AI Assistants & Agents

Best AI Apps for Android

Android is the easiest place to use AI on a phone. Gemini has replaced Google Assistant as the default helper on most new phones, Circle to Search lets you look up anything on screen with one gesture, and Samsung adds its own Galaxy AI features on top. Then there is the Play Store, where almost every AI company ships its best mobile app.

This 2026 list ranks 11 AI apps and built-in features for Android on everyday usefulness, how deeply they plug into Android, ease of use, value and privacy. Google Play ratings and counts are from the US store as of September 23, 2026. If you also use an iPhone, see our best AI apps for iPhone ranking.

Quick answer

Gemini is the best AI app for Android: it is built into the phone, can act in Google apps, and has a strong free tier. Pair it with ChatGPT (rated 4.8 from about 61.6 million Play reviews) for the best general chatbot, and use Circle to Search to look up anything on screen. Samsung owners also get Galaxy AI features free. Add Perplexity for sourced answers or Claude for writing.

Expert reviews

#1 · Every Android user, especially anyone who uses Gmail, Maps and Google Photos

Gemini

by Google · Freemium · $4.99/month (Google AI Plus)
8.9/10

Gemini is the best AI app for Android because it is not really just an app. On most new Android phones it has replaced Google Assistant, so a long press of the power button or "Hey Google" opens it over whatever you are doing. From there it can read your screen, add events to Calendar, find an email in Gmail, plan a route in Maps or pull photos from Google Photos.

Gemini Live, its voice mode, lets you share your camera or screen and talk through what you see, and it works on Wear OS watches and in Android Auto too. The free tier is strong, and Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month adds more AI plus 400 GB of storage. Its Google Play rating is 4.6 from about 46.7 million reviews.

The main downside is privacy. Gemini works best when it can see your Google data, and human reviewers may read some chats unless you turn off Gemini Apps Activity. Some users also miss old Assistant routines that do not work the same way yet.

Pick it if you have an Android phone; it is already the best-integrated assistant. Skip it if you avoid Google services or want the strongest pure chatbot, where ChatGPT still edges it.

#2 · The best general chatbot for questions, voice, photos and writing

ChatGPT

by OpenAI · Freemium · $8/month (Go)
8.6/10

ChatGPT is the best pure chatbot on Android, and its Google Play numbers show how popular it is: a 4.8 rating from about 61.6 million reviews and more than a billion downloads. Its voice mode is the most natural of any assistant, the camera features explain whatever you point at, and memory carries your preferences across chats.

It also does more than most people use it for: image creation, file analysis, web search with sources, and agent tasks that browse and fill in forms for you. You can set it as your default digital assistant in Android settings, so a long press of the power button opens it instead of Gemini.

Where it trails Gemini is in reaching into your phone. It cannot read your Gmail or set Android alarms the way Google's assistant can. On privacy, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" if you do not want your chats used for training.

Pick it if you want the smartest general assistant on your phone. Skip it if you want one assistant that controls your Google apps and phone settings; Gemini does that better.

#4 · Galaxy phone owners who want calls, photos and translation handled by AI

Samsung Galaxy AI

by Samsung · Free · Free on supported Galaxy devices
8.3/10

If you own a recent Samsung phone, Galaxy AI adds some of the most practical AI features on any phone, and Samsung has now said its basic features will stay free. Live Translate works inside phone calls, Interpreter handles face-to-face conversations, Note Assist and Transcript Assist tidy up notes and recordings, and Photo Assist edits pictures from a text request.

The Galaxy S26, launched in February 2026, added Call Screening (on-device AI answers unknown callers for you), Creative Studio for stickers and wallpapers, and Advanced Audio Eraser, which cuts background noise in videos in real time. The One UI 8.5 update brought these to the Galaxy S24, S25 and recent foldables. Samsung also builds in three assistants: an upgraded Bixby with web search, Gemini, and on the S26, Perplexity with its own "Hey Plex" wake phrase.

The drawbacks: features depend on your model, region and carrier, older Galaxy phones get fewer tools, and having three assistants can be confusing.

Pick it if you have a Galaxy S24 or newer; explore the Galaxy AI menu in Settings. Skip it if you use a Pixel or another brand, where Gemini and Circle to Search cover most of the same ground.

#5 · Quick answers with sources, as your default assistant if you like

Perplexity

by Perplexity AI · Freemium · $20/month (Pro)
8.2/10

Perplexity is the best Android AI app for looking things up. Every answer comes with numbered links to its sources, so you can check prices, news, opening times and product specs rather than trusting a chatbot's memory.

On Android it goes further than on iPhone. You can set Perplexity as your default digital assistant, so it opens from the power button or gesture and can take simple actions like setting reminders or playing music. On the Galaxy S26 it comes preloaded with its own "Hey Plex" wake phrase and can work with Samsung Notes, Calendar, Gallery and Reminders. Its Play rating is 4.6 from about 2.1 million reviews.

The limits: it is weaker than ChatGPT or Claude at long writing and creative tasks, advanced modes are limited on the free plan, and publishers including The New York Times and Dow Jones have sued it over how it uses their content. Open a source before relying on a key fact.

Pick it if you mostly use AI as a smarter search engine. Skip it if you need a writing partner. See our best AI search engines ranking for alternatives.

#6 · Writing, editing and reading long documents on your phone

Claude

by Anthropic · Freemium · $20/month (Pro)
8.1/10

Claude is the best Android app for anything built on words: rewriting an email, explaining a contract, summarising a long PDF or thinking through a hard decision. Its answers are careful and clear, and the newest model, Claude Opus 5.5, arrived on September 22, 2026.

The Android app supports voice conversations and photo and file uploads. Anthropic requires users to be 18 or older and lets you opt out of training on your chats, so it is a good choice for sensitive topics. Its Play rating is 4.5 from about 750,000 reviews, a little below ChatGPT's and Gemini's.

The weaknesses on Android: it cannot act as deeply in your phone as Gemini, it has no image generation, and the free plan runs out faster than rivals'. Heavy users will need Pro at $20 a month.

Pick it if writing, studying or document work is your main use. Skip it if you want a phone assistant that controls apps and settings, or a generous free plan.

#7 · Students and researchers studying their own files

Gemini Notebook

by Google · Freemium · Free
8.0/10

Gemini Notebook, called NotebookLM until July 2026, is the best study app on Android. You add your own sources, such as PDFs, lecture slides, web links, YouTube videos or notes, and it answers questions only from those sources, with citations to the exact passage. That makes it far less likely to invent facts than a general chatbot.

Its Audio Overviews turn your material into a podcast-style chat between two AI hosts, which is ideal for revising on the bus. It also creates study guides, flashcards, quizzes and mind maps. On Android you can share a PDF or link straight into a notebook from any app. The Play rating is 4.7 from about 324,000 reviews.

The limits: it is not a general assistant, and the free plan allows three audio overviews a day. Paying for Google AI Plus or Pro raises the limits.

Pick it if you study, research or need to learn a stack of documents fast. Skip it if you want general answers; use Gemini or ChatGPT. Our best AI study tools ranking has more options.

#8 · Microsoft 365 users who edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files on the go

Microsoft Copilot

by Microsoft · Freemium · $9.99/month (Microsoft 365 Personal)
7.7/10

Microsoft Copilot on Android is now mainly a work app. Microsoft is merging its consumer and work Copilot apps, and the Play Store listing that used to be the Microsoft 365 (Office) app now carries the Copilot name. It links to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, so you can draft a document, summarise an email thread or analyse a spreadsheet and then open the file in Office.

For people who already pay for Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, the bundle is good value: Office apps, 1 TB of cloud storage and Copilot from $9.99 a month. Business users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence get answers grounded in their company's files and email.

The drawbacks: as a general chatbot it trails ChatGPT and Gemini, Microsoft retired some consumer features in August 2026, and the app is changing quickly during the merger. Much of its 9.2 million-rating total comes from the old Office app.

Pick it if you live in Microsoft 365. Skip it if you want the best standalone chatbot; ChatGPT or Gemini are stronger.

#9 · Typing by voice in any Android app

Wispr Flow

by Wispr · Freemium · $12/month (Pro, billed yearly)
7.6/10

Wispr Flow is the most useful single-purpose AI app on Android if you write a lot on your phone. It works in any app through a floating dictation bubble: speak naturally, including false starts and corrections, and it types clean, punctuated text. Change your mind mid-sentence and it edits the sentence rather than transcribing your correction.

It supports more than 100 languages and keeps a personal dictionary for names and jargon that syncs with its desktop apps on Windows and Mac. The Android version is newer than the iPhone one and has fewer ratings, 4.5 from about 8,900, but reviews praise its accuracy compared with Gboard's built-in voice typing.

The drawbacks: the free plan allows only 1,000 words a week on mobile, Pro costs $12 to $15 a month, and your voice is processed in the cloud. Gboard's free voice typing is good enough for short messages.

Pick it if you dictate long messages, emails or notes every day. Skip it if you only speak the odd text; Gboard is free.

#10 · Free image creation and Meta AI glasses owners

Meta AI

by Meta · Freemium · Free (Meta One Core $7.99/month)
7.5/10

Meta AI is a capable free assistant with two standout uses: making images and short videos, and running Meta's AI glasses, which you pair and manage through this app. It runs on Meta's Muse Spark models, handles everyday questions well and supports voice chat in 13 languages. The same assistant also appears inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger on your phone.

The core chat is free. Meta One Core ($7.99 a month) and Premium ($19.99), launched on September 15, 2026, add more image and video creation and perks across Meta's apps. The Play rating is 4.6 from about 2.5 million reviews.

Privacy is its weak spot. Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses your Meta AI chats to personalise content and ads across its apps, with no opt-out outside the EU, the UK and South Korea, although it says it excludes sensitive topics such as health.

Pick it if you own Meta glasses or want free image generation. Skip it if privacy matters most; Claude or Gemini with activity turned off are better choices.

#11 · Recording and transcribing lectures, interviews and meetings

Otter.ai

by Otter.ai · Freemium · Free (300 min/month); Pro $8.33/month annual
7.4/10

Otter turns your Android phone into a smart voice recorder. Hit record in a lecture, interview or meeting and it transcribes live, labels speakers, and then writes a summary with action items. You can search every recording by keyword or ask its AI chat questions about what was said. The Play rating is 4.8 from about 44,000 reviews.

The free plan gives 300 minutes a month, and Pro costs $8.33 a month on annual billing for 1,200 minutes, which is cheap for students and reporters. It also joins Zoom, Google Meet and Teams calls from your account.

The drawbacks: summaries are less polished than newer rivals like Granola, the meeting bot joins calls by default, and Otter faces a 2025 US class action over recording people without their consent. Always tell people you are recording.

Pick it if you record lots of lectures or interviews on your phone. Skip it if you only need occasional notes; Samsung's Transcript Assist or Pixel's Recorder app may already do the job for free. See our AI for meetings ranking for more.

Built-in AI: Pixel, Samsung and other Android phones

Before installing anything, check what your phone already has.

  • Every recent Android phone: Gemini as the default assistant, plus Circle to Search on supported models.
  • Google Pixel: the newest Circle to Search and Gemini features often arrive on Pixel first; the February 2026 multi-object search launched on the Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26.
  • Samsung Galaxy S24, S25, S26 and recent foldables: Galaxy AI with Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, Photo Assist and, on One UI 8.5, Call Screening and Creative Studio. Samsung says basic Galaxy AI features are free.
  • Galaxy S26: Bixby with web search, Gemini and Perplexity are all built in.

You can change your default assistant in Settings, then Apps, then Default apps, then Digital assistant app. Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity all support this.

Which AI app should you install?

  • Just one app: Gemini is already on your phone; add ChatGPT if you want the strongest chatbot.
  • You write for work or school: Claude.
  • You mostly look things up: Perplexity.
  • You study from PDFs and slides: Gemini Notebook.
  • You dictate a lot: Wispr Flow.
  • You pay for Microsoft 365: Microsoft Copilot.
  • You own Meta glasses: Meta AI.

A free kit that covers most needs: Gemini, ChatGPT's free plan, Circle to Search and Gemini Notebook. See our best AI apps and best AI chatbots rankings for cross-platform picks.

Privacy tips for AI apps on Android

  1. Read the Data safety section on each app's Play Store page. It lists what data is collected and shared.
  2. Turn off Gemini Apps Activity (in your Google account) if you do not want chats saved and possibly reviewed by humans.
  3. Turn off training in ChatGPT and Claude settings for personal or work chats.
  4. Check app permissions in Settings, then Apps. Revoke microphone, camera or screen access that an app does not need.
  5. Use Google Family Link to control which AI apps children can install. Claude requires users to be 18 or older.
Expert tips
  1. Change your default assistant in Settings, then Apps, then Default apps, then Digital assistant app, if you prefer ChatGPT or Perplexity to Gemini on the power button.
  2. On a Galaxy phone, open Settings, then Galaxy AI, and turn on 'Process data only on device' for supported features if you want them to stay offline.
  3. Use Circle to Search on screenshots of foreign-language menus or signs: circle the text and tap Translate for an instant overlay.
  4. Share PDFs straight from your Files or Gmail app into Gemini Notebook, then generate an Audio Overview to revise while commuting.
  5. Subscribe on the vendor's website rather than through Google Play where possible; web and yearly prices are often lower.

Jargon explained

Default digital assistant
The app that opens when you long press the power button or say the wake word. On most Android phones it is Gemini, but you can change it.
Circle to Search
A Google feature that lets you circle anything on your screen to search for it or ask a question about it.
Galaxy AI
Samsung's set of AI features on Galaxy phones, such as Live Translate, Call Screening and Photo Assist.
On-device AI
AI that runs on your phone's own chip instead of a company's servers, so your data does not leave the device.
One UI
Samsung's version of Android. One UI 8.5 brought Galaxy S26 AI features to some older Galaxy phones.

Gemini is the best AI app for Android in 2026 because it is built into the phone as the default assistant and works with Gmail, Maps, Calendar and Photos. For the best general chatbot, add ChatGPT, rated 4.8 from about 61.6 million Google Play reviews.

Is Samsung Galaxy AI free?

Yes, for basic features. In January 2026 Samsung updated its wording to say Galaxy AI basic features provided by Samsung are free. It left room for future paid enhanced features, and AI features from third parties like Google can have separate terms.

Can I replace Gemini with ChatGPT or Perplexity on Android?

Yes. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Default apps, then Digital assistant app, and choose ChatGPT or Perplexity. The power button or assistant gesture will then open that app instead of Gemini, though some Google-specific actions will not work.

What is Circle to Search?

Circle to Search is a Google feature on supported Android phones. Long press the home button or navigation bar, then circle anything on screen to search it or ask about it. Since February 2026 you can circle several objects at once on the newest phones.

What is the best free AI app for Android?

Gemini and ChatGPT have the strongest free tiers. Circle to Search, Google Lens and Gemini Notebook are also free, and Samsung owners get Galaxy AI basic features at no cost. See our best free AI tools ranking for more.

Which Android AI app is best for privacy?

Claude has the strongest privacy defaults of the major chatbots, with an 18+ age limit and training opt-outs. Samsung's on-device Galaxy AI features, such as Call Screening, process data on the phone. Meta AI is the weakest, because Meta uses AI chats to personalise ads.
