Best AI Hairstyle Generators and Hair Colour Try-On

An AI hairstyle generator shows a new cut or colour on your own photo, so you can see a bob, a fringe or copper hair before anyone picks up scissors or dye. Some tools work live through your phone camera. Others edit a selfie with generative AI, which looks more realistic but takes a few seconds.

We ranked ten tools, from beauty apps and brand try-ons to general AI image editors. Because every one of them needs a clear photo of your face, privacy is a quarter of the score: how long the selfie is kept, whether it trains AI, and how many other companies see it. We also scored realism, style and colour range, free tier and value, and how easy it is to get a reference to show your stylist. Prices are US list prices as of 26 September 2026. Treat every result as a preview: your hair's texture, density and base colour will change the real outcome.

Quick answer

YouCam Makeup is the best AI hairstyle generator overall: 250+ preset cuts, a hair colour changer and a custom mode that copies a haircut from a reference photo, and Perfect Corp says cloud try-on photos are deleted once you finish. Gemini gives the most realistic edits free, if you turn off Keep Activity first. FaceApp has the best privacy record of the dedicated apps (selfies deleted within 24 to 48 hours), and L'Oréal Paris Virtual Try-On is the best free way to test a box-dye colour.

#1 · Browsing hundreds of cuts and colours on a selfie

YouCam Makeup

by Perfect Corp. · Freemium · Free; Premium from $5.99/month
8.1/10

YouCam Makeup from Perfect Corp is the most complete hairstyle try-on we reviewed. The app has 250+ preset cuts, from pixies and bobs to long waves and bangs, a hair colour changer with natural and bold shades, and a Custom Hair Try On mode: upload a photo of a haircut you like and it applies that style to you, with the option to keep your natural colour. A web version, the YouCam AI Hairstyle Generator, has 200+ styles in separate women's and men's collections and gives new accounts two free previews.

Perfect Corp's privacy policy (effective June 2026) says photos uploaded for cloud try-on are permanently deleted once you have finished using the feature, and that for most features it does not store facial photos or face measurements. Its generative AI features can send data to a long list of outside model providers, and the iPhone app's privacy label lists location, identifiers and usage data used to track you across other apps.

Pick it if you want the widest range of cuts in one app. Skip it if ad tracking bothers you; FaceApp tracks less.

#2 · Realistic edits of any cut or colour you can describe, free

Gemini (Nano Banana)

by Google · Freemium · Free; Google AI Plus $4.99/mo
8.0/10

Gemini is not a hairstyle app, but Google's Nano Banana image models are among the best at editing a photo while keeping the face the same, which is exactly what a hair preview needs. Upload a well-lit selfie and ask for "a chin-length French bob with curtain bangs in warm chestnut, keep my face and background unchanged". You can also upload a photo of a haircut you like and ask Gemini to copy it. Generative edits like this usually look more like a real photo than preset filters, and the free tier covers a few tries.

The trade-offs are workflow and privacy. There are no presets, no live camera and no side-by-side grid, so you describe each style yourself. With Keep Activity on (the default), Google keeps your chats, including the selfie, until they auto-delete after 18 months, and a sample is read by human reviewers and kept for up to three years. Turn Keep Activity off first and Google says new chats are kept for 72 hours.

Pick it if you know roughly what you want and value realism. Skip it if you want to flick through hundreds of styles live.

#3 · Quick, private hair colour and style changes on a selfie

FaceApp

by FaceApp Technology Limited · Freemium · Free; FaceApp PRO from $10
7.8/10

FaceApp is the most privacy-friendly dedicated app here. Its policy says photos are processed on Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services, stay in the cloud for 24 to 48 hours after your last edit, and are not used for anything except providing the editing features. The iPhone app's privacy label lists no data used to track you across other apps. FaceApp faced questions in 2019 because it was created by a Russian company; its privacy policy now names FaceApp Technology Limited in Cyprus as the controller.

For hair, FaceApp changes colour, swaps in a few hairstyles, adds volume and adds or removes beards, all on a single selfie in seconds. FaceApp describes its filters as highly photorealistic. The range is narrower than YouCam's, though: you get a set of looks rather than hundreds of named cuts or a reference-photo mode, and many filters need FaceApp PRO, sold in the app from $10 to $100.

With 4.7 stars from about 1.8 million US App Store ratings, it is also the most reviewed app on this list.

Pick it if privacy comes first and you want fast, realistic changes. Skip it if you want to browse a large catalogue of named cuts.

#4 · Getting style advice and edits in one conversation

ChatGPT Images

by OpenAI · Freemium · Free; Go $8/mo, Plus $20/mo
7.7/10

ChatGPT combines a hairstyle generator with a hairdresser you can question. Upload a selfie and ask which cuts might suit your face and lifestyle, then ask it to show the three you like best, then refine one ("shorter at the back", "softer copper"). It follows detailed instructions well, but like any generative edit it can subtly change your face, so compare with your original.

Privacy needs a quick setting change. Unless you switch off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls, OpenAI can use your chats to train its models. Deleted chats are removed within 30 days, but OpenAI's help centre notes that deleting a chat does not delete files saved separately in your Library. A Temporary Chat avoids both problems: OpenAI says it is never used for training and is deleted within 30 days.

The free plan has a small image allowance; Go costs $8 a month and Plus $20. There are no presets or live camera.

Pick it if you want ideas and previews in the same place. Skip it if you want to scroll through a catalogue of styles.

#5 · Testing a box-dye colour before you buy

L'Oréal Paris Virtual Try-On

by L'Oréal · Free · Free
7.4/10

If you only want to change colour, L'Oréal Paris's free Virtual Try-On is the easiest place to start. Open it in a browser, use the live camera or upload a selfie, pick a colour family and flick through more than 200 shades from L'Oréal's home hair colour ranges, including Excellence, Féria, Superior Preference and Colorista. It detects your current hair colour first, which matters because the same dye looks different on dark and light hair.

L'Oréal says live and selfie images are never stored, which is the strongest privacy statement on this list, and there is no account or payment. It also claims its colour renderings are 88% accurate on average; we could not check that figure.

The limits are obvious: it changes colour only, not the cut, and only shows L'Oréal products. Use it to narrow down a shade, then take the product name to the shop or a photo to your colourist.

Pick it if you are choosing a hair colour, especially a box dye. Skip it if you want to try new cuts; use YouCam Makeup or Gemini.

#6 · Browsing trend presets and typing custom styles on the web

Fotor AI Hairstyle Changer

by Fotor · Freemium · Free (limited credits)
7.3/10

Fotor's AI Hairstyle Changer is a friendly web tool with lots of choice. You can pick trend presets for women and men (curtain bangs, blunt bobs, modern mullets, textured crops) or type your own description, such as "French bob with curtain bangs in honey blonde". It also tries colours from blonde to pastel and, Fotor says, suggests shades based on your skin's undertone.

Privacy is mixed. The tool page says photos are processed in real time and deleted from Fotor's servers within an hour of your session. But Fotor's main privacy policy (updated May 2026) says inputs to its AI generation tools stay on its US servers until you delete them, can be sent to outside model providers, and, for free users spending gift credits without a subscription, are made public in the Fotor community by default. We cannot tell which rule applies to this tool, so check your sharing settings.

Pick it if you like presets plus free-text prompts in a browser. Skip it if you want a single, clear promise about your selfie.

#7 · People who already edit photos in Picsart

Picsart

by PicsArt, Inc. · Freemium · Free; Pro $15/month
6.8/10

Picsart has three ways to change your hair. Retouch Hairstyles, in the mobile app, restyles hair based on your existing colour and texture, from sleek to voluminous curls, curtain bangs and waves. The Hair Color Changer recolours hair in one tap, and AI Replace lets you brush over your hair and type what you want instead. Picsart says the tool adapts to your hair so results do not look cartoonish, and you can finish the photo in the same editor. Read more in our Picsart review.

The free plan includes 5 AI credits a week, enough for a few tries; Pro costs $15 a month or $126 a year on the website.

Privacy is vague rather than bad. Picsart's policy says it scans face geometry in images you upload to apply effects, and that some information can be kept for up to three years after you close your account, but it gives no specific retention period for selfies and does not say clearly whether uploads help train its AI. Picsart's own blog says short hairstyles were still to come when the feature launched.

Pick it if you already use Picsart and want hair changes alongside other edits. Skip it if you want the widest choice of cuts; YouCam Makeup has more.

#8 · A one-off set of photos in 30 different hairstyles

HairStyle AI

by Postcrafts PTE LTD (HeadshotPro) · Paid · $9 one-time
6.5/10

HairStyle AI takes a different approach. Instead of editing one photo live, you upload a set of selfies, pay $9 once, and about an hour later receive 120 HD photos of yourself in 30 hairstyles and four poses. It comes from the team behind HeadshotPro, one of the leaders in our AI headshot ranking, and uses the same idea: an AI model learns your face from several photos, then renders new portraits.

That gives realistic, varied pictures without a subscription, which is good value for a single decision. But you cannot choose the 30 styles or try colours on demand, and you wait rather than see results instantly.

Privacy documentation is thin for a service that trains on your face. Its privacy policy does not mention photos, face data or AI training at all. It does say personal data is deleted within 14 days after you ask or close your account.

Pick it if you want a batch of realistic photos for $9. Skip it if you want to choose specific cuts or test colours live.

#9 · Hairstyles plus colour analysis in one phone app

HairApp: AI Hairstyle Try On

by XLABS Dijital Hizmetler · Freemium · Free download; in-app purchases $7.99–$39.99
6.2/10

HairApp packs a hairstyle try-on, a hair colour changer and an AI colour analysis into one phone app, plus beard, makeup and nail filters. You snap a selfie and flick through styles; the colour analysis suggests which shades suit your colouring. It has 4.2 stars from about 8,400 US App Store ratings.

The developer's privacy policy, a general one covering several XLABS apps, contradicts itself. It says images are deleted after processing and that face data and photos are not kept beyond 24 hours, but also that facial data is purged one month after it is created, and that anonymised data may occasionally be kept. The App Store privacy label adds that identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps, and lists photos as data linked to you.

Prices are unclear until you are in the app: subscriptions and coin packs run from $7.99 to $39.99.

Pick it if you want colour analysis and hairstyles together. Skip it if you want a clear, single deletion rule; FaceApp and YouCam are clearer.

#10 · Trying bald, long or bearded looks for fun

Hair AI: Hairstyle Filter, Cut

by Spark Dynamics · Freemium · Free download; weekly plans $9.99–$29.99
6.1/10

Hair AI from Spark Dynamics offers hairstyle filters, colour changes, bald and long-hair effects and beard styles on a selfie. It has 4.4 stars from about 5,500 US App Store ratings. Its store listing leans on fun effects, such as bald and long-hair looks, more than on planning a real cut.

Spark Dynamics' privacy policy is reasonably clear: face data is deleted from its servers after each request (a process it says can take up to four days), and personal data is not used to train separate AI models. But your selfie may pass through a long list of outside AI providers to make the images: Google, OpenAI, Replicate, fal.ai, Higgsfield, ByteDance and Kling AI.

The real problem is price. The US App Store lists weekly plans at $9.99, $12.99, $19.99 and $29.99. At $29.99 a week, a forgotten trial could cost more than $1,500 a year. Yearly plans ($49.99 or $69.99) are far cheaper if you must subscribe.

Pick it if you want silly bald or long-hair photos and will cancel quickly. Skip it if you are planning a real haircut; free tools do it better.

Live try-on, AI edits or photo sets: which to use

There are three kinds of hairstyle tool, and they suit different jobs.

  • Live try-on (augmented reality): the app tracks your head through the camera and lays a hairstyle or colour over it in real time. L'Oréal's Virtual Try-On works this way. It is fast and lets you turn your head, but edges and fine strands can look painted on.
  • Generative edits: an AI model redraws your hair in a still photo. Gemini, ChatGPT, FaceApp, Fotor, Picsart and YouCam's AI hairstyle tools work this way. Results look more like a real photo, but the AI can subtly change your face or background, so compare with the original.
  • Trained photo sets: HairStyle AI learns your face from several selfies and renders a batch of new portraits. Realistic, but slow and you do not choose each style.

Use presets or live try-on to narrow down ideas quickly, then a generative edit to see one or two finalists as realistically as possible.

Where your selfie goes: privacy compared

We read each policy on 26 September 2026. Retention and training statements are vendor claims.

How to get a salon-ready reference

  1. Use a good selfie. Face the camera in daylight, hair pulled back from your face if you are trying shorter styles, no filter.
  2. Try widely, then pick three. Use YouCam Makeup or Fotor presets to explore, and save the three you like most.
  3. Make one realistic version. Upload your favourite to Gemini or ChatGPT and ask for the same cut with your own face and background kept unchanged.
  4. Bring real photos too. Stylists work best from photos of real people with hair like yours (thickness, curl, colour). An AI preview shows shape and colour, not how your hair will behave.
  5. Ask about upkeep. A fringe needs trims every few weeks; a big colour change may need several sessions. The app cannot tell you that; your stylist can.

How we scored

Realism and photo privacy carry 25% each, style and colour range 20%, and free tier and value and ease of use 15% each. We read each tool's product page, pricing, privacy policy and US App Store listing on 26 September 2026, and cross-checked the general image editors against our AI photo editor and face swap rankings. The overall score is the weighted average, rounded to one decimal. No vendor paid for placement.

Expert tips
  1. Before your first upload, change the privacy setting: turn off Keep Activity in Gemini or start a Temporary Chat in ChatGPT. For apps, prefer ones with a written deletion window of a day or two, such as FaceApp.
  2. Tie long hair back and use a plain background when trying short cuts. Loose hair confuses the AI and makes bobs and pixies look pasted on.
  3. Ask generative tools to "keep my face, skin and background unchanged" and compare with your original. If your face has changed, the hair preview is less trustworthy too.
  4. Save your favourite preview next to a photo of a real person with similar hair type, and show both to your stylist.
  5. If an app asks for a weekly subscription, close it and use a free option; weekly plans in this category run up to $29.99.

Jargon explained

Augmented reality (AR)
Technology that adds digital effects, like a new hair colour, to your live camera view in real time.
Generative edit
An AI model redraws part of a photo from scratch, such as your hair, instead of overlaying a filter.
Retention period
How long a company keeps your uploaded photos on its servers before deleting them.
Undertone
The subtle warm, cool or neutral colour beneath your skin's surface, which affects which hair colours flatter you.
Cross-app tracking
When an app shares identifiers or usage data so advertisers can follow your activity across other companies' apps and websites.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI hairstyle generator?

Gemini gives the most realistic free edits if you describe the cut you want; turn off Keep Activity first. YouCam Makeup has free preset styles in its app, and L'Oréal Paris Virtual Try-On is completely free for testing hair colours.

Can AI tell which haircut suits my face shape?

Some apps offer face-shape or colour analysis, and ChatGPT can suggest cuts from a selfie. Treat these as starting ideas. Face shape is only one factor; your hair's thickness, curl, cowlicks and how much styling time you have matter as much. A good stylist will weigh all of them.

Is it safe to upload a selfie to a hairstyle app?

It can be, if you choose carefully. FaceApp deletes cloud copies within 24 to 48 hours, L'Oréal says it never stores images, and Perfect Corp says YouCam cloud try-on photos are deleted after use. Avoid apps with contradictory or missing policies, and check whether results are public on free plans.

Will the hair colour look the same in real life?

Not exactly. A preview cannot show how your hair will take dye. Going several shades lighter usually needs lightening first, and the result depends on your natural colour and any previous colour. Use the preview to choose a direction, then ask a colourist.

Can I try hair colours live on camera?

Yes. L'Oréal Paris Virtual Try-On works with your live camera as well as a selfie. The other tools here, including YouCam's AI hairstyle tools, Gemini, ChatGPT, FaceApp and HairStyle AI, work on photos.

Do these tools work for men's haircuts and beards?

Yes. YouCam's web tool has a separate men's collection, Fotor has men's presets such as textured crops and fades, and FaceApp, HairApp and Hair AI add beard styles. In Gemini or ChatGPT, name the cut, for example "mid skin fade with a textured quiff".
