Image & DesignBest AI Landscape and Garden Design Tools
Also known as: AI garden design
AI landscape design tools let you photograph your yard and see it redone in seconds: new beds, a patio, a path, a pergola. Others help you draw a scaled garden plan and preview it in 3D. Both are useful for deciding what you want before you pay a landscaper or buy plants.
What they cannot do is just as important. An AI picture does not know your plant hardiness zone, how many hours of sun each bed gets, where water pools after rain, where the gas line runs, or what your city and HOA allow. It will happily draw a palm tree in a Minnesota front yard. We ranked 8 tools on how realistic the redesign looks, how accurate the plan is, whether they use real plants and products, ease of use and price, and we explain the checks to do before you dig. Prices are in US dollars as of 26 September 2026. For indoor rooms, see our best AI interior design tools.
Quick answerPlanner 5D is the best AI landscape and garden design tool for most homeowners in September 2026. Its free garden planner draws a scaled 2D plan with 3D preview, and its AI Studio adds photo-real landscape concepts; Premium is $59.99 a year. Pros should look at PRO Landscape+ ($900/year, Windows) for CAD, takeoffs and AI presentations. For a quick makeover of a yard photo, Gemini or ChatGPT do it for free, and iScape lets you place real plants on your own photo.

Expert reviews
Planner 5D is best known for home and floor plans, but its garden planner is one of the most useful free tools for a yard. You mark out the shape of your plot, then drag in lawn areas, beds, paths, patios, decks, furniture and plants, set their sizes, and switch to a 3D view to walk around the result. Because you work to real dimensions, the plan tells you how big a patio can be and how many feet of edging you need.
The AI side lives in AI Studio, a canvas that works from a photo, sketch or plan and uses image models such as Nano Banana, GPT Image and Seedream. Planner 5D lists landscape concepts among its uses, so you can turn a plan or a yard photo into photo-real ideas.
The plant catalogue is generic. It shows shapes and sizes, not whether a shrub survives your winters, so check hardiness yourself. The free plan unlocks half the catalogue; Premium costs $59.99 a year.
Pick it if you want a plan you can measure and share with a contractor. Skip it if you only want a quick before-and-after picture.
What we like
- Free garden planner with real dimensions and 3D preview
- AI Studio turns plans, sketches or photos into concepts
- Cheap Premium plan at $59.99 a year
- Works on web, phone and desktop
Watch out for
- Plant library shows shapes, not climate suitability
- Free plan unlocks only half the catalogue
- Garden tools are less specialised than pro landscape software
PRO Landscape+ is professional landscape software that has added AI on top of a traditional toolset. You take a customer photo, erase the old planting with the AI Eraser, and build the new design with photo imaging or scaled CAD. The software produces material takeoffs, lighting plans, 3D scenes and a proposal with prices.
The AI suite is sensible. It enhances presentation images while keeping your layout and plant choices, generates patios, outdoor kitchens, fire pits and pergolas from a photo using more than 1,000 real hardscape patterns, and cuts out objects so you can add them to a scene. The company's line is that you create the design and AI improves the presentation, which is the right order for work that has to be built.
The cost and setup rule out most homeowners. It is $900 a year (or $90 a month), runs only on Windows 10 or 11, and the company does not offer refunds.
Pick it if you design, quote and install landscapes for a living. Skip it if you are planning one backyard; Planner 5D or iScape cost far less.
What we like
- Scaled CAD, takeoffs and proposals in one package
- AI Eraser and AI concepts save hours of photo editing
- Uses real hardscape patterns from manufacturers
- Companion tablet app for on-site design
Watch out for
- $900 a year is steep for homeowners
- Windows only, and no refunds
- Steeper learning curve than phone apps
Gemini is the easiest free way to see a new yard. Upload a photo of your garden, then ask for what you want: "replace the lawn with a gravel seating area and native perennials, keep the fence and the maple tree". Its image model (Nano Banana) edits the photo while keeping the house and the shape of the yard, and you can keep refining in plain English.
Gemini can also talk through the practical side. Ask which plants suit your ZIP code, how much sun a north-facing bed gets, or how to deal with a soggy corner, and you get a sensible starting point. Treat plant advice as a draft and check it against the USDA hardiness map and your local extension service, because a chatbot can be confidently wrong.
It does not produce a scaled plan, plant counts or a materials list, and every image is an idea, not a drawing a contractor can build from. Turn off Keep Activity if you would rather your photos were not saved or reviewed.
Pick it if you want free, fast ideas for your own yard. Skip it if you need measurements.
What we like
- Free photo redesigns that keep your house and yard shape
- Follow-up edits in plain English
- Can discuss plants, sun and drainage in the same chat
- Google AI Plus is only $4.99 a month
Watch out for
- No scaled plan, quantities or materials list
- Plant suggestions need checking against local sources
- Photos can be saved and reviewed while Keep Activity is on
iScape is the long-running landscape app that many contractors and DIY homeowners use to show an idea on a photo of the actual yard. You draw over the photo with a virtual pen, remove areas, and drop in plants, trees, grass, pavers, furniture and lighting from a library of thousands of real items. In augmented reality (3D) mode on supported devices, you can see the design in place through your phone.
Its biggest advantage is that everything is real. Because you pick actual plants and products, iScape builds an inventory of what you used, and Pro users can turn it into a PDF proposal with prices.
It is not generative AI yet. iScape's FAQ says an AI landscaping feature is coming in beta, so today you do the designing. Results look more like a photo collage than a glossy render, and the free version limits the plant and product database. Pro costs $29.99 a month or $299.99 a year.
Pick it if you want a design you can actually shop for and build. Skip it if you want instant AI makeovers; try Gemini or HomeDesignsAI.
What we like
- Uses real plants and hardscape products
- Automatic inventory, plus PDF proposals on Pro
- Augmented reality view on your own yard
- Well rated: 4.6/5 from 28,866 App Store ratings
Watch out for
- No generative AI yet; you place every item
- Pro is $29.99 a month
- Free version limits the plant and product database
ChatGPT does two useful jobs for a garden project. First, upload a photo of your yard and ask for a redesign; Images 2.5 (launched 8 September 2026) keeps the house and boundaries and lets you mark a single area with an image comment to change just that bed or path. Second, it can write the plan around the picture: a planting list, a rough order of work, questions to ask landscapers, and a simple budget template.
That second part is where it beats photo-only apps, but it needs checking. ChatGPT does not know your soil, your exact microclimate or your local rules, and it can invent plant varieties or recommend something invasive in your area. Cross-check every plant against the USDA hardiness map and your state extension service.
Like Gemini, it gives you no scaled drawing, and plant quantities are guesses unless you give it real measurements. Turn off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want your photos used for training.
Pick it if you already use ChatGPT and want ideas plus a written plan. Skip it if you need a drawing to build from.
What we like
- Photo redesign and a written project plan in one chat
- Area-specific edits with image comments
- Works on the free plan
- Good at turning your measurements into lists and budgets
Watch out for
- No scaled plan or accurate quantities
- Can suggest unsuitable or invasive plants
- Photos may be used for training unless you opt out
HomeDesignsAI is a general AI home design app with a strong landscaping mode. You upload one photo of a backyard, front yard, garden or patio, choose a style (Japanese, Mediterranean, modern and many more) and get a realistic redesign in under a minute. The company says it keeps your real walls, windows and yard layout and changes only the design, which matches what we expect from photo-based tools.
It is quick to compare looks side by side, and the paid plans include a commercial licence with no watermark, which suits landscapers who want to show clients options before a site visit.
What you get is a picture. There are no dimensions, plant names you can buy, or quantities, and the planting in the render may not suit your climate. Pricing is also easy to misread: Standard is $22 a month for 100 designs, and Pro at $29 gives 10 times as many credits, so Pro is the better deal. Yearly plans renew at a higher standard price after the first year.
Pick it if you want many polished garden ideas fast. Skip it if you need a plan or plant list.
What we like
- Very realistic redesigns that keep your house and yard
- Dozens of garden and patio styles
- Commercial licence on paid plans
- Pro gives 1,000 credits for $29 a month
Watch out for
- No measurements, plant names or quantities
- Render plants may not suit your climate
- Yearly plans renew at a higher price after year one
REimagineHome is best known for virtual staging, and it also has an AI landscaping mode for yards, gardens, patios, rooftops and balconies. You upload an outdoor photo, the AI reads the existing layout, light and planting, and you describe what you want, such as "add plants and flowers so this feels like a cozy backyard".
It suits estate agents in particular. A bare or tired yard can be shown as a finished garden for a listing, and the Pro plan adds batch processing for listings, conversational edits and reference photos. If you use it for a listing, label the image as a virtual rendering; buyers should not mistake it for the real yard.
The limits match other photo tools: no measurements, no buyable plant list, and no knowledge of drainage or local rules. The Essential plan ($19 a month for 30 credits) only covers basic landscaping edits and lacks the newer AI, so most people who use it seriously end up on Pro at $36.
Pick it if you market homes and want better curb appeal images. Skip it if you are planning a real build.
What we like
- 5 free designs with no card
- Good landscaping edits for listing photos
- Pro adds batch listing processing and reference photos
- Works for rooftops and balconies too
Watch out for
- Essential plan lacks the newer AI and conversational edits
- No plans, measurements or plant lists
- Credits run out fast on the $19 plan
AI Garden Design is one of the most popular phone apps that does one thing: upload a photo of your garden, patio, rooftop or front yard, pick one of 10+ styles, and see it redone with new beds, paths, seating and furniture. The App Store description also mentions tools to move paths, greenery and seating around, and to restyle walls, flooring, pergolas and pools.
The results are attractive and fast, and the app is well rated (4.6 out of 5 from 8,154 US ratings). It is a good way to settle a debate about style before you talk to a designer.
Watch the pricing. The yearly plan at $59.99 is fair, but weekly subscriptions of $7.99 or more add up to over $400 a year if you forget to cancel. The App Store privacy label also says identifiers may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. As with every photo app, there are no measurements or real plant lists.
Pick it if you want quick inspiration on your phone. Skip it if you dislike weekly subscriptions or need a real plan.
What we like
- Fast, attractive redesigns from one photo
- Works for small spaces like balconies and rooftops
- Well rated on the App Store
- $59.99 a year is reasonable
Watch out for
- Weekly subscriptions are expensive over time
- Identifiers may be used for cross-app tracking
- iPhone only; no plans or plant lists

A sensible path for most homeowners: generate a few AI makeovers to pick a style, draw a scaled plan in Planner 5D, check plants against your hardiness zone, then get quotes. If the project involves grading, drainage or structures, pay for a designer. Yardzen, an online landscape design service that uses human designers, lists backyard packages from $995 to $1,995.

Privacy: what happens to photos of your home
A yard photo often shows your house number, car, windows and sometimes your children. Before uploading:
- ChatGPT: turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data Controls so new chats are not used for training.
- Gemini: with Keep Activity on, chats and uploaded photos are saved (18 months by default) and a subset is reviewed by humans. With it off, Google keeps chats for 72 hours.
- Phone apps: check the App Store privacy label. AI Garden Design's label lists identifiers that may be used to track you across other companies' apps; iScape's lists identifiers and usage data.
Crop out house numbers and number plates, and avoid photos with people in them.
Expert tips- Take your yard photo at the height of a person, in soft daylight, with the whole area in frame. AI tools keep what they can see, so a clear photo gives a design that matches your real yard.
- Tell the AI what must stay: "keep the fence, the oak tree and the driveway exactly as they are". Otherwise it may quietly remove them.
- Look up your zone on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map and add it to every prompt ("plants hardy to zone 6a"). Then double-check each plant name yourself.
- Measure your yard with a tape or a free map tool before planning, and enter the numbers into Planner 5D. A render without measurements cannot tell you if a patio set will fit.
- Contact 811 a few business days before digging, even for planting beds. Some utility lines are buried only inches deep.
Jargon explained
- Hardiness zone
- A USDA map area based on the average coldest winter temperature. Plants are labelled with the zones where they survive winter.
- Hardscape
- The non-living parts of a garden, such as patios, paths, walls, steps and pergolas.
- Softscape
- The living parts of a garden: plants, trees, shrubs and lawn.
- Takeoff
- A list of the materials and quantities a design needs, such as square feet of pavers or number of shrubs, used for quotes.
- 811
- The free US before-you-dig number. Utility companies mark buried lines so you do not hit them.
- Augmented reality (AR)
- Showing digital objects, like plants or furniture, on top of the live view from your phone camera.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI landscape design tool in 2026?
Planner 5D for most homeowners: a free scaled garden planner with 3D preview plus AI Studio for landscape concepts, with Premium at $59.99 a year. Professionals should look at PRO Landscape+. For a free photo makeover, use Gemini or ChatGPT.
Can AI design my backyard from a photo?
Yes. Gemini, ChatGPT, HomeDesignsAI, REimagineHome and AI Garden Design all redesign a photo of your own yard in seconds. The result is an idea, not a plan: it has no measurements, and the plants shown may not suit your climate.
Is there a free AI garden design app?
Gemini and ChatGPT redesign yard photos on their free plans. Planner 5D's garden planner is free with half its catalogue, iScape has a limited free version, and REimagineHome gives 5 free designs.
Do AI garden tools know which plants will grow in my area?
Not reliably. Photo tools draw plants that look right, not plants that survive your winters, soil or sun. Check every choice against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map and your state's cooperative extension service or a local nursery.
Can I use an AI design to get a permit?
No. AI renders are not scaled construction drawings. Retaining walls, decks, fences, pools and grading may need permits, stamped drawings or HOA approval. Contact your local building department, and call 811 before any digging.
What is the best landscape design app for professionals?
PRO Landscape+ ($900/year) combines photo imaging, CAD, 3D, lighting, takeoffs and proposals with AI tools. iScape Pro ($299.99/year) is a cheaper tablet-first option with real products and PDF proposals.
Is it worth paying a landscape designer instead?
For simple planting or a small patio, AI tools and a scaled planner are usually enough. For slopes, drainage problems, retaining walls or a full-yard build, a designer pays for themselves. Online services such as Yardzen list backyard packages from $995.
