Claude is the best ChatGPT alternative for most people who pay. It costs the same $20 a month, writes better long-form text and includes the Claude Code agent. The best alternative for each need:
Cheaper premium plan from Europe:Mistral Vibe, $14.99 a month
ChatGPT still ranks #1 in our best AI chatbots list for sheer breadth, so switch because another tool fits your main job better, not because ChatGPT is weak.
Why people look for ChatGPT alternatives
Ads on the free and Go plans
OpenAI said in January 2026 that it would test ads for free and Go users in the US, and the pricing page says Go may include ads. Only Plus and above are promised ad-free, which pushes the ad-free entry price to $20 a month.
Limits you cannot see
OpenAI labels most allowances Limited, Expanded or Maximum rather than giving numbers. When you outgrow Plus, the next step is Pro at $100, five times the price, or pay-as-you-go credits.
Training on your chats by default
On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, OpenAI's pricing page says content is used to train its models unless you opt out. Business and Enterprise do not train on your data by default, but cost more per person.
Another tool does your main job better
Writers and developers often prefer Claude's style and coding agent. Researchers want Perplexity's citations. People who live in Gmail or Word get more from Gemini or Copilot, which work inside those apps.
Too many models to keep track of
The pricing page lists GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, three GPT-5.6 models, GPT-5 Thinking Mini and legacy models, with different access on each plan. Answers can change when OpenAI swaps the default.

Most people who want one AI app that does everything
by Anthropic · from $17/month billed yearly (Pro); $20 monthly · free plan
8.8/10
Claude is the closest like-for-like swap for ChatGPT Plus. Pro costs the same $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly, and includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, plus Research and access to Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1. It ranks #2 in our best AI chatbots list, and we rate its answer quality the highest of any chatbot we tested. Replies read like a careful editor wrote them, which suits long reports, edits and analysis. The trade-offs: there is no built-in image or video generator, and usage runs on a five-hour allowance that heavy users will hit. See ChatGPT vs Claude for a full head-to-head.
Versus ChatGPT:Stronger writing and coding at the same price, but no image generation.
by Google · from $4.99/month (Google AI Plus, US) · free plan
8.8/10
Gemini is the best alternative if you already live in Google's apps. Its free plan includes Gemini 3.6 Flash, Deep Research, image generation, Canvas and Gemini Live voice chat. Paid plans bundle Google storage: AI Plus is $4.99 a month with 400 GB, and AI Pro is $19.99 with 5 TB, Gemini 3.8 Flash and a 1-million-token context window. If you would pay for extra Google storage anyway, AI Pro is better value than ChatGPT Plus. The catch is privacy: Google says a subset of chats is read by human reviewers unless you turn off Keep Activity. Compare them in ChatGPT vs Gemini.
Versus ChatGPT:Cheaper entry plan and bundled storage, but more of your data goes to Google by default.
by Perplexity AI · from $17/month billed yearly (Pro) · free plan
8.1/10
Perplexity is built for questions where a wrong answer costs you. Every reply shows numbered sources, so you can open the page a claim came from. Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly and lets you choose which model answers; Perplexity's plan page lists GPT-6 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Grok 4.7 among them. Pro also adds deep research and Perplexity Computer, an agent that builds documents and small apps. It ranks #4 in our chatbot ranking. It is weaker than ChatGPT at long creative writing and memory, so many people keep it as a research tab beside a main assistant. See Perplexity vs ChatGPT.
Versus ChatGPT:Citations on every answer and a choice of models, but a weaker all-round assistant.
by Microsoft · from $9.99/month (Microsoft 365 Personal) · free plan
7.8/10
Copilot is the sensible swap if you already pay for Office. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and pairs Copilot chat, with higher usage than the free version, with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and cloud storage. Premium at $19.99 a month adds what Microsoft calls extensive Copilot usage plus agent features for research and analysis. A free version of Copilot is built into Windows and Edge. Two things to know: on the Family plan the AI features work only for the subscription owner, and Copilot has fewer standalone tools than ChatGPT. See Copilot vs ChatGPT vs Gemini.
Versus ChatGPT:Bundles Office apps and storage for less than Plus, but has fewer AI tools.
by Meta · from Free (Meta One Core at $7.99/month adds more image and video creation) · free plan
8.0/10
Meta AI is the easiest free swap because it already sits inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, so there is nothing new to install. Meta says everyday use stays free. The Meta One plans it launched in September 2026, Core at $7.99 a month and Premium at $19.99, add more image and video creation rather than a smarter chatbot. It ranks #5 in our best AI chatbots list, one place above Copilot. What you give up compared with ChatGPT: coding agents, projects, custom GPTs and deep research at scale. Our ranking also marks it down on privacy, so keep work documents out of it.
Versus ChatGPT:Completely free and already in your messaging apps, but far fewer tools.
by DeepSeek · from Free (API from $0.30 per 1M input tokens at peak times) · free plan
7.6/10
DeepSeek is the pick if you want to pay nothing at all. The app is free and its App Store listing shows no in-app purchases, so there is no paid tier to upsell you. It handles maths, code and step-by-step reasoning well for a free tool. Developers get one of the cheapest APIs around: DeepSeek's Flash model costs $0.30 per million input tokens at peak times and half that off-peak. Know the limits before switching. There is no image generation, the feature set is thin, and DeepSeek's privacy policy says it stores personal data in China. Keep private documents out of it. See DeepSeek vs ChatGPT.
Versus ChatGPT:Free with no paid tier, but data is stored in China and features are basic.
by Mistral AI · from $14.99/month (Pro) · free plan
7.6/10
Mistral Vibe, the assistant formerly called Le Chat, has the cheapest premium plan from a major AI lab. Pro costs $14.99 a month, about $5 less than ChatGPT Plus, and verified students pay $5.99 for up to 12 months. One subscription covers the chat assistant and Mistral's coding agent in the terminal, IDE or web. Mistral's pricing page also lists monthly API credits on every plan: $10 on Free and $15 on Pro. The free plan already includes image generation and more than 100 connectors. Mistral is a French company, which appeals to buyers who want a non-US provider. Its models trail the leaders on hard reasoning, so complex analysis is weaker.
Versus ChatGPT:About $5 a month cheaper than Plus with a coding agent included, but weaker models.
The small chunk of text AI models read and write, roughly three-quarters of a word. API prices are quoted per million tokens.
Context window
How much text the model can keep in view at once. A bigger window lets you paste longer documents without the start being forgotten.
Reasoning model
A model that works through a problem step by step before answering. It is slower but better at maths, code and planning.
Credits
Prepaid units you can buy to keep using Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Office add-ins after your plan's allowance runs out.
Batch API
A way to send many API requests to run in the background at half price, with results returned later instead of instantly.
