Writesonic is no longer mainly an AI writing app. It started in 2020 as a tool for AI blog posts and ad copy, but it now sells itself as an "AI Search Growth Engine": it checks every day whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand when people ask about your market, then helps you fix the gaps with AI-written articles, site audits and outreach suggestions. This is often called GEO (generative engine optimisation).
It ranks #8 in our best AI blog writers, where its article writer scores well on SEO and workflow but poorly on value. This review explains what the current product does, what it costs in practice, and who should pick a cheaper writer or a pure tracking tool instead.
Writesonic is worth a trial if you are a marketing team that wants AI-search tracking and the content to act on it in one subscription. It is poor value if you only want blog posts: Starter costs $99 a month ($79 billed yearly) for 15 articles, while Koala starts at $25 a month and ChatGPT or Claude cost $8 to $20. If you only want tracking, Otterly.AI starts at $29 a month.
Score breakdown

- Teams that want SEO audits and AI-search data side by side
Skip it if
- Bloggers and freelancers who only need article drafts

- Teams that need Perplexity, Claude or Copilot tracking without an Enterprise contract
What we like
- AI visibility tracking, site audits and an article writer in one platform
- Daily tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews from the cheapest plan
- Action Center ranks what to fix first by likely impact on AI citations
- 7-day free trial without a card, plus a 7-day refund
- High ratings on Capterra (4.8) and Trustpilot (4.6), though mostly from its writer years

- Only 3 AI platforms below Enterprise; Perplexity, Claude and Copilot need a custom plan
- Full Action Center and agent workflows are Enterprise only
- The old word-based writing plans are gone from the pricing page
- Trustpilot reviewers report charges after cancelling and slow support
Key features, explained
AI visibility tracking
You choose, or accept Writesonic's suggestions for, the questions buyers ask AI assistants about your market. Writesonic runs them every day in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and reports how often your brand appears, which sources the answers cite and how you compare with competitors. Starter tracks 50 prompts and 50 answers a day, Basic 100 and 300, Growth 200 and 600. Sentiment analysis starts on Growth, and Enterprise covers 10 platforms.
Action Center
The Action Center turns tracking data into a to-do list. It ranks opportunities by likely effect on visibility and citations: prompts where you are missing, sources that cite competitors but not you, pages to refresh and technical problems. Writesonic says it surfaces the 5 to 10 to work on each week. Growth includes a trial of 5 off-page and 5 on-page actions a month; the full version needs Enterprise.
AI Article Writer
The writer that made Writesonic's name is still included: 15 articles a month on Starter, 25 on Basic and 50 on Growth. It draws on Google Keyword Planner, search results and Reddit, can use your own uploaded data and a saved brand voice, and publishes to WordPress. Growth customers can buy 20 extra articles for $100. It is a capable SEO writer, but it now sits inside a much more expensive product.
Site audits and AI crawler checks
Site audits look for problems that stop search engines and AI assistants reading your pages: blocked AI crawlers in robots.txt, missing schema markup, indexing gaps and broken pages seen by bots such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Starter includes 10 audits of 100 pages a month, Basic 20 audits of 1,200 pages and Growth 50 audits of 2,500 pages. Writesonic says it can draft fixes you apply with one click.
AI agents for content and citations
Writesonic's agents rewrite pages so AI engines are more likely to quote them, adding FAQ blocks, comparison tables and self-contained passages. They also find Reddit threads, YouTube videos and listicles that mention competitors and draft outreach. Writesonic claims 85% of AI citations come from sites a brand does not own. Self-serve plans get limited trial runs (10, 50 or 100); full agent workflows need Enterprise.
Research tools and integrations
Extra research tools include AI search volume, a Brand Explorer for comparing brands and topics, and tracking of ads inside ChatGPT and Google's AI answers. Writesonic says its dataset covers more than 2 billion AI conversations across 10 platforms. It connects to Google Search Console, GA4, WordPress and Looker Studio, and offers an API and an MCP server so AI assistants can pull its data.

What users say about Writesonic
Writesonic's public ratings are high, but most were written when it was mainly an AI writing tool. It scores 4.8 out of 5 from 2,102 reviews on Capterra and 4.6 from about 5,800 on Trustpilot. Reviewers praise how quickly it produces SEO-friendly drafts, how easy it is to use and how much time it saves across blog posts, emails and product descriptions. Recent Capterra reviews still focus on writing rather than AI visibility tracking, so there is little independent feedback yet on the GEO features. The complaints are about money and support: monthly limits that run out, prices seen as high next to ChatGPT, charges after cancelling, slow replies to billing emails, and long-time users unhappy with changes to Chatsonic.
Users praise
- Fast, SEO-friendly drafts that need little editing
- Easy to use for beginners
- Big time savings on routine content
- Covers many content types in one tool
Users complain about
- Monthly limits run out for heavy users
- Expensive next to general chatbots
- Charges after cancelling and slow billing support
- Older features such as Chatsonic changed or got worse
| Review site | Rating | Reviews | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capterra | 4.8/5 | 2,102 | 2026-09 |

Full Writesonic pricing breakdown, hidden costs and money-saving tips
From AI writer to AI search platform
Writesonic was founded in San Francisco in October 2020 by Samanyou Garg, with a $2.5 million seed round from investors including Y Combinator. It grew on AI copywriting and blog tools, then added Chatsonic (a chat assistant), Botsonic (a website chatbot builder) and Photosonic (images). In 2023 it moved into SEO, and in 2024 it launched an SEO agent that connects to tools such as Google Search Console and Keyword Planner.
By 2026 it had repositioned again, as a platform for visibility in AI answers. Its pricing page now sells only AI search plans (Starter, Basic, Growth and Enterprise, plus agency plans), with the article writer as one feature among many. If you remember Writesonic as a cheap word-based writer, that product is no longer what the pricing page offers.
What GEO is, and what to expect
GEO (generative engine optimisation), also called AEO, means improving the chance that AI assistants mention and cite your brand. Tools like Writesonic ask ChatGPT, Gemini and others a fixed set of questions every day and record the answers. Keep three limits in mind:
- Answers vary. The same question can get a different answer on the next run, so watch trends over weeks, not single days. Writesonic's own research banner says 52% of #1 positions rotate.
- Prompts are a sample. Your score reflects the prompts you chose. Tracking questions that name your brand makes visibility look higher than it is.
- Case studies are marketing. Writesonic's site quotes customers crediting it with large deals; treat these as vendor claims.
The basics still matter most: answer questions clearly, publish specific facts with sources, keep pages crawlable and earn mentions on sites AI engines already trust. Our best AI for SEO ranking compares other tracking tools.
Security and data
Writesonic says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, GDPR and HIPAA compliant, and hosted on Microsoft Azure. SSO/SAML and user access controls come with Enterprise. The platform needs access to your Google Search Console and analytics data to measure results, so check what you connect and who in your team can see it.
- Track the questions real buyers ask, such as "best CRM for small law firms", not questions that include your brand name. Branded prompts inflate your visibility score.
- Use the 7-day trial to record a baseline: your visibility, the competitors named and the sources cited. Without it you cannot prove later that anything improved.
- Connect Google Search Console and GA4 early, so you can see whether better AI visibility turns into visits and sign-ups.
- Edit every AI article and add first-hand data. Google's spam policies name using generative AI to publish many pages without adding value as scaled content abuse.
- Fix technical issues first. If robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, no amount of new content will get you cited.

Frequently asked questions
What is Writesonic used for now?
Mainly for tracking and improving how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention a brand. It combines that tracking with site audits, an AI article writer and AI agents that suggest and draft fixes.
Is Writesonic still an AI writer?
Yes, but the writer is now part of a bigger platform. Every plan includes a monthly article allowance (15 on Starter, 25 on Basic, 50 on Growth), and the pricing page no longer lists cheaper writing-only plans.
Is Writesonic free?
No. There is a 7-day free trial with no credit card, and Writesonic offers a 7-day no-questions refund on paid plans. Plans start at $99 a month, or $79 a month billed yearly. See our Writesonic pricing page.
Which AI platforms does Writesonic track?
Starter, Basic and Growth track ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Enterprise covers 10: those three plus Perplexity, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Google AI Mode.
Is Writesonic worth it for bloggers?
Usually not. You would pay at least $79 a month (billed yearly) mostly for tracking features a blogger does not need. Koala, Frase or a general assistant like ChatGPT cost far less for drafts. Compare them on our Writesonic alternatives page.
