AI Assistants & Agents

Best AI Apps for iPhone

Your iPhone got a lot smarter on September 14, 2026, when Apple shipped iOS 27 with a rebuilt Siri. But Apple's own AI still does not replace a good assistant app. Most people get the best results by pairing Apple Intelligence with one or two AI apps from the App Store.

We ranked 11 AI apps for iPhone on how useful they are day to day, how well they fit into iOS (Siri, Shortcuts, widgets, the Action button), what the free version gives you, privacy, and what real users say. App Store ratings and counts are from the US store as of September 23, 2026. For the same apps on Google phones, see our best AI apps for Android ranking.

Quick answer

Install ChatGPT first: it is the best all-round AI app on iPhone, rated 4.8 from about 11 million App Store ratings, and it is the chatbot built into Apple Intelligence. Keep Apple's Siri AI (iOS 27, iPhone 15 Pro or newer) for quick on-device tasks. Add Gemini if you use Google apps, Claude for writing and documents, or Perplexity for sourced answers. Wispr Flow is the best single-purpose pick for dictation.

#1 · Everyone's first AI app: questions, voice chat, photos and writing

ChatGPT

by OpenAI · Freemium · $8/month (Go)
8.9/10

ChatGPT is the best AI app for iPhone because it is good at almost everything and easy to reach. Its voice mode is the most natural way to talk to an AI on a phone. Point the camera at a menu, a broken bike part or a maths problem and it explains what it sees. Memory lets it carry your preferences from chat to chat.

It also fits iOS better than any rival. ChatGPT is built into Apple Intelligence, so Siri and Writing Tools can hand harder requests to it, and it was the only third-party extension working when iOS 27 launched. You can also map it to the Action button or run it from Shortcuts.

The free plan is generous, and Go at $8 a month is the cheapest paid tier among the big assistants. The main caution is privacy: turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in settings if you do not want your chats used for training.

Pick it if you want one AI app that does it all. Skip it if you mainly need writing help (Claude is stronger) or you live in Google's apps (try Gemini).

#2 · iPhone owners who use Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Photos

Gemini

by Google · Freemium · $4.99/month (Google AI Plus)
8.4/10

Gemini is the strongest alternative to ChatGPT on iPhone, and the better choice if your life runs on Google. It can pull in your Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube and Google Photos, so you can ask things like "when is my flight and how long is the drive to the airport?" and get one answer. Gemini Live, its voice mode, lets you share your camera or screen and talk through what you see.

Value is excellent. The free version is strong, and Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month bundles more AI with 400 GB of cloud storage, which many people were going to buy anyway.

On iPhone, though, Gemini is a guest. It cannot replace Siri as your default assistant, and at iOS 27's launch only ChatGPT worked as an Apple Intelligence extension. Apple's new Siri is itself built on Gemini models under a January 2026 deal, but that runs through Apple's servers, not the Gemini app.

Pick it if you use Google services every day. Skip it if you want the deepest iPhone integration, where ChatGPT and Apple's own AI lead.

#3 · Quick, private help across your iPhone apps without installing anything

Apple Intelligence (Siri AI)

by Apple · Free · Free with iOS 27 on supported iPhones
8.4/10

Apple Intelligence is not an app you download, but it is now the AI you will use most often on a recent iPhone. With iOS 27, Siri AI understands personal context from your messages, email, photos and calendar, can see what is on screen, and can take actions inside apps. There is a dedicated Siri app that syncs conversations across devices, plus Write with Siri, Visual Intelligence, better photo editing and call context that surfaces booking numbers during calls.

The privacy design is the best here: much runs on the device, and heavier requests go to Apple's Private Cloud Compute. Apple and Google announced in January 2026 that Apple's next-generation models are based on Gemini, but they still run on Apple's own systems.

The limits are real. Siri AI is labelled beta, launches in English first, needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, is not available on iPhone in the EU at first, and server features have daily caps. For long research, coding or big documents, a full assistant app is still better.

Pick it if you have a supported iPhone; it is free and already there. Skip it if your phone is older than the iPhone 15 Pro, or you need a full chatbot.

  • Daily caps on server features, with paid tiers planned
#4 · Writing, editing, reading long documents and careful reasoning

Claude

by Anthropic · Freemium · $20/month (Pro)
8.3/10

Claude is the best AI app on iPhone for anything involving words. Ask it to tighten an email, explain a lease, summarise a 60-page PDF or help you think through a decision, and its answers read more like a careful human editor than a chatbot. The latest model, Claude Opus 5.5, arrived on September 22, 2026, and paid plans now include Claude's agent features directly in chat.

The iPhone app supports voice conversations, photo and file uploads, and Shortcuts. Anthropic requires users to be 18 or older and lets you opt out of your chats being used for training, which makes it a sensible pick for sensitive work.

The drawbacks are limits and price. The free plan runs out faster than ChatGPT's or Gemini's, and heavy users will need Pro at $20 a month. Claude also has no image generation, and it is not yet live as an Apple Intelligence extension, although code in iOS 27 shows Apple preparing for it.

Pick it if writing and reading documents is your main use. Skip it if you want image generation or the most generous free plan.

#5 · Quick answers with sources you can check

Perplexity

by Perplexity AI · Freemium · $20/month (Pro)
8.1/10

Perplexity is the best AI app on iPhone when you need an answer you can trust. Instead of replying from memory, it searches the web and shows numbered sources under every answer, so you can tap through and check. That makes it better than a general chatbot for news, prices, product comparisons, travel details and anything that changes often.

The iPhone app is fast and clean, has a good voice mode, and works well from the share sheet or a home screen widget. Its App Store rating of 4.8 from about 508,000 reviews is among the highest for AI apps.

The limits: Perplexity is weaker than ChatGPT or Claude at long writing and creative tasks, the free plan limits the advanced search modes, and it has faced lawsuits from publishers over how it uses their content. Always open a source before relying on a key fact.

Pick it if you mainly use AI to look things up. Skip it if you need a writing partner or a general assistant; ChatGPT or Claude will do more. See our best AI search engines ranking for more options.

#6 · Students and researchers studying their own files

Gemini Notebook

by Google · Freemium · Free
8.0/10

Gemini Notebook, which Google called NotebookLM until July 2026, is the best study app on iPhone. You add your own sources (PDFs, lecture slides, web pages, YouTube videos, notes) and it answers questions using only those sources, with citations back to the exact passage. That sharply reduces made-up answers.

Its signature feature is Audio Overviews: it turns your material into a podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts that you can listen to on a walk or commute. It also makes study guides, flashcards, quizzes and mind maps. The iPhone app is rated 4.9 from about 61,000 reviews, the highest of any app on this list.

The limits: it is a study and research tool, not a general assistant, so it will not plan your day or answer general questions well. The free plan caps you at three audio overviews a day.

Pick it if you study, research or need to master a stack of documents. Skip it if you want a general chatbot; use Gemini or ChatGPT for that. Our best AI study tools ranking covers more options.

#7 · Typing by voice in any app, in 100+ languages

Wispr Flow

by Wispr · Freemium · $12/month (Pro, billed yearly)
7.8/10

Wispr Flow is the single-purpose AI app most worth installing on an iPhone. It adds a voice keyboard that works in any app. You talk naturally, pauses, "ums" and corrections included, and it types clean, punctuated text. Say "actually, make that Thursday" and it fixes the sentence instead of transcribing your correction.

For messages, emails and notes it is much faster than thumb typing, and far better than the iPhone's built-in dictation at getting names and punctuation right. It supports more than 100 languages and syncs your personal dictionary across iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. The App Store rating is 4.8 from about 16,000 reviews.

The drawbacks: the free plan is small on mobile (1,000 words a week), Pro costs $12 to $15 a month, and your voice is processed in the cloud. Using a third-party keyboard also means switching keyboards when you want to dictate.

Pick it if you write a lot on your phone and hate typing. Skip it if you only dictate the odd message; iOS's free dictation is fine for that.

#8 · Blind and low-vision users who want the camera described aloud

Be My Eyes

by Be My Eyes · Free · Free
7.8/10

Be My Eyes shows what AI on a phone can do at its best. Its Be My AI feature describes whatever the iPhone camera sees: a letter, a medicine label, a crowded shelf, a photo from a friend. You can ask follow-up questions, like "what is the expiry date?" or "which box is the gluten-free one?", and it answers in 36 languages.

When the AI is not enough, you can switch to a video call with a sighted volunteer, which is the service the app was founded on. It works with VoiceOver and is free for users.

For most sighted people it is not an everyday app, which is why it ranks here and not higher. But for its audience it may be the most useful AI app on the store, and it is a good one to know about for family members with sight loss. As with any AI description, double-check critical details like medicine doses.

Pick it if you or someone you help is blind or has low vision. Skip it if you want a general assistant; ChatGPT and Gemini also describe photos, with less focus on accessibility.

#9 · Microsoft 365 subscribers who work in Word, Excel and Outlook

Microsoft Copilot

by Microsoft · Freemium · $9.99/month (Microsoft 365 Personal)
7.7/10

Microsoft Copilot on iPhone is now a work app first. Microsoft is merging its consumer and work Copilot apps, and the iPhone listing (which used to be the Microsoft 365 app) now connects to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. You can draft a document, summarise an email thread or analyse a spreadsheet, then open the result in the Office app. Business users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence also get answers based on their company's data.

For people who already pay for Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, that bundle is good value: Office apps, 1 TB of storage and Copilot for $9.99 or $12.99 a month.

The drawbacks: as a general chatbot it trails ChatGPT and Gemini, and Microsoft retired several consumer features, including Deep Research and Podcasts, in August 2026. Much of the 1.3 million-rating total comes from the old Microsoft 365 app, so treat it with care.

Pick it if you already use Microsoft 365 on your phone. Skip it if you want the best standalone assistant.

#10 · Free chat and image creation, plus Meta's AI glasses

Meta AI

by Meta · Freemium · Free (Meta One Core $7.99/month)
7.5/10

Meta AI is a capable free assistant that shines in two places: creating images and short videos, and running Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley AI glasses, which you set up through this app. It now runs on Meta's Muse Spark models and handles everyday questions, voice chat in 13 languages and photo editing well.

The core chat is free, and Meta launched Meta One Core ($7.99) and Premium ($19.99) subscriptions on September 15, 2026 for more image and video creation plus perks across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Privacy is the reason it ranks lower. Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses your Meta AI chats to personalise content and ads across Facebook and Instagram, with no opt-out outside the EU, the UK and South Korea. Meta says it excludes sensitive topics such as health and religion from ad targeting.

Pick it if you own Meta glasses or want free image generation on your phone. Skip it if privacy is a priority; Claude or Apple Intelligence are safer choices.

#11 · Adults who want real-time X posts and fewer content limits

Grok

by SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) · Freemium · $10/month (SuperGrok Lite)
7.1/10

Grok has one of the highest App Store ratings of any AI app, 4.9 from about 1.4 million reviews, and it is a genuinely capable assistant. Its unique strength is live access to posts on X, which makes it quick at breaking news, sports and trending topics. It also offers voice mode, image and video generation, and a free tier.

We rank it last because of trust. Grok has repeatedly produced offensive or false answers that SpaceXAI later had to fix, its companion characters include sexualised designs, and its parent company is one of seven firms in the FTC's 2025 inquiry into companion chatbots and children. The App Store rates it 16+.

If you use it, treat its answers about news and politics with care, and check sources.

Pick it if you are an adult who follows news on X and wants a fast, less filtered assistant. Skip it if teenagers share your phone or you want an assistant with a strong safety record.

What Apple Intelligence can and cannot do in iOS 27

Apple shipped iOS 27 on September 14, 2026. The AI features that matter most:

  • Siri AI (beta): understands your personal context, sees what is on screen and takes actions in apps. It has its own Siri app with synced history.
  • Write with Siri: drafts and rewrites text across apps.
  • Visual Intelligence: ask about anything on screen or in front of the camera.
  • Photos tools: Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing, plus Image Playground for new images.
  • Call Context: surfaces confirmation codes and booking numbers during calls with businesses.

What it cannot do yet: work on iPhones older than the iPhone 15 Pro, run on iPhone in the EU at launch, or give unlimited use of server-side features. ChatGPT is the only third-party AI extension live at launch; code in iOS 27 shows hooks for Claude and others, but Apple has not switched them on.

Which AI app should you install?

  • Just one app: ChatGPT.

Privacy tips for AI apps on iPhone

  1. Read the App Store privacy label before installing. It shows what data is collected and whether it is linked to you or used for tracking.
  2. Turn off model training in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini settings if you share personal or work details.
  3. Limit permissions. Only give microphone, camera, contacts and photo library access when a feature needs it; iOS lets you share selected photos only.
  4. Watch App Store subscriptions. Weekly plans (Wispr Flow lists one at $4.49) add up fast; manage them in Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions.
  5. Use Screen Time to set age limits if children use the phone. Several AI apps are rated 16+ or 18+.
Expert tips
  1. On iPhone 15 Pro or later, set the Action button to open ChatGPT's or Gemini's voice mode (Settings, then Action Button, then Shortcut) for one-press access.
  2. In iOS 27, check Settings, then Apple Intelligence & Siri, then ChatGPT extension to control whether Siri asks before sending requests to ChatGPT.
  3. Subscribe on the vendor's website instead of in the App Store when you can: Claude and Wispr Flow both list lower web or yearly prices.
  4. Use Gemini Notebook's Audio Overviews for revision: add your lecture slides, generate an overview, and listen on your commute.
  5. If you install a third-party AI keyboard like Wispr Flow, turn off 'Allow Full Access' for any keyboard you do not trust with what you type.

Action button
The programmable side button on iPhone 15 Pro and newer, which you can set to open an app or run a shortcut.
Audio Overview
A Gemini Notebook feature that turns your documents into a podcast-style conversation between two AI voices.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI app for iPhone?

ChatGPT is the best AI app for iPhone for most people. It is rated 4.8 from about 11 million App Store ratings, has the best voice mode and camera features, and is built into Apple Intelligence so Siri can hand requests to it.

Is Apple Intelligence free?

Yes, Apple Intelligence is free on supported devices with iOS 27. Apple says server-side features have daily caps and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. It needs an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 or later.

Can I replace Siri with ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude?

Not fully. ChatGPT works as an Apple Intelligence extension, so Siri and Writing Tools can pass requests to it. Code in iOS 27 shows Apple preparing extensions for Claude and other providers, but at launch ChatGPT was the only one live. You can map any AI app to the Action button on iPhone 15 Pro and later.

Does the new Siri use Google Gemini?

Partly. In January 2026 Apple and Google announced that Apple's next-generation foundation models would be based on Gemini. Those models run on Apple devices and Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, not in the Gemini app, and Apple says its privacy standards still apply.

What is the best free AI app for iPhone?

ChatGPT and Gemini have the strongest free tiers. Gemini Notebook is free for studying your own files, Be My Eyes is completely free, and Apple Intelligence costs nothing on supported iPhones. See our best free AI tools ranking for more.

Are AI apps safe for teenagers on iPhone?

Check the App Store age rating first: Grok is 16+, and Claude requires users to be 18+. ChatGPT offers parental controls that let parents link to a teen's account. Use Screen Time's content and age limits to block apps above your child's age.
