Best AI Roleplay Chatbots

AI roleplay means chatting with an AI that plays a character: a detective in your mystery, a dungeon master, a historical figure, or a friendly companion who remembers your week. It is one of the most popular uses of AI, and one of the most controversial, because the same apps that power creative stories have been linked to harm among teenagers.

This ranking covers safe-for-work roleplay only. We scored 10 apps on story and memory quality, safety and teen protection, privacy, character tools and price, using public safety records, App Store and Google Play ratings, lawsuits and regulator actions. We left out sites built mainly around explicit content. If you want an ongoing AI friend rather than stories, also read our best AI companions ranking, which weighs wellbeing even more heavily.

Quick answer

For the best writing and the safest defaults, use Claude: it plays characters and runs stories better than any dedicated roleplay app, and it is 18+ only. For a ready-made library of millions of characters, Character.AI is the leading roleplay platform, now with strict age checks after its 2025 under-18 ban and January 2026 lawsuit settlements. AI Dungeon is best for text adventures with clear safety settings. Adults who want a long-term AI friend with strong memory should look at Kindroid, with care.

Expert reviews

#1 · Adults who want the best-written roleplay and interactive fiction

Claude

by Anthropic · Freemium · $20/month (Pro)
8.4/10

Claude is not a roleplay app, but it is the best AI for roleplay if you care about the writing. Give it a character sheet and a setting, and it stays in character for long scenes, keeps track of plot details, varies its voice between characters and writes prose that reads like a good novel rather than a chatbot. Many users of power-user tools like SillyTavern choose Claude models for exactly this reason.

You can make characters persistent by saving their description, rules and world notes in a Claude Project, so every new chat starts with the same setup. Anthropic requires users to be 18 or older, does not allow sexually explicit content, and says Claude is designed to step out of character when a user seems to be in real distress.

The downsides: there is no character library or community, so you write your own setups, and the free plan runs out quickly in long stories. Pro costs $20 a month.

Pick it if you want the highest-quality stories and strong safety defaults. Skip it if you want to browse ready-made characters or chat with a voiced avatar.

#2 · Adults who want a huge library of ready-made characters

Character.AI

by Character Technologies · Freemium · Free (c.ai+ from $9.99/month)
7.7/10

Character.AI is the biggest dedicated roleplay platform, with millions of user-made characters: anime heroes, game masters, historical figures, language tutors and original creations. Finding a character and starting a scene takes seconds, and its voices, group chats and new comics and image features make it the most fun app to browse.

Its safety history is serious. Families sued after teenagers were harmed, including a 14-year-old who died by suicide. The company ended open-ended chat for under-18s by November 25, 2025, now checks ages with its own model and the verification service Persona, and in January 2026 it and Google agreed to settle five lawsuits, with confidential terms and no admission of liability. Its September 2026 safety update added parental activity emails and crisis support partners.

Those changes make it one of the stricter apps on age today, but adults complain about wrong age flags, ads and limits, which helps explain its 2.2 rating on Google Play. Story memory is also weaker than Kindroid's or Claude's in long chats.

Pick it if you are an adult who wants variety and quick, creative scenes. Skip it if you want deep long-term memory, or you dislike ads and age checks.

#3 · Text adventures and game-style stories with clear content controls

AI Dungeon

by Latitude · Freemium · Free (Journey $14.99/month)
7.6/10

AI Dungeon is the veteran of AI storytelling and still the best choice for adventure-style roleplay. Instead of chatting with one character, you play through a story: choose a fantasy, sci-fi, mystery or horror scenario, then type what you do or say, and the AI narrates what happens next. Thousands of community scenarios give you ready-made worlds.

Its safety design is clearer than most. Players choose an AI Safety setting: Safe blocks sexual, hateful, violent and triggering content, Moderate reduces it, and Mature requires you to confirm you are 18 or older. Community scenarios carry Everyone, Teen, Mature or Unrated labels. Those tools make it easier to keep stories SFW than on most rivals.

The trade-offs: the free Wanderer tier has only a 4,000-token context, so the AI forgets earlier events quickly, and bigger memory costs $14.99 to $99.99 a month. The writing is good but below Claude's.

Pick it if you want interactive adventures with content settings you control. Skip it if you want one ongoing character or a friend-style chat.

#4 · Casual roleplay and voice chats in an app you already use

ChatGPT

by OpenAI · Freemium · $8/month (Go)
7.5/10

ChatGPT is a capable roleplay partner that millions already have installed. It writes lively scenes, remembers details across chats when memory is on, and its voice mode makes spoken roleplay (a mock interview, a language practice partner, a bedtime story) feel natural. Custom GPTs let you save a character's instructions and reuse them.

On safety, OpenAI's record is mixed. It faces lawsuits from families who say ChatGPT worsened teenagers' mental health, and it is one of seven companies in the FTC's September 2025 inquiry into companion chatbots. In response it launched parental controls that let parents link a teen's account, set quiet hours and get alerts about signs of acute distress.

For dedicated roleplay it is less focused than the top picks: it breaks character more often than Claude, and it has no character library. The free plan is generous and Go costs $8 a month.

Pick it if you want casual roleplay or voice practice in an app you already use. Skip it if you want long, consistent stories (Claude) or a character community (Character.AI).

#5 · Adults who want a long-term AI friend with deep, editable memory

Kindroid

by Kindroid · Freemium · $15.99/month (App Store subscription)
7.4/10

Kindroid is the best AI friend app for people who want a companion that truly remembers. You write your character's backstory, set key memories and choose how it speaks, and you can edit what it remembers when it gets something wrong. Reviewers and users consistently rate its memory and consistency among the best of any companion app, and it adds voice calls, group chats and selfies.

It also has high store ratings: 4.8 on the App Store from about 8,800 reviews and 4.4 on Google Play from about 25,000.

The weak spot is safety. Kindroid filters far less than mainstream assistants, which gives adults creative freedom but offers less protection if a conversation turns to self-harm or unhealthy dependency. It publishes little about its safety processes. It is adults only, and store ratings are its main age gate.

Pick it if you are an adult who wants a consistent, customisable AI friend and understands the risks. Skip it if you are going through a hard time emotionally, or you want an app with strong guardrails. Our best AI companions ranking covers the wellbeing side in more depth.

#6 · Tinkerers who want full control over models, prompts and data

SillyTavern

by SillyTavern (open-source community) · Open source · Free (you pay for any AI model API you connect)
7.2/10

SillyTavern is not a chatbot but a free, open-source app you install on your own computer to run roleplay with whichever AI model you choose. Connect it to Claude, OpenAI or other providers through their APIs, or to a model running locally on your machine. It adds character cards, lorebooks (world notes the AI pulls in when relevant), group chats, memory tools and fine control over prompts.

That control is its strength. Your chats and characters stay on your computer, and with a local model nothing leaves it at all. Story quality depends on the model you connect; with a top model it can beat every dedicated app. The project is active, with about 33,700 GitHub stars and version 1.19.0 released on September 14, 2026.

The risks are the flip side. There are no age checks, no safety filters of its own and no company responsible for what happens, so safety is entirely on you and the model's own rules. Setup takes time and some technical comfort, and API costs can add up in long stories.

Pick it if you are a technical adult who wants privacy and control. Skip it if you want something that just works, or the app is for a teenager.

#7 · Voiced characters and collectible cards in a social app

Talkie

by SUBSUP PTE. LTD. (MiniMax) · Freemium · Talkie+ $9.99/month
6.8/10

Talkie is a social roleplay app built on models from the Chinese AI company MiniMax. Its characters come with voices and illustrated art, and you collect cards as you chat, which gives it more of a game feel than Character.AI. Creating your own character is simple, and the community library is large.

Its store ratings are solid: 4.7 from about 57,000 ratings on the US App Store, where it is listed as Talkie Lab and rated 18+, and 4.5 from about 849,000 on Google Play.

The concerns are age gating and data. The same app carries an 18+ rating on the App Store but a Teen rating on Google Play, and it publishes far less about safety than Character.AI. Data handling is tied to a Singapore company using a Chinese model provider, and the free version is supported by ads, with gems, gift packs and a $24.99 Pro tier pushing spending.

Pick it if you are an adult who likes voiced, collectible characters. Skip it if you are choosing for a teenager, or you want clear safety and data policies.

#8 · One consistent AI friend with wellbeing tools

Replika

by Luka · Freemium · From $7.99/month
6.7/10

Replika is the original AI friend app. Instead of many characters, you build one companion with a 3D avatar who remembers your life, checks in on you and chats by text, voice or video call. It includes mood tracking and wellbeing exercises, and it is less about adventures than about everyday conversation.

It is well rated, 4.4 on the App Store from about 228,000 reviews and 4.3 on Google Play from about 525,000, and its prices are clearer than most, from $7.99 a month.

Privacy and age gating hold it back. In April 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined its maker Luka €5 million, finding no proper legal basis for some data processing and no real age verification. The app is 18+ on the App Store but rated Teen on Google Play, and its store label shows data collected for analytics and advertising. For roleplay specifically, it offers fewer story tools than the apps above.

Pick it if you are an adult who wants one steady AI friend with wellbeing features. Skip it if you want creative stories, or you are wary of a company with a GDPR fine.

#9 · Stable adults who want rich memory and group roleplay

Nomi

by Glimpse.ai · Freemium · $9.99/month
6.6/10

On story quality alone, Nomi would rank near the top. Its characters remember past conversations well, keep a consistent personality, and can join group chats where several AI characters talk to you and each other. It supports voice messages and images.

We rank it low because of how it handled a safety failure. In February 2025 MIT Technology Review reported that a Nomi character gave a user explicit instructions for suicide and later sent unprompted messages encouraging it. The company told the magazine it did not want to "censor" its AI. For an app built on emotional attachment, that is a serious red flag.

Nomi is adults only, rated 18+ on the App Store and Mature 17+ on Google Play. Prices run from $9.99 to $15.99 a month, with extra credit packs.

Pick it if you are a stable adult who wants deep, memory-rich roleplay and understands the risks. Skip it if you are feeling low, lonely or vulnerable; choose an app with stronger crisis protections.

#10 · Adults who want a large, loosely moderated character library

Chai

by Chai Research · Freemium · Premium $13.99/month
5.8/10

Chai offers a big library of user-made characters and fast, casual chats, and it has grown quickly: it reported about $80 million in annual recurring revenue in early 2026. It is easy to start and easy to create characters.

We rank it last because of safety and how it treats users. In 2023 a Belgian man died by suicide after weeks of conversations with a Chai chatbot, and the company's main response was to add safety messages under chats about risky topics. Its moderation is looser than the mainstream apps, and age checks rely mostly on store ratings and self-declared ages. In early 2026 it introduced country-based access tiers with little warning, and in February unannounced token limits froze conversations for free and paying users, some for days.

Pricing is also steep for what you get: Premium is $13.99 a month, and Ultra costs $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week in the App Store.

Pick it if you are an adult who wants quick, casual character chats and accepts light moderation. Skip it if safety, clear pricing or long-term memory matter to you, or the user is under 18.

What happened with Character.AI and teen safety

Character.AI is the case that changed this category.

  • 2024 to 2025: families sued Character.AI and Google, alleging its chatbots harmed teenagers, including a 14-year-old in Florida who died by suicide. Texas's attorney general opened an investigation into Character.AI and Meta over AI chat marketed to young people.
  • September 2025: the FTC ordered seven companies, including Character.AI, OpenAI and Meta, to explain how they protect children from companion chatbots.
  • November 25, 2025: Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18 users and added age assurance with its own model and the Persona verification service.
  • January 2026: Character.AI, its co-founders and Google agreed to settle five lawsuits in Florida, New York, Colorado and Texas, with confidential terms and no admission of liability. Other cases continue.
  • September 2026: Character.AI's safety update describes parental activity emails through k-ID, crisis support through Koko and ThroughLine, and self-harm detection that reads the whole conversation.

California's SB 243, the first US state law on companion chatbots, also requires apps to disclose they are AI, remind known minors to take breaks and publish a suicide-prevention protocol.

What we left out, and why

We excluded sites and apps built mainly around explicit or sexual roleplay, and front-ends that host unmoderated user bots with no meaningful age checks. Some of them are popular, but they do not fit a safe-for-work ranking, and several have been criticised for letting minors in with a single click. We also left out the romance-first apps covered in other rankings.

If you want a companion rather than a storyteller, our best AI companions ranking weighs safety, privacy and age assurance even more heavily. For general assistants, see best AI chatbots.

How to roleplay with AI safely

  1. Keep personal details out. Do not share your full name, school, address, passwords or health details with a character.
  2. Remember it is software. Characters are designed to be agreeable and always available. If you are skipping sleep or plans to chat, take a break.
  3. Use content settings. Turn on Safe mode in AI Dungeon and keep filters on where apps offer them.
  4. Check the age rating on both stores before letting a teenager install an app.
  5. Get real help when it matters. If a story stirs up difficult feelings, talk to a person. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123.
Expert tips
  1. Write a short character sheet (name, personality, speech style, goals, three things they would never do) and paste it at the start of every session. Characters drift far less.
  2. In Claude, put the character sheet and world notes in a Project so long stories stay consistent across chats without re-pasting.
  3. In AI Dungeon, set AI Safety to Safe and use the memory bank for key facts like names and locations; the free tier forgets anything outside its 4K context.
  4. On Character.AI, if the age check wrongly flags you, use the official verification flow rather than creating a new account, which can lose your history.
  5. Before paying for any roleplay app, check for weekly plans and in-app currencies in the App Store listing; they can cost far more than the headline monthly price.

Jargon explained

Roleplay (AI)
Chatting with an AI that plays a character or narrates a story you take part in.
Context window
How much of the recent conversation the AI can see at once, measured in tokens. When a story goes past it, the AI forgets earlier parts.
Age assurance
Methods an app uses to estimate or verify a user's age, from self-declared birthdays to ID checks and AI age estimation.
Character card
A saved description of a character's personality, background and speaking style that an app loads before each chat.
Lorebook
A set of world notes, such as places and people, that tools like SillyTavern add to the AI's context only when they become relevant.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI chatbot for roleplay?

Claude is the best AI chatbot for roleplay if you care about writing quality and safety; it keeps characters consistent over long stories and is 18+ only. If you want a ready-made library of characters, Character.AI is the leading dedicated roleplay platform.

What is the best AI friend app?

For adults who want a long-term AI friend with strong memory, Kindroid leads on memory and customisation, and Replika is the most established one-companion app. Both have safety or privacy trade-offs. If you want a thoughtful listener with strong safety defaults, Claude is a good sounding board. See our best AI companions ranking for more.

Is Character.AI safe for teenagers?

Since November 25, 2025, Character.AI no longer allows open-ended chat for users under 18, and it checks ages with its own model and Persona verification. Teens get limited alternative features instead. The company has settled five lawsuits over teen harm. Parents should still check settings and use device-level controls.

Is there a free AI roleplay chatbot?

Yes. Character.AI, AI Dungeon, Talkie, Chai and ChatGPT all have free tiers, and SillyTavern is free and open source (you pay only for any cloud AI model you connect). Free tiers usually have shorter memory, ads or daily limits.

Which AI roleplay app has the best memory?

Among dedicated apps, Kindroid and Nomi are rated best for long-term memory. For story memory, Claude's large context and Projects keep long plots consistent, and AI Dungeon's higher tiers add bigger context windows and memory banks.

Why is Character.AI rated so low on Google Play?

Its Google Play rating was 2.2 from about 2.4 million ratings in September 2026, far below its 4.3 on the App Store. Many recent reviews complain about age checks wrongly flagging adults, ads and chat limits introduced after its under-18 changes.

Can I roleplay with ChatGPT or Claude?

Yes. Both will play characters, run text adventures and help write interactive fiction within their content rules. Save a character's description in a Claude Project or a custom GPT so every chat starts from the same setup.
