Customer Service & Voice Agents

Best AI Chatbots for Your Website

A website chatbot is the chat bubble in the corner of a site. Modern ones are AI agents: you point them at your help pages, product catalogue or documents, and they answer visitors' questions in plain language, capture leads and hand tricky chats to a person.

We ranked seven chatbots you can add to a website with a snippet of code or a plugin. We weighted answer quality most, then ease of setup, price and how well the bot hands over to your team. This page is for adding a chat widget to your site; for a full support operation with a help desk, see best AI customer service software. Prices are list prices as of 23 September 2026.

Quick answer

Intercom with its Fin AI agent gives the best answers and handoffs, from $29 per seat plus $0.99 per outcome. Chatbase is the fastest way to get a custom AI bot trained on your site, with a free tier and plans from $40 a month. Tidio with Lyro suits small online shops on a budget, and HubSpot's free chatbot builder is ideal if you already use HubSpot CRM. Developers who want full control should use Botpress.

Expert reviews

#1 · Businesses that want the best AI answers with a real support inbox behind them

Intercom (Fin)

by Intercom · Paid · $29/seat/mo + $0.99 per outcome
8.3/10

Intercom's Messenger with the Fin AI agent is the most capable website chatbot here. Fin answers from your help center, documents and past conversations, can take actions through connected systems, and passes chats to your team inside the same inbox when it gets stuck. Intercom says Fin resolves 76% of conversations on average; independent tests report lower figures, so treat that as a ceiling.

The cost model has two parts. You need at least one seat, from $29 per month on the annual Essential plan, and you pay $0.99 for each outcome Fin delivers. For a site with a few hundred AI-handled chats a month, that is roughly $200 to $400 plus seats.

There is no free plan, and costs rise with success. Small sites that just want a FAQ bot will find Chatbase or Tidio far cheaper.

Pick it if support quality matters and you want AI and humans in one tool. Skip it if you need a free or very cheap bot for a small site.

#2 · Small and mid-sized sites wanting a custom-trained bot fast

Chatbase

by Chatbase · Freemium · Free (50 message credits); Hobby $40/mo
8.0/10

Chatbase is the quickest route from zero to a working AI chatbot. You give it your website URL, upload PDFs or connect a knowledge source, and it builds an agent you can embed with one line of code. Paid plans unlock more advanced AI models; you can set its tone and add actions such as collecting leads or creating tickets.

The free plan is for testing only: 50 message credits and agents that are deleted after 14 days of inactivity. Real use starts at $40 a month for 700 credits. Help desk, voice, telephony and API access need the $150 Standard plan, and removing the Chatbase logo costs another $99 a month.

It is less polished than Intercom at handing chats to humans, since it is a bot builder first, not a support inbox. Credits can also run out quickly on busy sites.

Pick it if you want a trained bot live today with no developers. Skip it if you need a full human support inbox or expect thousands of chats a month.

#3 · Small online stores and local businesses

Tidio (Lyro)

by Tidio · Freemium · Free; Starter $24.17/mo billed yearly ($29 monthly)
7.9/10

Tidio combines live chat, a simple inbox and the Lyro AI agent in a package aimed at small businesses, especially Shopify and WordPress stores. Lyro answers from your FAQs and help content, and hands off to a human when it cannot help.

Pricing starts low. The free plan covers 50 conversations, Starter is $29 a month ($24.17 billed yearly), and Lyro is an add-on from $39 a month ($32.50 billed yearly) for 50 AI conversations. Tidio only counts a conversation as billable when a human agent replies, which is a fair rule. On its Premium plan, Tidio guarantees a 50% Lyro resolution rate, one of the few vendors to put a number in writing.

The limits show at scale: 50 Lyro conversations is small, and higher Lyro volumes get expensive compared with per-resolution rivals. Answer quality on complex questions trails Intercom.

Pick it if you run a small store and want chat plus AI on a budget. Skip it if you handle thousands of chats or complex products.

#4 · Businesses using HubSpot CRM for marketing and sales

HubSpot

by HubSpot · Freemium · Free chatbot builder
7.9/10

HubSpot gives you two kinds of website chatbot. The free one is a no-code builder: you create question-and-answer flows that qualify leads, book meetings and log every chat in the free HubSpot CRM. It is not a true AI agent, but it is free and works well for lead capture.

The AI option is the Customer Agent, which answers open questions from your knowledge base, across chat, email and other channels, for $0.50 per resolution. HubSpot claims a 70% average resolution rate. The catch is that it needs a Professional or Enterprise HubSpot subscription, which is a big step up from free.

The main advantage over standalone bots is context. Every chat lands on a contact record, so sales and support see the history, and marketing can follow up automatically.

Pick it if HubSpot is already your CRM. Skip it if you only need a chatbot and do not want a CRM platform. See our AI CRM ranking.

#5 · Developers and agencies building custom multi-channel agents

Botpress

by Botpress · Freemium · Free (25 conversations); Plus $150/mo
7.8/10

Botpress is a platform for building AI agents with as much control as you want. A visual studio handles flows, knowledge bases and tools, and developers can drop into code for custom logic and integrations. The same agent can run on your website, WhatsApp, Messenger, Slack and Teams.

Pricing switched to conversations. The free plan allows 25 a month, which is only for testing. Plus costs $150 a month on annual billing for 250 conversations and a $25 AI usage credit, with unlimited agents and a white-label web chat. Extra conversations cost $0.65 each, and both conversations and AI credit auto-recharge when you hit 95% of quota, so set limits.

The learning curve is the downside. A non-technical owner can build a basic FAQ bot, but the real value comes from custom work, which takes time.

Pick it if you or your agency want a fully customised agent. Skip it if you want a bot live in minutes with no configuration.

#6 · Small teams wanting shared inbox plus AI at flat pricing

Crisp

by Crisp · Freemium · Free (2 seats); Mini $45/mo
7.7/10

Crisp is a live chat and shared inbox tool that bundles AI credits into flat monthly plans that each include a set number of seats. The free plan gives two seats and a chat widget. Paid plans start at $45 a month for four seats, and each tier includes AI credit for automated conversations: roughly 90 on Mini, 450 on Essentials and 1,350 on Plus, by Crisp's own estimates.

That makes costs predictable for small teams, and the product covers website chat, email, WhatsApp and Messenger in one inbox with mobile apps. The AI agent learns from your knowledge base and supports multiple languages.

The AI is less capable than Intercom's or Chatbase's for complex questions, and the included AI credit on lower plans is small. Advanced features like ticketing and white labelling need the $295 Plus plan.

Pick it if you want an affordable team inbox with some AI included. Skip it if AI answers are the main thing you are buying.

#7 · Enterprise CX teams building one agent for chat and voice

Voiceflow

by Voiceflow · Freemium · Pricing on request
7.4/10

Voiceflow has moved up-market into an enterprise AI agent platform for customer experience teams. It lets you design one agent that runs on your website, in mobile apps, over the phone, on WhatsApp and by SMS, combining AI playbooks with fixed workflows and guardrails. You can pick the language model (GPT, Claude, Gemini and others), which avoids lock-in, and it includes testing, staging and LLM-based evaluation tools.

Voiceflow says it has more than 4,000 customers, including StubHub, Allstate and Vodafone, and quotes a customer that resolved 59% of 7,000 support tickets with AI; these are vendor figures.

The downside for most website owners is access. Business pricing is no longer shown publicly; you book a demo. It also takes design and technical work to get the most from it.

Pick it if you are a larger CX team that wants one well-governed agent across chat and voice. Skip it if you want a cheap, quick chat widget for a small site.

What happened to Drift

Drift, once the best-known sales chatbot, was bought by Salesloft in 2024. Salesloft's site now says it has transitioned from Drift to 1mind, a partner whose AI chat agents feed buyer signals into Salesloft's revenue platform. If you still run Drift, check your renewal terms and plan a move. For sales-focused chat, compare HubSpot or Intercom, and see our AI for sales ranking.

How to get good answers from any chatbot

  • Feed it clean content. Update your FAQ, shipping, returns and pricing pages before training. The bot repeats whatever it reads.
  • Limit it to your sources. Turn on settings that stop the bot answering from general knowledge, so it says "I don't know" instead of guessing.
  • Set a clear handoff. Show a "talk to a person" option, and collect an email when no one is online.
  • Review chats weekly. Read unanswered and low-rated chats, then add the missing information.
  • Disclose it is AI. Name the bot as an assistant so visitors know what to expect.

How to choose

  • Support-heavy business wanting the best AI: Intercom.
  • Quick custom bot, no developers: Chatbase.
  • Small online shop: Tidio or Crisp.
  • Already on HubSpot: HubSpot's builder and Customer Agent.
  • Custom agent, developer or agency: Botpress, or Voiceflow for enterprise voice plus chat.

For phone calls, see AI receptionists. For general-purpose assistants like ChatGPT, see best AI chatbots.

Expert tips
  1. Before launch, write 20 real customer questions (including awkward ones) and test the bot with each. Fix the source content where answers are wrong.
  2. Turn off answers from general AI knowledge, so the bot only uses your content and says it does not know otherwise.
  3. On credit-based plans (Chatbase, Botpress), set usage caps or disable auto-recharge until you know your real volume.
  4. Put the chatbot on high-intent pages first, such as pricing, checkout and contact, rather than every page. You get better leads and use fewer credits.
  5. Connect the bot to your CRM or inbox so every chat, email and lead is saved and followed up.

Jargon explained

Hallucination
When an AI gives an answer that sounds right but is made up or wrong.
Handoff
Passing a chat from the bot to a human team member, ideally with the full conversation attached.
Message credit
A unit some chatbot tools use to count AI replies. Each answer uses one or more credits, depending on the model.
Training
Giving a chatbot your website pages, documents or FAQs so it can answer from them. It does not change the underlying AI model.
Widget
The chat bubble and window added to your website with a short piece of code or a plugin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI chatbot for a website?

Intercom with Fin gives the best answers and human handoff. Chatbase is the fastest and cheapest way to get a custom-trained bot, and Tidio suits small online stores.

Is there a free AI chatbot for websites?

Yes, with limits. Chatbase gives 50 message credits, Tidio 50 conversations, Botpress 25 conversations, and HubSpot has a free rule-based chatbot builder. Most free tiers are for testing, not real traffic.

How do I add an AI chatbot to my website?

Sign up, train the bot on your site URL or documents, adjust its tone and handoff rules, then paste the provided code snippet into your site or install the plugin for WordPress or Shopify.

Can a website chatbot make things up?

Yes. AI bots can give confident wrong answers, known as hallucinations. Limit the bot to your own content, test it with tricky questions, and give visitors an easy way to reach a person.

How much does an AI website chatbot cost?

From free to about $50 a month for small sites. Larger sites pay per resolution ($0.50–$0.99 at HubSpot and Intercom) or per conversation or credit on Chatbase, Botpress and Tidio.

What is the difference between a website chatbot and ChatGPT?

A website chatbot is trained on your business's content and lives on your site to answer customers. ChatGPT is a general assistant for anyone. See our best AI chatbots ranking for general assistants.
