Kling AI is the best Runway alternative if cost per clip is the problem: the same Kling 3.0 model costs far less on Kling's own plans. Google Flow gives the best blind-test quality and 50 free credits a day. Luma suits marketers who want an agent to run whole campaigns, Seedance makes the longest reference-heavy shots, and Adobe Firefly fits teams already in Adobe apps. If you edit real footage rather than generate it, Descript is the better tool, and Wan 2.2 is free if you have a strong GPU.
Why people look for Runway alternatives
Cost per second is high
Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits a second, so the $15 Standard plan buys about 52 seconds of it a month. Trustpilot and App Store reviewers say credits run out long before they get a usable result.
No refunds for misses
Runway only returns credits when a generation errors. Clips that ignore the prompt still cost full price, which is the most common complaint in reviews.
Unlimited is going away
Runway stopped selling Unlimited on 1 June 2026, and Explore Mode ends for remaining subscribers on 30 November 2026. Heavy users who relied on relaxed, credit-free generation are looking for cheaper volume elsewhere.
Better models exist elsewhere
Runway's own Gen-4.5 no longer leads blind-test arenas. If you mainly use Runway for partner models, it can be cheaper to go direct to Kling or Google.
by Kuaishou · from $6.99 first month, then $8.80/month (Standard) · free plan
8.6/10
Kling is the obvious move if you mostly used Runway for partner models. On Kling's own Standard plan, 660 credits cover eleven 5-second 1080p clips with native audio, where Runway charges 85 credits for a 5-second Kling 3.0 Pro clip with audio. Kling 3.0 makes clips up to 15 seconds, supports start and end frames and reference elements, and can render native 4K for subscribers. It ranks #2 in our best AI video generators. You lose Runway's editing and finishing tools, and Kling's credits expire after 31 days.
Versus Runway:The same Kling model for much less per clip, without Runway's editing studio.
#2 · Best for best overall quality and free daily clips
Google Flow (Gemini Omni Flash + Veo 3.1)
by Google · from $4.99/month (Google AI Plus, US) · free plan
9.0/10
Flow is Google's video studio and our top-ranked video generator. Everyone gets 50 credits a day, enough for about five Veo 3.1 Lite clips, and paid Google AI plans add monthly credits from 200 on the $4.99 AI Plus plan to 25,000 on the top Ultra tier. Paid plans also unlock Gemini Omni Flash, which lets you change a clip by describing the edit in plain words. Runway charges 320 credits for an 8-second Veo 3.1 clip; in Flow, Veo 3.1 Fast costs 20 credits for most users. Flow has fewer pro exports and team tools.
Versus Runway:Higher quality and daily free credits, but fewer editing and team features.
#3 · Best for marketers who want an agent to run campaigns
Luma (Ray3.14 + Luma Agents)
by Luma AI · from $25/month billed yearly, $30 monthly (Plus)
7.7/10
Luma is the closest match to Runway's all-in-one approach. Its plans cover Luma's own Ray models and third-party image and video models, and Luma Agents can take a brief and plan several generation steps to produce a set of assets, much like Runway's Agent. Plus includes 10,000 credits a month with commercial use, Pro costs $90 a month for 40,000 credits and Ultra $300 for 150,000. There is no free plan, and Luma lacks Runway's Act-Two and Aleph editing.
Versus Runway:Similar multi-model idea with a stronger agent focus, but no free tier and fewer editing tools.
#4 · Best for long shots directed with many references
Seedance 2.0 / 2.5 (Dreamina, CapCut)
by ByteDance · from Dreamina and CapCut prices vary by region; also in Runway Pro
8.5/10
If Seedance is the model you reach for most inside Runway, going to ByteDance's own apps can make sense. Dreamina says Seedance 2.5 accepts up to 50 references (images, video, audio and text) and makes clips up to 30 seconds. It is rolling out to Dreamina subscribers aged 16 and over in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America, and Seedance 2.0 is reaching CapCut country by country. Seedance blocks real faces and adds an invisible watermark. Availability is the catch, especially in the US.
Versus Runway:Longer, reference-heavy shots, but uneven access by country.
by Adobe · from $9.99/month (Firefly Standard, 2,000 credits) · free plan
8.3/10
Firefly brings AI video into the Adobe workflow. Besides Adobe's own Firefly Video Model, its plans page lists partner video models from Runway, Kling, Luma and Google's Veo, so you can reach several engines on one Adobe bill. A free Adobe account gets limited daily generations, and Standard costs $9.99 a month for 2,000 credits. Runway itself now has panels inside Premiere Pro and After Effects, so heavy Adobe users can also mix the two.
Versus Runway:Several partner models under an Adobe plan, with fewer specialist tools than Runway.
by Descript · from $16/month billed yearly (Hobbyist) · free plan
8.4/10
Some people use Runway to fix footage rather than to invent it. If your videos are mostly people talking, Descript is a better fit: it transcribes your recording and lets you cut the video by editing the text. Studio Sound cleans up audio, Remove Filler Words cuts the ums, and Eye Contact fixes eyes drifting to notes. It can also generate B-roll with models such as Seedance 2.0. It ranks #1 in our best AI video editors, where Runway sits near the bottom because it is a generator first.
Versus Runway:A full editor for real recordings, with far less generative power.
#7 · Best for developers who want free, private generation
Wan 2.2 (open source)
by Alibaba · from Free (Apache 2.0) · free plan
7.8/10
Wan 2.2 is an open-source video model released in July 2025 under the Apache 2.0 licence, so you can run it on your own hardware and use the output commercially. There are no credits, queues or watermarks. The smallest model makes a 5-second 720p clip on a single 24GB GPU, such as an RTX 4090, in under 9 minutes, and larger models need far more memory or rented cloud GPUs. Quality is below Gen-4.5 and there is no studio around it.
Versus Runway:Free and private, but slow, technical and lower quality.
No per-clip costs at all: Wan 2.2 on your own GPU.
If you rely on Act-Two or Aleph 2.0, no single rival replaces both, so consider keeping a smaller Runway plan alongside a cheaper generator. Our best AI video generators ranking scores each option.
Switching tips from our editors
Download every asset you want to keep before you cancel. Runway's help centre says your credit balance resets to zero once a plan ends.
Spend plan credits first, and keep bought credits for last: purchased credits never expire, so there is no rush to use them.
If you are on legacy Unlimited, decide before 30 November 2026. Monthly plans switch to Max at $95 automatically unless you cancel.
Save your best prompts with the model name and duration. Most rivals accept similar camera language, but test with short drafts first.
If you paid through Apple or Google, cancel and request any refund through that store; Runway cannot process those payments.
Runway's in-app currency. Each plan includes a monthly amount, and every model charges a set number of credits per second, image or minute.
Explore Mode
A relaxed generation mode on Runway's old Unlimited plan that used no credits but could queue at busy times.
Performance capture
Recording a real person's movement and expressions and transferring them onto a digital character.
ProRes
A high-quality Apple video format used in professional editing, which keeps more detail than a normal MP4.
Rollover
Carrying unused credits into the next month instead of losing them. Runway allows one month on Max and Team.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest alternative to Runway?
Google Flow's 50 free daily credits cost nothing, and Kling's Standard plan costs $8.80 a month after a $6.99 first month. If you have a strong GPU, Wan 2.2 is free to run.
Is there a Runway alternative with unlimited generations?
Not among the tools we checked. Runway's own Unlimited plan is no longer sold. Running an open-source model such as Wan 2.2 on your own GPU is the only way to generate without per-clip limits.
Is Kling better than Runway?
For price per clip, yes. For a full production studio with editing, performance capture and team tools, Runway is stronger. See our Kling AI review and Runway review.
What replaces Runway's Act-Two?
No rival we checked matches Act-Two exactly. Kling's Motion Control recreates movement from a reference video, which covers some of the same jobs. Compare options in our best AI animation generators.
