Sudowrite is a web and mobile app built for one job: helping you write fiction. You describe your story in a Story Bible (synopsis, characters, world, outline), and its tools use that to brainstorm ideas, draft chapters scene by scene, expand or rewrite passages and give editor-style notes. It runs on its own fiction-tuned model, Muse, plus models from Anthropic, OpenAI and others.

It ranks #1 in our best AI story generators, #6 in our best AI for writing and #7 in our best AI script writers. This review explains what each tool does, how the credit system works in practice, and what writers like and dislike about it.

8.6/10
Our verdictRanked #1 of 8 in our Best AI Story Generators

Sudowrite is worth paying for if you are writing a novel or a series and want AI help from outline to line edits. The Story Bible and chapter linking keep a long manuscript more consistent than a single chatbot conversation can. Budget with care: credit use depends heavily on the model, and most working novelists will want the $22 Professional plan (billed yearly) for its bigger credit pool and Feedback tool. For short stories or occasional help, Claude or ChatGPT is cheaper.

Best for

  • Novelists drafting and revising a full-length book
  • Series authors who need characters and world details shared across books
  • Writers stuck on a scene who want options, not a finished book
  • Self-published authors who release several books a year (Max plan)

Skip it if

  • Non-fiction, essays or business writing
  • Screenwriters who need industry-standard script formatting
  • Occasional writers who would pay for credits they rarely use

What we like

  • Story Bible keeps characters, world and outline in front of the AI
  • Muse, a fiction-tuned model that Sudowrite trains to avoid AI clichés
  • Choice of many models, from cheap to top-tier
  • Feedback leaves editor-style margin notes that know your Story Bible
  • No-card free trial, a 7-day refund and easy cancellation

Watch out for

  • No free plan, and $19 a month if you do not pay yearly
  • Credit use is hard to predict and varies more than 100-fold by model
  • Feedback is only on Professional and Max
  • Unused credits expire monthly except on Max
  • Project exports leave out the Story Bible

Key features, explained

Story Bible

The Story Bible is a structured file for each project: a braindump, genre, style, synopsis, characters, worldbuilding and an outline. You can fill each section yourself or press Generate for a suggestion, then edit it. Sudowrite treats it as the source of truth, so its tools refer back to your characters and rules instead of guessing. If you write a series, projects in a Series folder share characters, worldbuilding and outline visibility.

Draft and Chapter Continuity

Draft turns an outline chapter into prose. You list the scenes (who, where, what happens), and Draft writes each one using your style, genre, characters and worldbuilding. Chapter Continuity lets you link a document to the chapter before it, so tools like Write and Draft read earlier events and keep tone and character arcs consistent. Chapters generated from the outline are linked in order automatically.

Write, Describe, Expand and Rewrite

Inside the editor, a toolbar of smaller tools works on your own prose. Write continues from your cursor in your voice. Describe offers sensory detail for a chosen word or moment. Expand turns a short passage or outline beat into a fuller scene. Rewrite rephrases a selection with a direction such as more tension or more inner conflict, and Brainstorm suggests names, plot turns and character ideas. Quick Edit and Chat are included in every plan without using credits.

Muse and model choice

Muse is Sudowrite's own model, trained only on fiction. The company says it measures and removes common AI clichés during training, and it is the default in Draft and Write. Its help centre describes Muse as virtually unfiltered, so it will write dark or adult themes that other models refuse. You can also pick other models, which Sudowrite updated in September 2026 with Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna.

Feedback

Feedback reads a scene, chapter or whole book and leaves comments in the margin, like a human editor. Because it sees your Story Bible, its notes refer to your characters and outline rather than generic writing rules. You choose from over a dozen types, including developmental, line and dialogue edits and AI beta readers, or write your own. Feedback is only available on the Professional and Max plans.

Plugins and the mobile app

Plugins are custom AI tools that users build and share, a bit like browser extensions. They can write, edit or analyse text to your own rules, for example checking a chapter against a style guide. Sudowrite also has iPhone and Android apps that sync projects with the web app and share the same credits, which helps you capture ideas or dictate scenes away from your desk.

What users say about Sudowrite

Reviews are positive about the writing tools and mixed about money. Sudowrite's iPhone app scores 4.5 out of 5 from 379 ratings on the US App Store, its Android app 3.8 from 697 ratings on Google Play, and the company 2.9 from 32 reviews on Trustpilot. Writers praise the Story Bible for keeping characters and places consistent, and say Brainstorm, Describe and Feedback help them past blank pages. The complaints repeat: credits run out sooner than expected or disappear at the monthly reset, some find the generated prose bland or overwritten, and a few report billing problems, slow responses or error messages. Writers in online forums often compare it with Novelcrafter, which some prefer for planning and for paying their own AI provider directly.

How Sudowrite credits work

Every plan comes with a monthly pool of credits, and each AI action spends some of them. Sudowrite's help centre says there is no fixed price per feature: the cost depends on the model, the prose mode and how much context the AI reads. Its own example is striking. Generating 200 words with Write costs about 70 credits with a small, cheap model but more than 8,000 with a top-tier Claude model, over 100 times as much.

Plan Credits a month What that means with a costly model
Hobby & Student 225,000 About 28 of those 200-word requests
Professional 1,000,000 About 125
Max 2,000,000 (rolls over for 12 months) About 250

Quick Edit and Chat are included without using credits unless you switch on their High Quality modes. Check spending under Settings, Show Recent Activity. Plan prices are on our Sudowrite pricing page.

Ownership, privacy and content rules

Sudowrite says it claims no rights over what you put into the app or what it generates for you, and that it does not use your writing to train its own or OpenAI's models. If you cancel, you keep access to your projects and can export them, but you lose the AI features. Exports come as .docx or a .zip of documents; the Story Bible is not included, so copy it out separately.

Muse is described as virtually unfiltered and willing to handle violence and adult themes, while other models keep their own providers' filters. Whatever you publish, you remain responsible for it, and publishers or platforms may ask whether AI was used.

What changed in 2026

  • July and August: new models including Claude Opus 5 and Kimi K3 arrived, and GPT-5.6 Luna became 70% cheaper in credits.
  • September: Sudowrite added Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, saying the newest models use fewer credits than the ones they replace. Rewrite moved to an in-house model, Chat got faster, and Character Portraits arrived in the Story Bible on 25 September.
  • Credits: Professional now includes 1,000,000 credits a month; Sudowrite's pricing page shows the earlier 450,000 figure crossed out.
Expert tips
  1. Fill in the Story Bible before you draft. Even a short synopsis, three character entries and a chapter outline make Draft and Write far more consistent.
  2. Link every chapter to the one before it with Chapter Continuity, so the AI reads what just happened instead of inventing it.
  3. Use a cheaper model for brainstorming and first passes, and save Muse or a top-tier model for the scenes you will actually keep.
  4. Add up to 1,000 words of your own prose as Style Examples for Muse, so drafts sound more like you.
  5. Check Settings, Show Recent Activity after your first week to see which tools and models eat your credits.

Jargon explained

Story Bible
Sudowrite's reference file for a project: synopsis, characters, worldbuilding and outline that its AI tools read before writing.
Credits
Sudowrite's usage units. Each plan includes a monthly amount, and each AI request spends some, more for bigger models and longer context.
Muse
Sudowrite's own AI model, trained only on fiction and designed to avoid common AI clichés.
Bring your own key (BYOK)
Connecting a writing app to your own account with an AI provider, so you pay the provider directly for what you use.
Context
How much text the AI can read at once, such as earlier chapters and notes. More context helps it stay consistent.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sudowrite free?

No. There is no free plan, but new accounts get a free trial with a limited number of credits and no card required, and Sudowrite refunds paid plans if you ask within the first 7 days. Plans start at $10 a month billed yearly. See our Sudowrite pricing page.

Is Sudowrite good for writing a novel?

Yes, it is the best tool in our best AI story generators for that job. The Story Bible, scene-by-scene Draft and Chapter Continuity are designed for long manuscripts. You still need to edit heavily: treat its drafts as raw material, not finished chapters.

Does Sudowrite own what I write?

No. Sudowrite says it claims no rights over anything you put into the app or anything it generates for you, and that it does not use your writing to train its own or OpenAI's models.

What is Sudowrite Muse?

Muse is Sudowrite's in-house AI model, trained only on fiction. The company says it removes common AI clichés during training. It is the default model in Draft and Write, powers Expand, and is described as virtually unfiltered.

Is Sudowrite better than ChatGPT for fiction?

For a full novel, usually yes, because it keeps your characters, world and earlier chapters in view automatically. For a short story, a scene or brainstorming, ChatGPT or Claude is cheaper and often just as good.
