by a former science teacher and it shows. It writes standards-aligned questions using learning-science principles, and it can analyse your existing materials for rigour and cognitive level, which few rivals do. Its 22+ export options, from Google Forms and Canvas to Kahoot and Blooket, mean it fits whatever delivery tool you already use.

It does not deliver or grade quizzes itself, and pricing is not published on its homepage, which makes budgeting harder.

Pick it if you care most about question quality and want to send quizzes into an existing platform. Skip it if you want a single app that also runs the quiz and grades it.

#8 · Quick standards-aligned quizzes pushed to Google Forms or Canvas

Conker

by Conker · Freemium · Free version
7.3/10

Conker is a no-fuss quiz generator: choose a topic or standard, pick question types and grade level, and export to Google Forms or Canvas. Its library of standards-aligned quizzes starts with NGSS (science) and TEKS (Texas) standards, and every quiz includes read-aloud for students who need it.

It does less than Wayground or MagicSchool, and it publishes less detail about student-data handling than the privacy-certified tools. For a quick formative check, it is fast.

Pick it if you teach science or in Texas and want a quick quiz in Forms or Canvas. Skip it if your district requires a signed data agreement and third-party privacy certification before approving tools.

#9 · Drafting custom question banks from your own files

ChatGPT for Teachers

by OpenAI · Free · Free for verified US K-12 teachers
7.2/10

ChatGPT for Teachers is the most flexible question writer here: upload a reading, a unit plan or last year's test and ask for 20 questions at three difficulty levels with a mark scheme. It connects to Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, and OpenAI says the workspace is FERPA-aligned and not used to train models by default.

It ranks lower only because it is not a quiz platform. There is no delivery, no auto-grading and no class reports, so you copy the questions elsewhere.

Pick it if you are a verified US K-12 teacher who wants a free, private drafting partner for question banks. Skip it if you teach outside the US or you want quizzes delivered and graded for you.

Student privacy: what to check before you use a quiz tool

Quiz tools collect student names, answers and scores, so privacy law applies. In the US two laws matter most:

  • FERPA protects student education records. A vendor can receive them only as a "school official" under a contract with the school.
  • COPPA covers online services that collect personal information from children under 13. The FTC published updated COPPA rules in April 2025.

Before assigning a quiz tool to students, check for a signed data privacy agreement (DPA) with your district, a public statement that student data is not sold or used to train AI, and ideally a third-party review such as Common Sense Privacy. Among the tools here, MagicSchool (Common Sense Privacy Certified) and Brisk (95% Common Sense rating) publish the strongest education privacy credentials. Google covers Gemini in Classroom under Workspace for Education terms.

Getting good questions from AI

  • Give it the source. Questions generated from your own reading are more accurate than questions generated from a topic name.
  • Name the level. Say "Grade 8, mixed difficulty, 2 recall, 5 application, 3 analysis".
  • Ask for distractors that reflect real mistakes. Wrong answer options should match common misconceptions, not obvious nonsense.
  • Check every answer key. AI tools still mark the wrong option as correct now and then.
Expert tips
  1. Generate from the text you taught, not the topic name. In Brisk, open the actual article or Doc first, then click Create Quiz, so every question matches what students read.
  2. On Kahoot!'s $3 Bronze plan, paste a Wikipedia URL to draft questions, then edit out anything that goes beyond your syllabus.
  3. Ask for a specific mix: "10 questions: 3 recall, 5 application, 2 analysis, with one misconception-based distractor each". AI tools default to too many recall questions.
  4. Never paste student names or IEP details into a free consumer chatbot. Use your district-approved tool, such as MagicSchool Enterprise or Gemini under your school account.
  5. Spot-check answer keys before assigning. It takes two minutes and saves an awkward regrade.

Jargon explained

FERPA
A US law that protects student education records and limits who schools can share them with.
COPPA
A US law that requires parental consent before online services collect personal information from children under 13.
Data privacy agreement (DPA)
A contract between a school district and a vendor that sets out how student data is used, stored and deleted.
Standards-aligned
Questions written to match an official learning goal, such as a state maths or science standard.
Distractor
A wrong answer option in a multiple-choice question.
Formative assessment
A low-stakes quiz used during learning to check understanding, not for a final grade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI quiz generator for teachers?

Wayground for a full create-assign-grade workflow, MagicSchool for high-quality question writing with strong privacy credentials, and Gemini in Classroom if your school uses Google Workspace for Education. All three are free for individual teachers.

Is Quizizz still available?

Quizizz is now called Wayground. It works the same way for teachers, with added AI tools for lessons, videos and accommodations.

Does Kahoot! have a free AI quiz generator?

No. The free Kahoot! Go plan does not include AI generation. AI question creation starts on Kahoot!+ Bronze at $3/month billed yearly, with file-based generation on Silver.

Are AI quiz generators FERPA and COPPA compliant?

Many education vendors say they are, including MagicSchool, Brisk and SchoolAI, and Google says Gemini for Education supports FERPA and COPPA compliance. Compliance also depends on your district signing a data agreement and on how teachers use the tool, so check with your district first.

Can AI make a quiz from a YouTube video?

Yes. Brisk makes quizzes from YouTube videos in the browser, Wayground adds questions at AI-chosen pause points in videos, and Gizmo and Knowt turn videos into study quizzes for students.
