Sudowrite Pricing (2026): Plans, Credits and Free Trial

Quick answer

Sudowrite has no free plan. The cheapest plan is Hobby & Student at $10 a month billed yearly, or $19 month to month. Every plan includes every feature except Feedback, and the plans mainly differ in credits: 225,000 a month on Hobby & Student, 1,000,000 on Professional ($22 a month yearly, $29 monthly) and 2,000,000 on Max ($44 yearly, $59 monthly), where unused credits roll over for 12 months.

You can start with a no-card free trial, and Sudowrite refunds a new plan if you ask within 7 days. Students and hobbyists should start on Hobby & Student. Anyone drafting a whole novel will usually need Professional.

Prices checked 25 September 2026 on Sudowrite's official pricing page. Prices are in US dollars unless stated and can change at any time.

Is there a free plan?

There is no free plan. New accounts get a free trial with a limited number of credits and no card required; Sudowrite does not publish how many trial credits you get. After you subscribe, Sudowrite says it will cancel and refund your plan if you ask within the first 7 days. If you later cancel, you keep access to your projects and can export them, but the AI tools stop working.

Hidden costs and catches
  • Credit use varies by model. Sudowrite's example: 200 words with Write costs about 70 credits on a small model but more than 8,000 on a top Claude model.
  • Unused credits expire every month on Hobby & Student and Professional; only Max rolls them over.
  • Paying monthly costs much more: $19 against $10 a month on Hobby & Student, $228 against $120 over a year.
  • Subscribing inside the iPhone app costs more. The App Store lists Hobby & Student at $24.99 a month and Professional at $39.99.
  • Extra credit packs are sold separately (the App Store lists 100,000 credits for $5.89 and 500,000 for $22.49) and need an active subscription to use.
  • The Feedback tool needs Professional or Max.

What you will actually pay

Worked examples using the published prices above.

ScenarioCostHow we got there
Student writing short stories for a class$120/year (Hobby & Student, billed yearly)12 x $10 = $120. Paying monthly for a year would cost 12 x $19 = $228.
Novelist drafting one book over 6 months$174 (Professional, monthly for 6 months)6 x $29 = $174, less than the $264 yearly plan if you stop after the draft. Stay 10 months or more and yearly is cheaper (10 x $29 = $290).
Hobby & Student user who runs out of credits$29.90 for the month$19 monthly plan + a 200,000-credit pack in the iPhone app ($10.90) = $29.90, more than Professional's $29 with 1,000,000 credits. Upgrading is better value.
Prolific author releasing several books a year$528/year (Max, billed yearly)12 x $44 = $528 for 2,000,000 credits a month with 12-month rollover. Monthly billing would cost 12 x $59 = $708.

Compare the best Sudowrite alternatives in depth

8.6/10
Is Sudowrite worth the money?Ranked #1 in our Best AI Story Generators

Yes, if you are writing a book. At $10 a month billed yearly, Hobby & Student costs half a general chatbot subscription and includes every tool except Feedback. For a full novel, Professional at $22 a month (yearly) is the better buy: it has more than four times the credits for about twice the price, plus Feedback. Max only pays off if you draft several books a year and want credits to roll over.

The weak spot is predictability: a few long drafts with a premium model can use a month's credits. If you only write occasionally, Claude or ChatGPT is cheaper, and Novelcrafter can be cheaper for heavy users willing to manage their own AI key. Compare them on our Sudowrite alternatives page.

Yearly vs monthly billing

Plan Credits a month Billed yearly Billed monthly Yearly saving
Hobby & Student 225,000 $10/month ($120/year) $19/month ($228/year) $108
Professional 1,000,000 $22/month ($264/year) $29/month ($348/year) $84
Max 2,000,000 (12-month rollover) $44/month ($528/year) $59/month ($708/year) $180

Trial, refunds and cancelling

The trial needs no card and includes a limited number of credits. Once you pay, Sudowrite says you can ask for a full refund within the first 7 days. You can upgrade, downgrade, pause or cancel from your subscription page without contacting anyone. After cancelling you keep your projects and can still open and export them, but AI features stop until you subscribe again. Credit packs you bought never expire, but you need an active plan to use them.

Money-saving tips from our editors
  1. Subscribe on the website, not in the iPhone app. Hobby & Student is $19 a month on the web against $24.99 in the App Store, and the app shares your web subscription anyway.
  2. Upgrade instead of buying credit packs if you run short every month. One extra pack on Hobby & Student costs more than moving to Professional.
  3. Pay yearly only once you know you will write for 10 months or more; before that, monthly billing lets you stop after a draft.
  4. Pick cheaper models for brainstorming and rough passes. Sudowrite's own example shows a 100-fold credit difference between models for the same 200 words.
  5. Use your 7-day refund window to test Draft on a real chapter, and check Show Recent Activity to see what it cost.

Jargon explained

Story Bible
Sudowrite's reference file for a project: synopsis, characters, worldbuilding and outline that its AI tools read before writing.
Credits
Sudowrite's usage units. Each plan includes a monthly amount, and each AI request spends some, more for bigger models and longer context.
Muse
Sudowrite's own AI model, trained only on fiction and designed to avoid common AI clichés.
Bring your own key (BYOK)
Connecting a writing app to your own account with an AI provider, so you pay the provider directly for what you use.
Context
How much text the AI can read at once, such as earlier chapters and notes. More context helps it stay consistent.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Sudowrite cost?

Hobby & Student costs $10 a month billed yearly or $19 monthly, Professional $22 yearly or $29 monthly, and Max $44 yearly or $59 monthly. Prices are in USD.

Does Sudowrite have a free trial?

Yes. New accounts get a limited number of free credits with no card required. Sudowrite also refunds a paid plan if you ask within the first 7 days.

Do Sudowrite credits roll over?

Only on Max, where unused credits roll over for 12 months. On Hobby & Student and Professional, unused credits expire at each monthly reset. Credit packs you buy separately never expire.

How many words do Sudowrite credits buy?

It depends on the model. Sudowrite's example puts 200 words from Write at about 70 credits with a small model and over 8,000 with a top Claude model. So 225,000 credits could cover thousands of cheap requests or fewer than 30 premium ones.

Is there a Sudowrite student discount?

The Hobby & Student plan is the student option: $10 a month billed yearly. Sudowrite's pricing page does not list a separate student discount.
