Best AI Background Removers

An AI background remover finds the main subject in a photo, such as a person, product or pet, and cuts it out so the background becomes transparent. Good tools handle the hard parts: loose hair, fur, see-through glass and shadows.

The task is now so common that it is built into phones, Canva and Adobe's free tools. So the real differences are in edge quality on tricky images, batch processing, output resolution and API cost. We ranked seven tools, from paid e-commerce apps to a free open model you can run yourself. One big change to note: remove.bg says its background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai on 1 December 2026.

Quick answer

Photoroom is the best AI background remover for most people, especially online sellers: it is accurate, batch-edits hundreds of photos, and background removal uses no credits on paid plans. remove.bg is the best for developers, with 50 free API calls a month. For free one-off cut-outs, use Adobe's free Background Remover or the lift subject feature built into iPhone and Mac Photos.

#1 · Online sellers and product photos

Photoroom

by Photoroom · Freemium · Free app; paid plans $5.99–$249.99 in-app
8.8/10

Photoroom is the most complete background remover for anyone selling online. It cuts out products cleanly, then adds a white or AI-generated studio background with realistic shadows, and exports at the right size for each marketplace. Batch mode handles hundreds of photos in one go.

On paid plans, background removal and other core tools do not use AI credits, so you can process as many images as your export limit allows. It holds 4.8 stars from about 230,000 App Store ratings. Some users report that a generated background changes when they move the product.

Pick it if you run a shop or make product listings. Skip it if you only need a single transparent PNG now and then; the free options below are enough.

#2 · Developers and high-volume API use

remove.bg

by Canva (Canva Austria GmbH) · Freemium · Free previews; credits for full resolution
8.6/10

remove.bg is the name most people know, and its API is still the easiest to wire into a website or app. The first 50 API calls each month are free, and paid users can process up to 500 images a minute. Output goes up to 50 megapixels as JPG, WebP or ZIP, or 10 megapixels as transparent PNG.

The web tool is equally simple: drop in a photo and download the cut-out. Accuracy on hair and fur is very good.

Two things to watch. Full-resolution downloads cost credits, and per-image pricing is higher than bundled tools. And remove.bg, a Canva brand, says background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai on 1 December 2026, so API users should check migration plans. Pick it if you need a reliable API. Skip it if you only need occasional free cut-outs.

#3 · Free cut-outs and Photoshop users

Adobe Background Remover

by Adobe · Freemium · Free with an Adobe account
8.5/10

Adobe's free Background Remover, now under the Firefly brand, is the best free web option. Sign in with a free Adobe account, upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 100 MB, and download a transparent PNG. You get a set number of free uses each day.

The same technology powers Remove Background in Photoshop, where you get a layer mask you can refine by hand. That makes Adobe the best choice when a cut-out has to be perfect, because you can fix any stray hair yourself.

Batch processing is weaker than Photoroom or remove.bg unless you script Photoshop. Pick it if you want free, high-quality single cut-outs, or you already use Photoshop. Skip it if you process hundreds of product shots a week.

#4 · Social posts and marketing designs

Canva Background Remover

by Canva · Paid · Canva Pro subscription
8.3/10

Canva's Background Remover is one click inside the design you are already making. Cut out a person or product, drop it onto a template, add text, and you have a finished post. For marketers and small businesses that is the fastest path from photo to design.

Canva owns remove.bg and Leonardo.Ai, and the cut-out quality is strong for social media use.

It needs Canva Pro or a Teams plan, so it is not free. Pick it if you already design in Canva. Skip it if you only need a transparent PNG; Adobe's free tool is enough.

#5 · Free, instant cut-outs on iPhone and Mac

Apple Photos (Lift Subject)

by Apple · Free · Free (built in)
8.1/10

If you have an iPhone, iPad or Mac, you already own a good background remover. In Photos, touch and hold the main subject and it lifts out. You can copy it, share it or paste it into another app. It runs on the device, so photos are not uploaded.

It works best on clear subjects such as people, pets and products. There is no batch mode, no control over which object it picks when there are several, and no high-resolution export settings.

Pick it if you want a quick sticker or cut-out for messages and slides. Skip it if you need consistent, high-resolution cut-outs for a store or design work.

#6 · Developers who want to self-host

BRIA RMBG-2.0

by BRIA AI · Open source · Free (non-commercial weights)
7.8/10

RMBG-2.0 is an open background-removal model from BRIA AI, built on the BiRefNet architecture and trained on more than 15,000 hand-labelled images, BRIA says. Developers can download it from Hugging Face and run it on their own servers, which keeps images private and removes per-image fees for research and personal projects.

It outputs an alpha matte (a soft-edged mask), which handles hair and semi-transparent edges better than a hard cut-out.

The licence is the catch: CC BY-NC 4.0 means no commercial use without buying a BRIA licence or using its paid API. Pick it if you are a developer or researcher who wants to self-host. Skip it if you are not comfortable running Python models.

#7 · Mobile creators who edit further

Picsart

by Picsart · Freemium · Free; paid from $4.99/week
7.8/10

Picsart's background remover is quick and accurate enough for most social content, and it sits inside a full mobile editor. Cut yourself out of a selfie, drop in a new scene, add stickers and text, and post.

It rates 4.7 stars from about 1.2 million App Store reviews. Edges on fine hair are a touch behind Photoroom and remove.bg, and the weekly subscription option is poor value if you use it often.

Pick it if you are a creator who edits on your phone. Skip it if you need product-grade cut-outs; developers should look at Picsart's separate Remove Background API or at Photoroom's.

The remove.bg move to Leonardo.Ai

remove.bg is a brand of Canva Austria GmbH. Its API page says that from 1 December 2026, background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai, another Canva company, alongside other creative tools. If you use the remove.bg API in production, check the migration notes and test the new endpoints before that date.

How to get cleaner edges

  • Contrast helps. A subject in front of a plain, different-coloured wall cuts out far more cleanly.
  • Light the edges. Backlit hair is easier for AI to separate than hair in shadow.
  • Export PNG for transparency. JPG has no transparent background; remove.bg's larger 50 MP limit applies only to JPG, WebP and ZIP.
  • Refine by hand when it matters. In Photoshop, the AI mask is a starting point you can brush in or out.
Expert tips
  1. On iPhone or Mac, touch and hold the subject in Photos to lift it out for free before paying for any app.
  2. Developers: use remove.bg's 50 free monthly API calls for testing, and plan for the move to Leonardo.Ai on 1 December 2026.
  3. Sellers: on Photoroom's paid plans, background removal does not use AI credits, so batch your whole catalogue in one go.
  4. Need a transparent PNG larger than 10 MP from remove.bg? Export ZIP, which supports up to 50 MP and keeps the alpha mask separately.
  5. For hair and glass, pick a tool that outputs a soft alpha matte (BRIA RMBG-2.0 or Photoshop masks) instead of a hard cut-out.

Jargon explained

Transparent PNG
An image file with no background: the empty areas are see-through, so you can place the subject on anything.
Alpha matte
A greyscale mask that says how see-through each pixel is. Soft greys let fine hair and glass blend naturally.
API
A way for software to use a service automatically. Developers send images to the API and get cut-outs back.
Batch processing
Running the same edit on many images at once instead of one by one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI background remover?

Photoroom for most people and online sellers, thanks to accurate cut-outs and batch editing. remove.bg is best for developers, and Adobe's free tool is best for occasional use.

What is the best free background remover?

Adobe's free Background Remover (daily free uses with an Adobe account) and the lift-subject feature in Apple Photos. remove.bg gives free previews and 50 free API calls a month.

Is remove.bg shutting down?

remove.bg says its background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai, another Canva company, on 1 December 2026. It is a move, not a shutdown, but API users should plan the switch.

Can I use an open-source background remover commercially?

Check the licence. BRIA's RMBG-2.0 weights are CC BY-NC 4.0, which bans commercial use without a paid licence or the BRIA API.

Why does my cut-out have a halo around it?

The AI left some background colour on the edge pixels. Try a photo with more contrast, or refine the mask in Photoshop.
