Best Turnitin Alternatives (2026): 7 Checkers Compared

Quick answer

Most people look for a Turnitin alternative because they cannot buy Turnitin at all. The best pick depends on what you need to check:

  • AI detection with a free plan: GPTZero, from $12.99 a month billed yearly
  • The most accurate AI detector in independent tests: Pangram, from $20 a month
  • A student pre-check that is not stored: Scribbr Plagiarism Checker, $19.95 per document
  • A thesis or journal article: iThenticate, Turnitin's own research tool, from $125
  • Publishers and agencies: Originality.ai, plagiarism and AI in one scan
  • Code and cross-language plagiarism: Copyleaks
  • A free quick check inside your editor: Grammarly

For institutions, Turnitin still ranks #1 in our best plagiarism checkers because of its student-paper archive. Switch when you need something it does not offer, not because it fails at plagiarism checks.

Why people look for Turnitin alternatives

You cannot buy it

Turnitin sells only to institutions and its FAQ says students get access through their school. Freelancers, tutors, parents and students whose school does not license it need a tool they can sign up for themselves.

The AI score is hard to trust

Turnitin's AI indicator is an extra-cost add-on with little independent testing, because researchers cannot easily buy it. Vanderbilt and Washington State both turned it off. Institutions that want AI detection often compare standalone detectors with published results.

Students cannot see the AI report

Turnitin says the AI writing report is not visible to students unless an instructor shares it. People who want to see what a detector thinks of their own writing before submitting need a separate tool.

Papers can be stored indefinitely

Institutions can add submissions to Turnitin's repository, and CalMatters and The Markup reported that Turnitin asks for a perpetual licence to scanned student work. Writers who do not want that choose checkers that promise not to store documents.

Opaque, uneven pricing

Published records show colleges paying from $1.79 to $6.50 per student a year for the same product. Smaller institutions with little bargaining power often look for cheaper checkers with public price lists.

The best Turnitin alternatives, reviewed

#1 · Best for teachers and students who want AI detection they can buy

GPTZero

by GPTZero (owned by Superhuman) · from $12.99/month billed yearly (Premium); free plan · free plan
8.2/10

GPTZero is the most direct replacement for Turnitin's AI indicator, and anyone can sign up. The free plan scans 10,000 words a month. Premium, at $23.99 a month or $155.88 a year, adds a plagiarism checker, downloadable reports and 300,000 words. Teachers get writing replay in Google Docs, and the Professional plan adds Canvas and Google Classroom integration. In the October 2025 University of Chicago study it was careful with human writing but missed about half or more of humanized AI text. It ranks #2 in our best AI detectors. Compare them in GPTZero vs Turnitin.

Versus Turnitin: Open to individuals with a free plan, but no archive of past student papers.

#2 · Best for the most accurate AI detection

Pangram

by Pangram Labs · from $20/month (Individual); free plan · free plan
8.7/10

Pangram is the AI detector with the strongest independent record. It led the October 2025 University of Chicago study, with near-zero false positives and false negatives on medium and long passages, and it ranks #1 in our best AI detectors and our AI detectors for teachers rankings. The free plan scans 2,000 words a day and works in over 20 languages. The Individual plan costs $20 a month ($180 billed yearly) for 300,000 words, with plagiarism detection on every scan. Institutional licences with LMS integration are quoted. It is newer and less embedded in schools than Turnitin.

Versus Turnitin: Better-tested AI detection, but a far smaller plagiarism database.

#3 · Best for theses, dissertations and journal articles

iThenticate

by Turnitin · from $125 per manuscript
7.8/10

iThenticate is Turnitin's own checker for researchers, and unlike Turnitin, individuals can buy it. $125 covers one manuscript up to 25,000 words, and $300 covers up to three or one long document up to 75,000 words, each with five free revisions over 12 months. It checks against paywalled scholarly content that free web checkers cannot see, and many journals use the same engine to screen submissions. It ranks #2 in our best plagiarism checkers. The catches: individual credits do not include AI detection, and the price is steep for short essays.

Versus Turnitin: Same company's research database, sold per document to individuals.

#4 · Best for students checking an essay before submitting

Scribbr Plagiarism Checker

by Scribbr · from $19.95 per check (up to 7,499 words) · free plan
7.5/10

Scribbr is the plagiarism checker we recommend for students who want one reliable check before a deadline. It compares your document with about 99 billion web pages and 8 million publications from publishers such as Springer and Elsevier, and it says submissions are never added to its database, so your final Turnitin submission will not match your own draft. A free check tells you whether matches exist; a full report costs $19.95 up to 7,499 words, $29.95 up to 49,999 and $39.95 above that. It ranks #3 in our plagiarism ranking. It cannot see private university paper archives.

Versus Turnitin: A one-off, unstored pre-check you can buy; no student-paper archive.

#5 · Best for publishers, agencies and editors

Originality.ai

by Originality.ai · from $12.95/month billed yearly (Pro) · free plan
6.5/10

Originality.ai runs plagiarism and AI detection in one scan, which suits people who commission or publish writing. Pro costs $14.95 a month or $12.95 billed yearly for 2,000 credits, where one credit covers 100 words of one check type, and extra team seats cost $9.95 a month. The free tier gives three AI scans a day of up to 2,000 words. Its AI detector landed in the second tier of the 2025 University of Chicago study, and it ranks #3 in our best AI detectors. Its plagiarism database is web-focused, so it is a poor fit for academic papers.

Versus Turnitin: Plagiarism plus AI in one report with public prices, but no academic archive.

#6 · Best for code and cross-language plagiarism

Copyleaks

by Copyleaks · from $13.99/month billed yearly (Personal)
6.4/10

Copyleaks covers more kinds of copying than most rivals: text, cross-language plagiarism, source code, and AI text and image detection, with plug-ins for Canvas, Moodle and other learning platforms. The Personal plan costs $16.99 a month or $13.99 billed yearly for 100 credits a month, about 25,000 words, since one credit covers up to 250 words. Pro costs $99.99 a month or $74.99 billed yearly, and education plans are quoted. It finished mid-table in the only multi-tool comparison that included it, which was run by a competitor, so accuracy evidence is weaker than its feature list.

Versus Turnitin: More detection types and public prices, but a weaker accuracy record.

#7 · Best for a quick free check inside your writing app

Grammarly Plagiarism Checker

by Superhuman (Grammarly) · from Free basic check; Pro $12/month billed yearly · free plan
5.7/10

Grammarly's checker is the most convenient option if you already write with Grammarly. The free plan shows whether your text matches anything and includes a free AI detector; Pro, at $12 a month billed yearly or $30 month to month, adds the full report with sources. Grammarly says it does not sell or share checked documents. The trade-off is accuracy: a 2025 peer-reviewed study found it caught little plagiarism even in untranslated English papers, and it sits #7 in our best plagiarism checkers. Use it as a sanity check, not a final one.

Versus Turnitin: Free and built into your editor, but finds far less copied text.

How to choose the right Turnitin alternative

Start with who you are and what you need to check.

You are... Pick Why
A student pre-checking an essay Scribbr Plagiarism Checker Large database, pay per check, never stores your paper
A student or teacher checking for AI GPTZero or Pangram Free plans; Pangram leads independent tests
A researcher with a thesis or article iThenticate Paywalled journal coverage from $125
An editor or agency Originality.ai Plagiarism and AI in one scan
A department checking code Copyleaks Source-code plagiarism detection
A school without Turnitin GPTZero Professional or Copyleaks education plans LMS integration without an enterprise contract

No checker proves misconduct on its own. Every tool in our best AI detectors ranking makes mistakes, and every plagiarism checker struggles with paraphrased and translated text. Read how AI detectors work before acting on any score.

Switching tips from our editors
  1. Institutions: export your Turnitin assignment reports and ask about deleting stored submissions before your contract ends. Turnitin's FAQ says it supports full deletion requests for an institution's submissions.
  2. Run the same five known papers (human, AI-written and copied) through each candidate before you buy, and compare false flags as well as catches.
  3. Students: check drafts only with tools that promise not to store them, or your final submission may match your own earlier version.
  4. If your school already has Turnitin, keep it for plagiarism and add a separate AI detector only after writing a clear policy on how scores may be used.
  5. Researchers: see whether your library already licenses iThenticate before buying credits.

Jargon explained

Similarity score
The share of a paper that matches text in Turnitin's database. It shows overlap, not whether plagiarism happened.
Repository
Turnitin's store of past student submissions. Papers added to it are used to check future work.
Institutional licence
A contract a school or university signs so its staff and students can use the software, usually priced per enrolled student.
AI bypasser
A tool, often called a humanizer, that rewrites AI text so detectors are less likely to flag it.
LTI
Learning Tools Interoperability, a standard that lets tools like Turnitin plug into learning platforms such as Canvas or Moodle.
