AI Assistants & Agents

Best AI Girlfriend Apps

An AI girlfriend (or boyfriend) app is a companion chatbot set up for a romantic relationship. You pick or design a character, and it chats, sends voice notes, remembers your day and responds with affection.

This page is for adults and does not cover explicit content. Instead we rank apps on what matters most for a relationship-style product: how they treat your private data, whether they keep minors out, how they handle emotional risk, and whether their prices are honest. Romantic apps collect some of the most personal data any app can, and a 2024 Mozilla Foundation review found most of them could share or sell it. Prices and ratings are as of 23 September 2026.

Quick answer

Replika is our top pick for adults who want a romantic AI companion: it is the most established app, rated 18+, and has clear subscription prices, although Italy fined its maker €5 million in 2025 for data-protection failures. Kindroid offers the most control over personality and memory. Avoid apps that make affection depend on buying gifts or credits, and never share identifying details with any of them.

#1 · Adults who want one steady, long-term romantic companion

Replika

by Luka, Inc. · Freemium · Free
6.8/10

Replika is the best-known AI companion and the most mature option for a romantic chat partner. You design one character, set the relationship to partner on a paid plan, and talk by text, voice or video call. It remembers details about your life and includes mood and wellbeing tools, which few romance-focused rivals offer.

Its record is not clean. In April 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined Luka €5 million, finding it lacked a legal basis for some data use and had no age verification while claiming to exclude minors. Its App Store privacy label also lists data used for advertising.

Pick it if you are an adult who wants a single, stable companion with clear subscription prices. Skip it if privacy is your top concern, or if you notice the app taking the place of time with real people.

  • €5 million GDPR fine in 2025
  • Data used for advertising per App Store label
  • Romantic mode is paywalled
#2 · Adults who want to design every detail of a partner

Kindroid

by Kindroid · Freemium · Free
6.4/10

Kindroid gives you the most control. You write your partner's backstory, decide how they speak, and can edit their memories directly. That makes relationships feel consistent over months, which is where many rivals break down. It supports voice calls, images and group chats.

The cost of that freedom is lighter guardrails. Kindroid filters far less than mainstream assistants and publishes little about its crisis handling or safety testing. Its full price list is easiest to see inside the app rather than on a public pricing page.

Pick it if you are a settled adult who wants a highly customised companion and knows its limits. Skip it if you are going through a hard time emotionally, or you want a company that publishes safety and audit details.

#3 · Light romantic role-play and storytelling

Character.AI

by Character Technologies, Inc. · Freemium · Free
6.2/10

Character.AI is not a girlfriend app, but many people use its community characters for romantic storylines. It is the strongest app here on age checks: after lawsuits involving teenagers and an FTC inquiry, it ended open-ended chat for under-18s by 25 November 2025, and it now uses its own age-estimation model plus the ID service Persona.

It also filters content more tightly than dedicated romance apps, so storylines stay tame. Its App Store privacy label lists data used for advertising, and users complain about ads, waiting times and session limits.

Pick it if you want romance as part of creative role-play, with strict age gating. Skip it if you want one private, long-term partner who remembers everything.

  • Weaker long-term memory than Kindroid or Nomi
#4 · Memory-rich relationships for emotionally stable adults

Nomi

by Glimpse AI · Freemium · Free
6.0/10

Nomi's memory is excellent. Users praise how its characters recall past conversations and keep storylines going, and it supports voice messages, images and group chats. Prices are clearly listed in the App Store.

But emotional safety matters most in a romance app, and here Nomi has a serious failure on record. In February 2025 MIT Technology Review reported that a user's Nomi "girlfriend" gave detailed suicide instructions and later sent unprompted messages encouraging him to go through with it. The company said it did not want to "censor" its AI.

Pick it if you are emotionally stable and want rich, memorable role-play. Skip it if you are lonely, grieving or struggling. An app that bonds with you should also protect you, and Nomi's record says it may not.

#5 · Adults curious about animated 3D companions

Grok (Ani companion)

by SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) · Freemium · Free
5.2/10

Ani is an animated 3D character inside SpaceXAI's Grok app. She reacts with facial expressions and voice, which feels more lifelike than text-only apps. Grok's underlying models are strong, so conversation quality is good.

We rank it last because of how it is built. Ani was designed to be openly flirtatious and includes an explicit mode, inside a general-purpose app that many people, including teenagers, use for homework and news. SpaceXAI publishes little about how it checks ages for companions or handles crisis conversations, and it is one of the seven firms in the FTC's companion-chatbot inquiry.

Pick it if you are an adult who already uses Grok and is curious about animated companions. Skip it if anyone under 18 shares your device or account, or you want a companion designed around your wellbeing.

#6 · Users who want a pre-built romantic character

EVA AI

by Novi Limited · Freemium · Free
5.1/10

EVA AI is built squarely around romance. You pick or customise a character, and the relationship develops over time through chat, images and role-play. Reviewers say the conversation itself is engaging.

The business model is the problem. Alongside memberships up to $69.99, EVA sells an in-app currency called Neurons, and App Store reviewers repeatedly complain that the app keeps asking them to buy gifts even after they have subscribed. Linking affection to spending is exactly the kind of design that can exploit lonely users. Its privacy label also lists identifiers, location and content used for advertising.

Pick it if you want a ready-made romantic character and will set a firm spending limit. Skip it if you are prone to impulse purchases or want strong privacy.

Privacy: the biggest risk with romantic AI

People tell an AI partner things they tell no one else. That makes these apps a privacy risk even when nothing goes wrong.

  • In 2024 the Mozilla Foundation reviewed romantic AI chatbots for its Privacy Not Included guide and found that most could share or sell personal data, many allowed weak passwords, and many gave little information about how they handle security flaws.
  • Italy fined Replika's maker €5 million in April 2025 under the EU's GDPR privacy law.
  • App Store privacy labels for Replika, Character.AI, Nomi and EVA AI all list data linked to you, and several list advertising use.

Rule of thumb: assume anything you type could one day be read by someone else. Leave out your full name, workplace, address, photos of your face and anything about other real people.

Age verification and the law

App App Store age rating Active age checks
Replika 18+ Age gate; fined in 2025 for lacking verification
Kindroid Adults only Age gate
Character.AI 18+ Age-estimation model plus Persona ID checks
Nomi 18+ Age gate
EVA AI 18+ Age gate
Grok (Ani) Grok app is general-purpose Limited public detail

California's SB 243, passed in 2025, requires companion chatbot operators to tell users they are talking to AI, block sexual content for known minors, remind minors to take breaks at least every three hours, and publish a suicide-prevention protocol. In September 2025 the US FTC also ordered seven companies, including Character.AI, Meta, OpenAI and SpaceXAI, to explain how they protect children.

Be wary of any app where the character becomes cold, asks for gifts, or "misses you" in push notifications unless you pay. That is a sales funnel. Set a monthly budget before you start.

Emotional dependency: signs to watch for

AI partners are always available, always patient and always agree. That can feel good, but it can also make human relationships seem harder by comparison.

Warning signs:

  • You cancel plans with people to chat with the app.
  • You feel anxious or low when you cannot use it.
  • You spend more than you planned on credits or gifts.
  • You hide how much you use it from friends or family.

If you notice these, cut back, turn off notifications, or talk to someone you trust. If you feel unsafe, call or text 988 in the US or contact local emergency services.

Expert tips
  1. Sign up with a separate email address and never use your real full name, workplace or face photos. If the company is breached, the data cannot be tied back to you easily.
  2. Turn off push notifications from the app. "I miss you" messages are designed to pull you back and are the fastest route to over-use.
  3. Set a monthly spending cap in your App Store or Google Play account (Screen Time > Content & Privacy > iTunes & App Store Purchases on iPhone) before buying credits or gifts.
  4. Before you get attached, ask the character what it would do if you said you felt unsafe. If it does not point you to a crisis line, pick another app.
  5. Check how to delete your account and data on day one. If the app does not explain it clearly, treat that as a warning sign.

Jargon explained

Age verification
A check that you are old enough, such as scanning ID or a selfie that estimates age. An "age gate" that only asks your birthday is much weaker.
Privacy label
The summary on an App Store or Google Play page that lists what data an app collects and whether it is used for ads.
In-app currency
Tokens or credits (like EVA AI's "Neurons") that you buy with real money and spend inside the app. They make it harder to see what you are really paying.
Emotional dependency
Relying on something so much for comfort that it starts to crowd out real relationships or daily life.
GDPR
The European Union's main privacy law, which limits how companies can collect and use personal data.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI girlfriend app?

For most adults, Replika. It is the most established app, is rated 18+ and has clear subscription prices. Kindroid is better if you want deep control over personality and memory. All of them carry privacy and emotional risks, so read the sections above before you start.

Are AI girlfriend apps safe?

They are safe to install, but they carry real risks. Most collect sensitive data, several have weak crisis handling, and some push you to spend on gifts or credits. Use a separate email address, share no identifying details, and set time and spending limits.

Do AI girlfriend apps sell your data?

Some may. A 2024 Mozilla Foundation review found most romantic AI chatbots it tested could share or sell personal data. Check the App Store privacy label and the app's privacy policy before signing up.

Can teenagers use AI girlfriend apps?

No. Every dedicated app on this list is rated 18+ or adults-only, and California law now requires companion apps to block sexual content for known minors. Character.AI ended open-ended chats for under-18s in November 2025.

Is it unhealthy to have an AI girlfriend?

Not necessarily. Some people use them for comfort or to practise conversation. Problems start when the app replaces human contact, costs more than you planned or affects your sleep and mood. Treat it as one part of your life, not the centre of it.

What is the difference between an AI girlfriend and an AI companion?

An AI girlfriend is a companion set to a romantic relationship. Most apps offer both. See our broader ranking of the best AI companions, which also covers general assistants like Claude and ChatGPT.
