Best Deepfake Detectors

A deepfake is a fake video, image or voice recording made with AI to look or sound like a real person. Deepfakes are now used in scams (a cloned voice asking for money), fake job interviews, fraud against call centres and political disinformation. Deepfake detectors try to spot them.

This is a hard problem. A 2025 study called Deepfake-Eval-2024 collected real deepfakes that circulated online in 2024 and found that well-known open-source detectors lost about half their accuracy compared with older lab tests. Commercial detectors did better, but none matched trained human forensic analysts. So we weighted independent evidence most heavily and treat vendors' "99% accuracy" figures as claims. Prices are as of 23 September 2026.

Quick answer

Reality Defender is the best all-round deepfake detector for organisations: it covers audio, images and video, protects calls and video meetings in real time, and has a free API tier of 50 scans a month. Pindrop Pulse is the strongest choice for voice deepfakes in call centres and hiring interviews. Hive is the best free option for individuals checking a suspicious video or image. No tool is accurate enough to replace a human expert on high-stakes cases.

#1 · Banks, media and enterprises protecting calls, meetings and uploads

Reality Defender

by Reality Defender · Freemium · Free API tier
7.8/10

Reality Defender covers the most ground. It checks uploaded audio, images and video, and it also runs in real time inside contact centres and video meetings, where many deepfake scams now happen. Developers get a free API tier of 50 audio or image scans a month, which is rare among enterprise-focused vendors.

Its recognition comes mostly from industry bodies rather than academic tests: it won the RSA Conference Innovation Sandbox in April 2025 and Gartner has highlighted it in deepfake-detection research. We did not find a large public head-to-head study that confirms its accuracy against rivals, so we score that cautiously.

Pick it if you run a business that needs to protect calls, meetings and uploaded media in one place. Skip it if you are an individual who only needs to check the odd video; Hive's free extension is simpler.

Hive

by Hive · Freemium · Free (extension and demo)
7.6/10

Hive is the easiest way for an ordinary person to check a suspicious video or image. Its free Chrome extension scans media on the page you are viewing, with no account. Behind it are the same models Hive sells to platforms and to the US Department of Defense, which partnered with Hive on synthetic-media detection.

Hive has the best independent evidence for AI images, from a 2024 University of Chicago study. For video and audio deepfakes, we found less public testing. Its results are a confidence score with limited explanation, which is fine for a quick check but weaker as evidence.

Pick it if you want a free, fast check on something you saw online. Skip it if you need a detailed forensic report for legal or HR use; Sensity or Reality Defender are better suited.

#3 · Call centres and hiring teams facing voice and video impersonation

Pindrop Pulse

by Pindrop · Enterprise · Enterprise quote
7.4/10

Pindrop has spent more than a decade on phone fraud, and Pulse is its deepfake detector for voice calls and video meetings. It checks for synthetic speech, voice cloning, face swaps and whether a real person is on camera, and it plugs into Teams, Zoom, Webex and hiring platforms to catch fake job candidates.

Its evidence is stronger than most. Pindrop cites an NPR test with outside voice-cloning tools in which it correctly identified 81 of 84 clips, and it publishes error rates: 99% detection on known engines, over 90% on unseen ones and under 1% false positives, which are vendor figures.

Pick it if you run a call centre, bank help line or remote hiring process. Skip it if you need to check images or uploaded social-media videos; it is built for live calls and meetings, and it is sold only to businesses.

#4 · Police, courts and forensic investigators

Sensity AI

by Sensity · Enterprise · Free trial
7.1/10

Sensity is aimed at investigators rather than the public. It checks video, images and audio using several layers, from pixel patterns and voice features to file metadata, and produces forensic reports designed to support police work, court cases and fraud investigations. It can run on-premise, which matters when evidence cannot leave a secure network.

Its headline figure, 98% accuracy on public datasets, is a vendor claim. The Deepfake-Eval-2024 study showed that public-dataset scores can overstate real-world performance, so treat it with care.

Pick it if you need detailed, explainable reports for legal or investigative use. Skip it if you want a quick consumer check or published prices.

#5 · Voice-heavy teams that want a free tier and meeting plug-ins

Resemble Detect

by Resemble AI · Freemium · Free tier
7.0/10

Resemble AI makes voice-cloning software, and Resemble Detect is its tool for catching synthetic voices, video and images. Coming from a voice company, it is especially strong on audio formats, including the compressed codecs used by phone systems. It gives a verdict plus an explanation, and offers a Chrome extension and plug-ins for Zoom, Teams, Meet and Webex, with a free tier that needs no card.

Its accuracy claims (up to 99.5%, 250+ generators, 54 languages) are the company's own, and it says it ranks first on third-party benchmarks, which we could not verify independently.

Pick it if you want voice deepfake detection with a free way to start. Skip it if you need a vendor with independent published test results.

AI or Not

by AI or Not · Freemium · $5/month
6.4/10

AI or Not is the cheapest self-serve way to check deepfakes. The $5 Pro plan includes monthly credits usable on deepfake, voice, video, music, image and text detection, and every plan includes an API key.

Its evidence is thinner than the enterprise tools. In the 2024 University of Chicago test of AI-image detectors, Hive outperformed it, and we found no large independent test of its video or voice deepfake detection.

Pick it if you are a freelancer, student journalist or small team that needs occasional multi-format checks. Skip it if a wrong answer could cost money or reputation; use an enterprise tool plus human review.

What independent research shows

Deepfake-Eval-2024 (published 2025) is the most useful real-world test. Researchers gathered 45 hours of video, 56.5 hours of audio and 1,975 images of deepfakes that actually circulated in 2024, from 88 websites in 52 languages. Findings:

Media Drop in open-source detector performance (AUC) vs older benchmarks
Video about 50%
Audio about 48%
Images about 45%

Commercial detectors and models retrained on the new data did better, but still fell short of trained forensic analysts. The takeaway: vendor accuracy figures measured on older public datasets can badly overstate real-world performance.

Protect yourself from deepfake scams

Detection tools help, but simple habits stop most scams:

  1. Agree a family or team code word for urgent money requests by phone.
  2. Call back on a known number if a "boss" or relative asks for money or passwords.
  3. Be suspicious of urgency. Deepfake scams rely on pressure to act before you think.
  4. In video calls, ask the person to turn their head fully sideways or pass a hand in front of their face; many real-time face swaps still glitch.

For AI-generated still images, see our ranking of AI image detectors.

Watermarks and provenance

Detectors guess. Provenance tools prove. Google adds its SynthID watermark to images, video and audio made with its AI, and many companies attach signed Content Credentials (C2PA) to files. When present, these give a much more certain answer than any detector, but they only cover content from participating tools and can be stripped. Read what is AI watermarking.

Expert tips
  1. Always test the original file where possible. Social-media compression removes the fine details detectors rely on.
  2. Use two detectors from different vendors on anything important. If they disagree, treat the result as unknown and escalate to a human expert.
  3. Businesses: add a call-back rule for any payment or password request made by voice or video, even if detection software is in place.
  4. Developers: start with Reality Defender's 50 free monthly scans or Resemble's free tier to test on your own data before signing an enterprise contract.
  5. Ask vendors for results on unseen generators and real-world data, not just public datasets. Deepfake-Eval-2024 shows why.

Jargon explained

Deepfake
A fake video, image or audio clip made with AI to look or sound like a real person.
Voice cloning
Using AI to copy someone's voice from a short sample so it can say anything.
Liveness check
A test that confirms a real, present human is on camera, not a recording or AI avatar.
AUC
A score from 0.5 (coin flip) to 1.0 (perfect) that researchers use to compare how well detectors separate real from fake.
Unseen generator
An AI tool the detector was not trained on. Detectors are usually much weaker against these.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best deepfake detector?

For organisations, Reality Defender covers the most media types and real-time use cases. For voice fraud in call centres, Pindrop Pulse has the strongest third-party evidence we found. For individuals, Hive's free Chrome extension is the easiest start.

Are deepfake detectors accurate?

Less than vendors claim. The Deepfake-Eval-2024 study found open-source detectors lost about half their accuracy on real 2024 deepfakes. Commercial tools did better but did not reach the level of human forensic analysts.

Is there a free deepfake detector?

Yes. Hive offers a free Chrome extension, Reality Defender has a free API tier of 50 audio or image scans a month, and Resemble Detect has a free tier. AI or Not gives free starter credits.

How can I tell if a voice call is a deepfake?

Hang up and call back on a number you already know. Use a pre-agreed code word with family. Businesses can deploy tools like Pindrop Pulse or Reality Defender RealCall that analyse calls in real time.

Can deepfake detectors be used as legal evidence?

They can support a case, but courts usually need a human expert to explain the findings. Tools like Sensity produce forensic reports designed for this, but a score alone is rarely enough.
