Ideogram is an AI image generator built for graphics with words in them: posters, logos, social posts, T-shirts and ads. You type a prompt on the website or iPhone app and it returns images where headlines and labels are usually spelled right. Its latest model, Ideogram 4.0, launched on 3 June 2026 and also comes as free-to-download weights for non-commercial use.
Ideogram ranks #7 of 11 in our best AI image generators, where it is our pick for text and layouts. It is not a photorealism leader: on the Arena text-to-image board, Ideogram 4.0 Quality sits 18th. But few tools give you as much control over where text goes and what colour it is.
Ideogram is worth $15 to $20 a month if your images need readable, well-placed text: flyers, merch, ads, thumbnails and lettering-led logos. Its JSON prompts and unlimited slow generations on paid plans make it good value for design work. If you mostly want lifelike people and scenes, ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot do better, and if you need editable vector logos, Recraft is the better fit.

Key features, explained
Text and typography with Ideogram 4.0
Ideogram 4.0 is a 9.3-billion-parameter model trained from scratch that renders natively at 2K and handles text in several languages. Ideogram cites a blind typography test by ContraLabs in which ten professional designers picked it first 47.9% of the time, against 30.0% for Google's Nano Banana 2. Put exact words in quotes and it usually spells them correctly.
JSON prompts and Magic Prompt
Ideogram 4.0 was trained on structured JSON captions, so you can describe an image as a list of elements. Each element gets a position box, its own text and up to five hex colours, with up to 16 colours for the whole image. You do not have to write JSON yourself: Magic Prompt can expand a plain sentence into a full structured caption.
Canvas, Magic Fill and editable text
The Canvas lets you extend an image beyond its edges and use Magic Fill to repaint a masked area while keeping the rest. With Ideogram 4.0, Ideogram lists editable text layers, reframing, remixing and background removal among its follow-up tools. Paid plans can upscale up to 2x, though Upscale crops images to the nearest supported aspect ratio.
Character and style references
Upload a face or a sample image and Ideogram reuses the character or the look in new images. Plus and Pro list unlimited character consistency. On paid plans, reference and AI edit jobs always use priority credits and never run in the slow queue. On the free plan they run on slow credits, so they are available but slower.
AI Apps for everyday jobs
Ideogram bundles single-purpose apps for common design chores: Background Remover for transparent PNG cut-outs, Object Remover, Ad Resizer for reformatting an ad to other sizes, Colorways for product colour variants and Material Swap. Each opens from the Tools menu and costs credits like any other generation.
Batch Generation
On Pro and Team plans you can upload a spreadsheet of prompts and settings (CSV, XLS, XLSX or ODS, up to 1 MB) with up to 500 prompt rows. Each row becomes one generation. Ideogram shows the total image count and the priority credits needed before you start, and you download the results as a ZIP file.
Open weights, API and MCP
Ideogram 4 is the company's first open-weight model, published on GitHub and Hugging Face under a non-commercial licence, so business use goes through the paid service. The prepaid API charges per image, from $0.03 for Ideogram 4.0 Turbo. An MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude call Ideogram directly.

What users say about Ideogram
Ratings are good but mixed in tone. Ideogram scores 4.8 out of 5 on the US App Store from about 2,600 ratings and 4.0 on Trustpilot from 164 reviews. Trustpilot reviewers praise the image quality, especially typography and realistic compositions, the intuitive interface and a support team that answers quickly. Many use it to save time on marketing, social media and product design. The complaints are mostly about value and billing. Some find the free plan too thin to test properly, with editing locked behind a paywall. Others report unexpected charges, dislike recent changes that made previously included features cost credits, and say text and prompt following can still be inconsistent. A few call complex generations slow.

Ideogram's cheapest paid plan is Plus at $20 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly ($180). Pro costs $60 a month or $42 billed yearly ($504), and Team is $30 per user a month or $20 billed yearly, with a two-user minimum. Plus includes 1,000 priority credits a month, Pro 3,500 and Team 1,500 per user, and every paid plan adds unlimited slow generations. The free plan gives eligible accounts weekly slow credits. Prices are in US dollars, exclude tax and come from Ideogram's pricing page as of September 2026.
Plus suits most freelancers and small businesses. Choose Pro for batch generation from a spreadsheet and three and a half times the priority credits. The API is billed separately, per image.

Where Ideogram ranks, and why
Our best AI image generators ranking weighs image quality (30%), prompt accuracy and text (20%), editing and control (20%), price and free access (15%) and rights and safety (15%). Ideogram 4.0 places #7 of 11. It is strongest on prompt accuracy and text, and it is our pick for text and layouts. It loses ground on image quality: on the Arena text-to-image board of 21 September 2026, Ideogram 4.0 Quality sits 18th, well behind the top models in our list.
It does better where typography is the whole job:
| Our ranking | Ideogram's place |
|---|---|
| Best AI logo generators | #4 of 8 |
| Best AI tattoo generators | #5 of 7 |
| Best AI graphic design tools | #6 of 7 |
| Best free AI image generators | #9 of 9 |
Privacy, ownership and the open-weights licence
- Public by default. Every image is published to Ideogram's community feed unless you are on Plus or higher and choose Unpublished. Paid users can also unpublish older images and delete them.
- Private images stay private. Ideogram says unpublished images remain private after a subscription ends, and you can still download them as JPG.
- Ownership. Ideogram says it does not claim ownership of your images and that you can use them for any purpose, including commercial use, on any plan.
- Open weights are different. The downloadable Ideogram 4 weights use a non-commercial licence. To sell work made with the model, use the website or API.
- Enterprise offers legal indemnification, private custom models trained on your own images and dedicated support, Ideogram says.
Who should skip Ideogram
Skip it if you mostly make photos of people, food or places. The blind-vote leaders, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, produce more lifelike results, and two of them are free.
Skip it too if you need a finished logo file. Ideogram outputs pixel images, so a logo must be traced into a vector (SVG) before print use. Recraft produces real vectors. And if you need multi-page layouts, brand kits and editable templates, generate the artwork in Ideogram and finish it in Canva.
- Put every word you want in double quotes and keep headlines short. Ideogram spells short phrases far more reliably than whole sentences.
- Let Magic Prompt turn your idea into a JSON caption, then edit the JSON to move a headline or fix a hex colour instead of rewriting the prompt.
- Draft in Turbo and rerun only the keepers in Quality. Ideogram's price list charges roughly three times more credits for Quality than for Turbo on Ideogram 4.0.
- On a paid plan, switch visibility to Unpublished before generating client work. The default is public.
- Sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft on the free plan. Ideogram says those accounts are the ones eligible for weekly free credits.
Ideogram alternatives
Jargon explained
- Priority credits
- Ideogram's paid credits. They generate images straight away and are needed for AI editing. Monthly ones expire at the end of each billing cycle.
- Slow credits
- Credits that run in a slower queue. They are unlimited on paid plans and given weekly to eligible free accounts.
- JSON prompt
- A prompt written as a structured list of elements, each with its own position, text and colours, so the model follows an exact layout.
- Open weights
- The trained model files are published so you can download and run the model yourself. Ideogram 4's licence allows non-commercial use only.
- Raster vs vector
- A raster image is made of pixels and blurs when enlarged. A vector (SVG) image is made of shapes and stays sharp at any size, which is why logos use it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ideogram free?
Yes. Eligible free accounts get weekly slow credits, and Ideogram says the amount may vary. Free images are public and run one at a time. Paid plans start at $15 a month billed yearly. See Ideogram pricing.
Is Ideogram better than Midjourney?
For text inside images and exact layouts, yes: Ideogram ranks #7 and Midjourney #10 in our best AI image generators. For a painterly, cinematic look, many artists still prefer Midjourney.
Can I use Ideogram images commercially?
Yes. Ideogram says it does not claim ownership and you may use your images for any purpose, including commercial use. The downloadable open weights are the exception: their licence is non-commercial.
Can Ideogram make logos?
It is very good at lettering-led logo concepts and ranks #4 in our best AI logo generators. It outputs raster images, not vectors, so a final logo needs tracing into SVG.
Is Ideogram open source?
Partly. Ideogram released the Ideogram 4 model weights on GitHub and Hugging Face in June 2026 under a non-commercial licence. The website, apps and API are paid services.
Does Ideogram have an app?
Yes, for iPhone, rated 4.8 from about 2,600 ratings as of September 2026. Ideogram's site links only to an iPhone app, so Android users use the website.
