Turnitin Pricing (2026): Institution Costs, No Student Plan
Turnitin does not sell to individuals, so there is no student plan, free plan or monthly price you can pay. Schools, universities and organisations buy an institutional licence, and Turnitin's own FAQ says prices vary by institution type, number of users and features, so you must ask its sales team for a quote.
Published purchasing records give a rough idea. CalMatters and The Markup found US colleges paying between $1.79 and $6.50 per student a year for the same product in 2021–22, and the California State University system paying $2.71 per student in 2025 for plagiarism checking. AI writing detection costs extra through the Turnitin Originality add-on.
If you are a student, you already have access at no cost if your school licenses it, but only through your course. If you are a researcher, the one product you can buy yourself is iThenticate, from $125 per manuscript.
Prices checked 25 September 2026 on Turnitin's official pricing page. Prices are in US dollars unless stated and can change at any time.

Is there a free plan?
There is no free Turnitin plan and no paid plan for individuals. Turnitin's FAQ says students normally reach it through their institution or instructor, usually inside the course page of a learning platform such as Canvas or Moodle.
What that means in practice:
- Students can: submit work to assignments their instructor sets up, see their similarity report if the instructor allows it, and use Draft Coach in Google Docs or Word online if the school has turned it on.
- Students cannot: buy a Turnitin account, run a standalone check, or see the AI writing report unless an instructor shares a PDF copy.
- Teachers cannot buy a personal licence either. Gradescope Basic, Turnitin's grading tool, is free for instructors, but it does not check for plagiarism or AI.
What you will actually pay
Worked examples using the published prices above.
| Scenario | Cost | How we got there |
|---|---|---|
| Student at a school that licenses Turnitin | $0 to you | The institution pays. Access is only through assignments your instructor creates. |
| College of 10,000 students, plagiarism checking only, at Cal State's 2025 rate | About $27,100 a year | 10,000 × $2.71 = $27,100. Real quotes vary by institution; this uses one published contract rate. |
| Same college adding AI detection at Cal State's negotiated rate | About $31,200 a year | 10,000 × $3.12 = $31,200, the discounted per-student total after a system-wide deal. The non-discounted offer was $3.19 (10,000 × $3.19 = $31,900). |
| PhD student checking one thesis of 60,000 words | $300 | Over 25,000 words needs iThenticate's Multiple credit ($300), which covers one manuscript up to 75,000 words. No AI detection included. |
Turnitin pricing compared with rivals
| Tool | Paid plans from | Free plan | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turnitin | Custom (institutional quote) | No. Students use it at no cost through their school | The tool on this page |
| GPTZero | $12.99/month billed yearly ($155.88); $23.99 monthly | Yes: 10,000 words a month of AI detection | Anyone can buy it. Premium adds plagiarism checks; Professional adds LMS integration. |
| Scribbr Plagiarism Checker | $19.95 per check (up to 7,499 words) | Free check shows whether matches exist | Pay per document, no subscription. Scribbr says it never adds your paper to a database. |
| Originality.ai | $12.95/month billed yearly; $14.95 monthly | Yes: 3 AI scans a day up to 2,000 words each | 2,000 credits a month; 1 credit covers 100 words per check type. |
| Copyleaks | $13.99/month billed yearly; $16.99 monthly | No full free plan | Personal plan: 100 credits a month, about 25,000 words. Education plans by quote. |
| Grammarly | $12/month billed yearly (Pro); $30 monthly | Yes: basic plagiarism scan and free AI detector | Full plagiarism report with sources needs Pro. |
| Pangram | $20/month (Individual); $180 billed yearly | Yes: 2,000 words a day | Led the 2025 University of Chicago detector study. Plagiarism checks on paid plans. |
For institutions, usually yes for plagiarism checking, and it depends for AI detection. Turnitin's archive of past student papers is the one thing rivals cannot copy, and at the published rates of roughly $2 to $3 per student a year it is modest next to what universities spend on other software. The AI add-on is harder to justify: it costs extra, independent evidence is thin, and several universities have paid for it and then switched it off.
- Negotiate as a group. The Markup's records show system-wide and consortium deals cut per-student prices.
- Pilot the AI add-on with a few departments before licensing it campus-wide, and write a policy on how scores may be used.
- For individuals, Turnitin is not an option. Students should use a checker that does not store drafts, such as Scribbr, and researchers can buy iThenticate.

What institutions actually pay
Turnitin does not publish prices, but public-records requests by CalMatters and The Markup, reported in June 2025, show real contracts:
| Institution | Per student per year | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CUNY system | $1.79 | 2021–22, cheapest found |
| UC Berkeley | $2.11 | 2021–22; 10-year, $1.2 million contract |
| Cal State Long Beach | $3.03 | 2021–22 |
| Antelope Valley College | $3.03 | 2021–22 |
| UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education | $6.50 | 2021–22 |
| Cal State system (plagiarism only) | $2.59 (2024), $2.71 (2025) | Contract signed March 2024 |
| Cal State campuses with AI detection | $3.12 | After a 13% system-wide discount |
| South Orange County Community College District | $3.57 | Same AI product, 2025 |
The Cal State system has spent more than $6 million on Turnitin over seven years. Turnitin did not answer the reporters' questions about how it sets prices. Use these figures as a benchmark when your institution negotiates, not as a price list.
What students can and cannot do
- You do not pay. If your school licenses Turnitin, the cost is covered.
- You submit through your course. Most students never visit turnitin.com; the upload box sits inside Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard or a similar platform.
- You may see your similarity report, but only if the instructor enables it for that assignment.
- You will not see the AI writing score unless the instructor downloads and shares it.
- Pre-checks are limited to Draft Coach, which works in Google Docs or Word online only if your school has licensed and switched it on.
- Third-party "Turnitin checkers" are not Turnitin. Turnitin sells only to institutions, so a site selling individual reports is not using an official student plan.
If you want a second opinion on AI detection, GPTZero has a free plan and publishes its accuracy claims.
iThenticate: the Turnitin product you can buy
iThenticate is Turnitin's checker for research and publishing, and it is sold to individuals as prepaid credits:
| Package | Price (excl. tax) | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Single | $125 | One manuscript up to 25,000 words |
| Multiple | $300 | Up to 3 manuscripts, or one up to 75,000 words |
Both last 12 months and include 5 free revisions. AI writing detection is not available on individual credits. Organisations can get custom pricing, and institutional iThenticate 2.0 customers can add AI detection as an add-on. It ranks #2 in our best plagiarism checkers.
- Institutions: ask Turnitin for a quote both with and without the Originality add-on, so you know exactly what AI detection costs per student.
- Buy through a consortium or system-wide contract where you can. Published records show group deals lowering per-student prices.
- Before paying for iThenticate, check whether your university library already licenses it for thesis checks.
- Students: do not pay any website that promises a real Turnitin report. Ask your instructor whether Draft Coach is enabled instead.
- For a thesis over 25,000 words, buy the $300 Multiple iThenticate credit once rather than splitting the document across Single credits.
Jargon explained
- Similarity score
- The share of a paper that matches text in Turnitin's database. It shows overlap, not whether plagiarism happened.
- Repository
- Turnitin's store of past student submissions. Papers added to it are used to check future work.
- Institutional licence
- A contract a school or university signs so its staff and students can use the software, usually priced per enrolled student.
- AI bypasser
- A tool, often called a humanizer, that rewrites AI text so detectors are less likely to flag it.
- LTI
- Learning Tools Interoperability, a standard that lets tools like Turnitin plug into learning platforms such as Canvas or Moodle.
