Best Free AI Writing Tools

Every major AI writing tool has a free plan, but the limits differ a lot. Some cap you at a few requests a day. Others give you a strong model and quietly slow you down once you use it heavily. This ranking judges tools only on what you get for $0, not on their paid plans.

We compared 10 free plans using the vendors' own pricing and plan pages, checked in September 2026. Limits change often, so we note the exact caps where vendors publish them.

Quick answer

The best free AI writing tool is ChatGPT's free plan: it drafts, edits and researches well with no payment needed. Gemini is the best free choice for Google users, and Claude's free plan gives the most natural prose but runs out faster. For free grammar and polishing, use Grammarly Free or LanguageTool.

Expert reviews

#1 · Free all-purpose drafting and editing

ChatGPT

by OpenAI · Freemium · Free; Go $8/month
8.8/10

ChatGPT's free plan is the most useful free writing tool. You can draft an article, rewrite an email, get feedback on an essay and search the web in one place, with apps on every platform. When you hit the free cap, ChatGPT limits access to its stronger features until the cap resets rather than locking you out completely.

OpenAI does not publish exact free limits, so heavy users will notice slow-downs at unpredictable points. If you hit them often, the $8 Go tier is the cheapest upgrade among the big chatbots.

Pick it if you want one free tool that handles most writing jobs. Skip it if you need consistent, predictable limits for daily long-form work.

#2 · Google account holders

Gemini

by Google · Freemium · Free; Google AI Plus is the cheapest upgrade
8.7/10

Gemini's free plan is generous and easy to start: if you have a Google account, you already have access. It writes clear, accurate text and is especially good at summarising and restructuring notes or sources you paste in.

The main free-plan catch is that Gemini inside Google Docs and Gmail needs a paid Google AI plan. On the free plan you use the Gemini app or website and copy text across.

Pick it if you use Google services and want a free writer with relaxed limits. Skip it if you want the most natural-sounding prose; Claude's free plan is better for that.

#3 · The best-sounding free drafts

Claude

by Anthropic · Freemium · Free; Pro $20/month
8.4/10

Claude gives the most natural-sounding writing of any free plan. The free tier now includes web search, memory across chats and file creation, so it is a full writing tool, not a demo.

The downside is capacity. Free usage limits are tighter than ChatGPT's or Gemini's in practice, and pasting long documents uses them up quickly. Many writers use Claude for the draft that matters and another free tool for quick tasks.

Pick it if quality matters more than volume: a cover letter, an important email, a personal statement. Skip it if you need to write a lot every day without paying.

#4 · Free grammar and spelling in every app

Grammarly Free

by Superhuman (formerly Grammarly Inc.) · Freemium · Free; Pro $12/month billed annually
8.1/10

Grammarly Free is the best free safety net for everyday writing. Install the extension or desktop app and it checks spelling, grammar and punctuation almost everywhere you type, with no word caps on basic corrections.

The free plan also includes 100 AI prompts a month for rewrites and a basic version of the humanizer agent. The most useful clarity and tone rewrites are kept for Pro, and the app shows upgrade prompts often.

Pick it if you want mistakes caught in email, forms and documents at no cost. Skip it if you mainly need drafting; a chatbot's free plan does more.

#5 · Free AI chat for Windows and Edge users

Microsoft Copilot

by Microsoft · Freemium · Free; Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/month
8.0/10

The free Copilot app is built into Windows and Edge, so many people already have it. It drafts and rewrites competently and can search the web.

What you do not get free is Copilot inside Word, Outlook and PowerPoint. That needs a Microsoft 365 subscription, starting at $9.99 a month for Personal. On the free app you copy text between windows.

#6 · Making writing clearer and easier to read

Hemingway Editor

by Boondoggle Studio · Freemium · Free web editor; Hemingway Editor Plus paid (2-week free trial)
7.7/10

Hemingway is different from the other tools here. It does not write for you. It colour-codes your text to show long, hard-to-read sentences, passive voice, adverbs and complex words, and gives a reading-grade score.

The free web editor has no sign-up and no cap, which makes it the most generous free plan in this list. AI fixes, grammar checks and tone changes are in the paid Hemingway Editor Plus.

Pick it if you want to learn to write shorter, clearer sentences. Skip it if you want AI to draft or rewrite for you.

#7 · Free grammar checks in 30+ languages

LanguageTool

by LanguageTooler GmbH · Freemium · Free; Premium from about $4.99/month billed annually
7.6/10

LanguageTool is the best free grammar checker if you write in more than one language. It supports over 30 languages, including German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Portuguese, where Grammarly's grammar checking is weaker or absent.

The free plan checks up to 2,000 characters per text box (roughly 300–400 words) and allows 3 AI paraphrases a day. That suits emails and short documents. Long documents need Premium, which lifts the limit to 150,000 characters.

Pick it if you write in several languages or want a privacy-friendly European alternative to Grammarly. Skip it if you need to check long documents free.

#8 · Free paraphrasing, summarising and citations

QuillBot Free

by QuillBot (Learneo) · Freemium · Free; Premium $8.33/month billed annually
7.6/10

QuillBot's free plan gives you the widest set of small writing tools: a paraphraser, grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator, translator and AI detector. It has also added a free AI resume builder and an AI presentation maker. That breadth is why it is so popular with students.

The limits are tight. The free paraphraser handles up to 125 words at a time in only two modes, the humanizer is capped at 125 words with limited use, and the AI detector allows six scans a day. Premium removes most caps and adds more modes.

Pick it if you need quick paraphrases, summaries, citations or a simple resume for free. Skip it if you want to paraphrase long passages or draft from scratch.

#9 · A few quick sentence rewrites a day

Wordtune Free

7.0/10

Wordtune's free plan gives you 10 AI rewrites a day and unlimited spelling and grammar checks. Highlight a sentence and it offers casual, formal, shorter or longer versions.

Ten rewrites is enough to polish an important email but not a full document. Summaries are capped at 3 a month on free. Paid plans are cheap if you like it.

#10 · Trying an academic writing assistant free

Jenni AI

by Jenni AI · Freemium · Free; Plus $12/month
6.8/10

Jenni AI is an academic writing editor. It suggests the next sentence as you type, lets you upload PDFs of sources and formats citations. The free plan includes unlimited citations and 10 PDF uploads, which is useful on its own.

The AI limits on free are low: 10 autocompletes a day, 5 chat messages and 3 AI edits. That is enough to try it, not to write a paper.

Pick it if you want to test an academic-focused editor with built-in citations. Skip it if you need a free tool for regular drafting; a general chatbot gives far more.

What free plans usually leave out

Free plans follow a pattern. You get the basic tool, but:

  • The strongest model is limited or swapped for a smaller one after a cap.
  • Integrations such as Gemini in Docs or Copilot in Word are paid.
  • Long inputs are cut short (QuillBot's 125 words, LanguageTool's 2,000 characters).
  • Privacy controls on business plans, such as not training on your data by default, are often paid-only. Check each vendor's settings before pasting sensitive text.

The best free stack

You do not need to pay to write well with AI. A strong free combination is:

  1. ChatGPT or Gemini for drafting and research.
  2. Claude for the one or two pieces a day where tone matters most.
  3. Grammarly Free or LanguageTool running in the background to catch errors.
  4. Hemingway for a final readability check.

When you hit caps every day, that is the signal to pay for one tool, usually the chatbot you use most.

How we scored

We scored only the free plan of each tool, on four criteria: free-plan generosity (30%), output quality (30%), features available without paying (20%) and low friction (20%). Limits and prices come from each vendor's pricing page on 23 September 2026. Quality scores are editorial judgements. See how we rank.

Expert tips
  1. Rotate chatbots when you hit a cap: draft in ChatGPT, then move to Gemini or Claude rather than paying immediately.
  2. Start a new chat for each document. Long chats use up free allowances faster because the whole conversation is re-read each time.
  3. On QuillBot Free, paraphrase paragraph by paragraph to stay under the roughly 125-word limit, and reread each one for meaning changes.
  4. Turn off model training on your chats in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini settings before pasting personal writing.
  5. Use Hemingway's free web editor as the last step: aim for most sentences out of the yellow and red highlights.

Jargon explained

Freemium
A product with a free plan and paid upgrades that unlock more use or features.
Usage cap
A limit on how much you can use a tool in a set time, such as per day or per month.
Paraphraser
A tool that rewrites text in different words while trying to keep the same meaning.
Readability grade
A score estimating the school grade needed to understand a text easily. Lower is easier to read.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best completely free AI writing tool?

ChatGPT's free plan is the most capable overall. Hemingway's web editor is the most generous (no cap, no sign-up) but it does not generate text.

Is Grammarly free?

Yes. Grammarly Free checks spelling, grammar and punctuation without word caps and includes 100 AI prompts a month. Clarity, tone and full rewrite features need Pro.

Is QuillBot free?

Yes, with limits. The free paraphraser handles up to 125 words at a time in two modes, the summarizer takes up to 1,200 words, and the AI detector allows six 1,200-word scans a day. The citation generator and resume builder are free. Premium costs $99.95 a year and removes the paraphrase word limit.

Which free AI writes the most human-sounding text?

Claude's free plan produces the most natural prose in our assessment, but its free limits are tighter than ChatGPT's or Gemini's.

Are free AI writing tools safe for private documents?

Be careful. Free consumer plans may use your conversations to improve models unless you opt out in settings. Do not paste confidential work documents into any free tool without checking its data policy.

Which free tool is best for students?

ChatGPT or Gemini for explanations and feedback, QuillBot for citations and summaries, and Grammarly Free for proofreading. See best AI for essays for academic-integrity advice.
