Best AI Comic Generators

An AI comic generator turns a script or idea into illustrated panels. The hard part is not drawing one good picture; it is keeping the same character looking the same across 20 panels and 10 pages, with speech bubbles that are readable and in the right place.

Two kinds of tool do this. Comic-specific apps (Anifusion, LlamaGen, ComicsMaker, Pixton) give you panel layouts, lettering and saved characters. General image models (Google's Nano Banana Pro in Gemini, OpenAI's gpt-image-2 in ChatGPT) draw beautiful panels and are now good at keeping a character consistent, but you assemble the page yourself. We ranked seven tools on consistency, comic tools, art quality, value, and rights and export.

Quick answer

Anifusion is the best AI comic generator for most creators in September 2026. It combines trainable characters (LoRA), 40+ art models, a panel-layout editor and manga-style lettering, and you can start free with 100 credits. Gemini (Nano Banana Pro) makes the best-looking, most consistent panels if you are happy to letter pages yourself. LlamaGen is best for fast, prompt-to-page comics from $14/month, and Pixton is the safe choice for classrooms.

#1 · Manga and comic creators who want one complete workspace

Anifusion

by Anifusion · Freemium · Free 100 credits; paid subscriptions
8.8/10

Anifusion is the most complete comic workspace we found. You can train a custom LoRA on a character so it stays recognisable page after page, choose from more than 40 models tuned for anime, manga and western styles, then arrange panels on an editable canvas with preset or custom grids. Its lettering tools handle speech bubbles, vertical Japanese-style text and effects, which most rivals skip.

New users get 100 free credits without a card, and paid credits roll over and never expire, which suits people who work in bursts. The model range leans heavily toward anime styles; realistic or painterly western looks are possible but less of a focus. Commercial rights depend on your plan, so check before selling a book.

Pick it if you want to make a real multi-page comic or manga in one tool. Skip it if you want photoreal or painterly art; Gemini does that better.

#2 · The best-looking panels for any art style

Gemini (Nano Banana Pro)

by Google · Freemium · Free; Google AI Pro $19.99/mo
8.2/10

Nano Banana Pro in the Gemini app is the strongest general image model for comics right now. Give it a character sheet and it keeps the face and outfit remarkably stable across new scenes, and it can render short speech-bubble text cleanly inside a panel. It handles almost any style, from ligne claire to watercolour children's books, at up to 4K.

What it lacks is a comic workflow. There is no page editor, no saved character library and no lettering tools, so you generate panels one by one and assemble them in Canva, Clip Studio Paint or similar. Every image carries a SynthID watermark, which is worth knowing if you publish on platforms that label AI art.

Pick it if you care most about art quality and can assemble pages yourself. Skip it if you want a one-stop comic app.

#3 · Turning a prompt into a full comic page fast

LlamaGen

by LlamaGen.ai · Paid · $14/mo
8.0/10

LlamaGen is the fastest way from idea to a whole comic. Write a story prompt and it plans and draws up to 20 panels on the $14 Standard plan, or 64 on Unlimited, with layout and dialogue included. The $24 Pro plan adds character consistency and can turn a comic into a short animated video.

Art quality is good rather than great, and fine control over individual panels is weaker than in Anifusion. Note that basic plans only support a single custom character and that character consistency, the thing comics most need, starts on Pro. Companies earning over $500,000 a year also need Pro or higher for commercial use.

Pick it if you want many pages quickly for social media or classroom stories. Skip it if you want precise control over every panel.

#4 · Scripting and drawing short strips in one chat

ChatGPT Images

by OpenAI · Freemium · Free; Go $8/mo, Plus $20/mo
7.8/10

ChatGPT is a natural fit for short strips because it can write the script and draw it in the same conversation. OpenAI says gpt-image-2 can produce up to eight coherent images from one prompt with character continuity, and it can draw a four-panel strip with speech bubbles in a single image. Images 2.5 (September 2026) made generation faster and added a Sketch feature for turning rough drawings into art.

For anything longer than a few pages it gets awkward: there is no page editor, characters can drift between chats, and lettering in long dialogue can still slip. It is best for webcomic strips, storyboards and pitches.

Pick it if you want a quick comic strip, script included. Skip it if you are making a graphic novel.

#5 · Teachers and students

Pixton

by Pixton · Paid · 30-day trial; teacher and school quotes
7.6/10

Pixton is not a generative art tool in the same sense as the others. Students build characters from a posable avatar system, so the same character always looks the same, then drop them into panels with backgrounds and speech bubbles. It publishes a page on its use of AI and wraps everything in school-friendly privacy: GDPR compliance, a data-processing addendum and a parental-consent letter.

That makes it the safest choice for a classroom, but the art style is fixed and cartoony, and pricing for schools is quote-based.

Pick it if you are a teacher who needs a safe, curriculum-friendly comic tool. Skip it if you want AI-generated art in your own style.

#6 · Beginners who want guided comic creation

ComicsMaker.ai

by ComicsMaker · Paid · Credit plans (see site)
7.5/10

ComicsMaker.ai is a straightforward comic builder: describe your characters and story, and it generates consistent characters across multi-panel strips that you can export in several formats, with commercial rights on its plans. It suits beginners who want more structure than a chat-based image model but less complexity than Anifusion.

We found less public detail on its models, prices and track record than for the tools above, so test it on a short strip before paying for a long project.

Pick it if you want a simple, guided comic maker. Skip it if you need proven, fine-grained control.

#7 · Free experiments and self-hosting

AI Comic Factory

by Hugging Face community (jbilcke-hf) · Open source · Free
7.1/10

AI Comic Factory is a free, open-source demo that writes a short story with a language model and draws it as a comic page with Stable Diffusion XL. It was one of the most popular apps on Hugging Face, and because the code is Apache-2.0 you can self-host it and swap in other providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Groq for the story and Replicate for images.

Its age shows. The default SDXL models struggle to keep characters consistent, and the GitHub repository was archived in October 2025, so it will not get new features. It is fun for trying ideas and a useful base for developers.

Pick it if you want something free or want to build your own comic app. Skip it if you need consistent characters for a real project.

How AI keeps characters consistent

There are three main approaches:

Method How it works Used by
LoRA training A small add-on model learns one character from 10–30 images Anifusion
Reference images You attach a character sheet to each prompt Gemini, ChatGPT, LlamaGen
Avatar builder Characters are built from fixed parts, not generated Pixton

LoRA gives the most reliable results for long projects. Reference images are faster and now very good with Nano Banana Pro and gpt-image-2, but you must attach the sheet every time.

Cost of a 24-page comic

A 24-page comic with five panels a page is 120 panels. Expect to generate three to four attempts per keeper, so budget for roughly 400–500 images.

  • LlamaGen Pro ($24/month, 45,000 credits) is designed for this volume.
  • Anifusion costs 5–100 credits per image depending on the model, so cheap anime models go much further than premium ones.
  • Gemini API at about $0.134 per Nano Banana Pro image would cost roughly $55–$70 for 400–500 images.

Figures are estimates from list prices as of 23 September 2026.

How to choose

  • Serious manga or comic project: Anifusion.
  • Best art, will assemble pages yourself: Gemini, then letter in Canva or Clip Studio Paint.
  • Lots of pages fast: LlamaGen.
  • Short strips with script: ChatGPT.
  • Classroom: Pixton.
  • Free or developer project: AI Comic Factory.
Expert tips
  1. Make a character sheet first: one image showing the character from the front, side and back with their outfit. Attach it to every panel prompt in Gemini or ChatGPT to keep them consistent.
  2. Leave room for speech bubbles. Add "empty space at the top of the frame for dialogue" to prompts, then letter in an editor instead of asking the AI to draw long text.
  3. In Anifusion, pick a cheaper anime model while you draft layouts and switch to a premium model only for final panels. Credits range from 5 to 100 per image.
  4. Publishing on Amazon KDP? Tick the AI-generated disclosure for any AI images. Keep your scripts and layout files as proof of your own creative work.
  5. Write the whole script before generating anything. Knowing each panel's shot (close-up, wide, over-the-shoulder) saves more credits than any other habit.

Jargon explained

LoRA
A small add-on trained on a few images so an AI model can draw one specific character or style reliably.
Character sheet
A reference image showing a character from several angles, used to keep them looking the same across panels.
Lettering
Adding speech bubbles, captions and sound effects to comic panels.
Webtoon
A comic format designed for phones, read by scrolling down one long vertical strip.
SynthID
Google's invisible watermark that marks images made by its AI models.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI comic generator in 2026?

Anifusion for most creators, thanks to trainable characters, 40+ models and a real page editor. Gemini's Nano Banana Pro gives the best art if you assemble pages yourself.

Is there a free AI comic generator?

Yes. AI Comic Factory is free and open source. Anifusion gives 100 free credits, and Gemini and ChatGPT can draw comic panels on their free tiers within daily limits.

How do I keep characters consistent in an AI comic?

Use a tool with LoRA training (Anifusion) or attach the same character sheet to every prompt in Gemini or ChatGPT. Describe clothing and hair identically each time.

Can I sell a comic made with AI?

Usually yes, if your plan allows commercial use, but the AI images themselves may not be protected by copyright in the US. Amazon KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated images.

Which AI comic tool is best for students?

Pixton, which is designed for K-12 schools with GDPR compliance and parental-consent materials. LlamaGen also sells teacher licences at $13.99/month.
