GPTZero Pricing (2026): Free, Premium and Professional

Quick answer

GPTZero has a free plan and two paid plans for individuals. Free scans 10,000 words a month. Premium costs $23.99 a month, or $12.99 a month billed yearly ($155.88), and is the plan most teachers and writers need: 300,000 words, plagiarism checks and detection of humanized AI text. Professional costs $45.99 a month, or $24.99 billed yearly ($299.88), and adds 500,000 words, bigger scans and Canvas and Google Classroom integration.

Teams buy Professional seats for each member, schools can ask for a contract, and developers pay separately for the API, from $45 a month for 300,000 words. These are US prices from GPTZero's pricing page in September 2026; GPTZero shows prices in local currency in other countries.

Prices checked 25 September 2026 on GPTZero's official pricing page. Prices are in US dollars unless stated and can change at any time.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, GPTZero is free for up to 10,000 words a month. That is enough for about five 2,000-word essays. Each scan can hold up to 10,000 characters, roughly 1,500 words of English, so long papers need splitting or a paid plan.

The free plan gives the core detector: an overall verdict (human, AI or mixed), a confidence level and highlighted sentences, plus one Advanced Scan and a grammar check. It does not include the plagiarism checker, downloadable reports or detection of text run through paraphrasers and humanizers. Those need Premium.

Hidden costs and catches
  • Monthly billing costs much more. Premium is $23.99 a month but $12.99 billed yearly; over a year that is $287.88 versus $155.88. Professional is $551.88 monthly versus $299.88 yearly.
  • Humanizer detection is paid. The free plan does not look for AI text that was paraphrased or run through a bypasser, which is exactly the text that most often slips past detectors.
  • LMS integration needs Professional. Canvas and Google Classroom integration, team roles and shared billing are only on Professional or a school plan.
  • Per-scan limits. Even paid plans cap each scan at 50,000 characters (Premium) or 150,000 (Professional), so very long theses may need several scans.
  • API is billed separately. A Premium or Professional plan does not cover API use, and API overage is charged per word past your tier.
  • Local pricing. Prices change by country; check the amount at checkout if you are outside the US.

The free plan is worth using, and Premium billed yearly is fair value for regular users. At $12.99 a month it costs less than most rivals' comparable plans and adds plagiarism checks, bypasser detection and 300,000 words.

  • Students and occasional users: stay on Free. 10,000 words a month is plenty for checking your own essays.
  • Teachers: Premium billed yearly covers about 300 essays of 1,000 words a month. Only move to Professional if you need Canvas or Google Classroom integration.
  • Avoid monthly billing unless you need it for one term: it costs about 85% more over a year than paying yearly.

If catching disguised AI text matters most, compare Pangram first; it tested better in independent research and costs $20 a month. See all options on our GPTZero alternatives page.

GPTZero API pricing

The API lets developers send text to GPTZero from their own apps. It is billed monthly by word allowance, separately from dashboard plans:

Monthly words Price per month
300,000 $45
1 million $135
2 million $250
5 million $550
10 million $1,000
20 million $1,850

US prices from GPTZero's plan data, captured 21 September 2026. Each request can hold up to 150,000 characters. GPTZero's help centre says you can go up to 1 million words over your tier, charged as overage, before you are asked to upgrade, and that you can try the API free in its docs for a limited number of calls.

Team, school and district plans

Teams buy Professional seats for each member and share credits and billing in one workspace. GPTZero's help centre says a school or department can buy multiple seats by card through its teams page, or sign a contract through sales. Site-wide and district prices are not published.

If your school already pays for Turnitin, check whether its AI add-on is licensed before buying GPTZero seats, and read our AI detectors for teachers ranking to compare classroom features.

Money-saving tips from our editors
  1. Pay yearly if you will use GPTZero for more than about seven months: Premium yearly ($155.88) costs less than seven months of monthly billing ($167.93).
  2. Need GPTZero for one exam season only? Buy a monthly plan and use GPTZero's pause option (one to three months) rather than cancelling and re-subscribing.
  3. Split long documents only at natural breaks. The free plan's 10,000-character scan limit can cut a paper mid-argument and weaken the result.
  4. Teachers should try the free plan and Chrome extension for a few weeks before paying, and check which Writing Report features each plan includes.
  5. Cancel in your subscription settings before the renewal date and keep the confirmation email, since billing complaints are common in public reviews.

Jargon explained

False positive
When a detector wrongly says human writing was produced by AI.

Writing replay
A playback of how a document was typed, edited and pasted, used as evidence of who wrote it.
Confidence category
GPTZero's label for how sure it is about a verdict: high, moderate or uncertain.
